I expected the running joke with the missing dog to have more of an influence with jokes later on, I felt as if it was building upto something It builds up to Max-as-Arthur-the-gardener's entrance with an unoccupied dog lead & his subsequent attempts to get round the lack of dog in that scene. Were you expectiong something more? On the original tour they had a dog (a different one at each venue I believe) come on for the curtain call but that got cut for the West End. First Broadway preview tonight. I hope it goes well/badly (depending on point of view!) for them! Moderators, do we need to have a Broadway thread or can any comments continue on here, given it's the same cast as London? I remember that whole scene but I still felt as if at some point a dog would appear or something more would happen afterwards as I had heard off someone else there's a dog in it so it must have been the dog at the curtain call that they saw.

Ahhhh ok that's helped me understand it a lot now! I hadn't thought that the characters themselves were playing the characters, that went right over my head. It's very unusual that I saw his understudy tonight but it's the understudy who is in all the pictures in the programme, hopefully someone can help I think I'm correct in saying that Jason Callender was injured right at the very beginning of the tour and missed a few shows, so I would assume he's not in the photos because he wasn't able to be there when they taken. Thanks Sophie that make sense. He was great so no complaints from me! I loved this show a lot, it wasn't as completely on the floor rolling about laughing stuff as some people make it out to be but my sides were still splitting for the majority. Some of the mishaps were hilarious and some of them I didn't expect, especially the one with the balcony/'2nd floor'. 4.5/5 for sure. Lol thanks. It's probably confused me even more now, whys he called Jonathan in the programme ? James Watterson played Charles tonight and he is also the person who is in all the cast pictures in the programme ?? Because all the characters (as in the members of the drama sociery) play parts within the play they are staging. For example the character of Chris Bean plays Inspector Carter, Jonathan Harris plays Charles Haversham and so on. I can't help with who's who in the current cast, unfortunately. I'm sure others on here could Ahhhh ok that's helped me understand it a lot now! I hadn't thought that the characters themselves were playing the characters, that went right over my head. What role is Jonathan in this ? I saw the tour tonight and he is played by a black man called Jason Callender but he certainly wasn't in the show I just saw. I can't work out from which of the understudies may have played this tonight, is it a character that can be cut or am I being extremely naive not remember a main characters name ? Easiest described as "corpse who isn't a corpse, and manages not to corpse despite causing the audience to corpse", I think. In English - Charles Haversham, who begins the play as the dead body on sofa. Lol thanks. It's probably confused me even more now, whys he called Jonathan in the programme ? Even though I'm not too happy that 'The Girls' are nominated as collective, if they're trying to make this show more of an ensemble performance rather than a leading lady performance, they should advertise it more in that way. I would rather it was advertised more as the great 'female' ensemble piece that it is than sticking Gary Barlow's name on every sort of advertisement. Even if some Gary Barlow fans would go see a show about watching paint dry if his name was on the poster lol Thank you Jesus, someone finally understands! Why are you not involved in the show? Can we get you in there?! (I'm sorry for the long quote but I've no idea how to delete them appropriately they always end up looking completely wrong) Lol thanks Daniel, I wrote that after a few glasses of wine as well! It's such an uplifting female strong show and in this day and age with what's going on in the world, that would be a very good way to advertise it. But Gary Barlow fans will go see anything with his name on it so I'm not surprised. If they're going to nominate The Girls as a collective, then surely the School of Rock kids should get it too as they are the driving force of the show.

you are so disparaging to this show. go and see it for gods sake, then your constant wittering will at least come from some semblance of authority. I was joking? Something I do a lot on here and no one seems to get. And if you read back a few pages rather than just put me down, I have been saying consistently that it is a shame people aren't going, and that I hope they put the talented leading ladies in the forefront of the promotion to make the show appeal to more musical theatre fans as well as Gary Barlow fans. I have nothing against the show, and I look forward to seeing it when I do, but the only thing I have ben consistently negative about is their terrible promotional work. I have been keeping an eye on this production during rehearsals, by looking at various social medias. As we know, the kids other than Charlie are played by adults but I have now seen pictures of all the 'kid' characters and 2 of them are taller than the actors/actresses playing their parents I hope they've thought of an excuse because that will look completely wrong.

Thank you! I'll print him a gift certificate and forward him the email! Phew. I'm now less frantic with worry ;-) Luckily my Hamilton tickets are for a Tuesday... no one gets married on a Tuesday. I was never forgiven for getting married at 3pm on Cup final Day in 1987...by the lifelong Coventry supporter who had to come to my wedding instead of seeing his team win the FA Cup! Enjoy the wedding, Harry Potter and Hamilton! My brother was getting married the same day that my dads team was playing in the Scottish Cup Final last year, Hibernian...They ended up winning and was the first time they had won it since 1902!!! He wasn't best pleased but held in his frustrations on the day

What are peoples opinions of this possibly getting the Best Musical award at the Olivier Awards ? Most people certainly didn't expect it to win the WOS Award so you never know ( even though that's voted publically).

When do the nominations for the best west end show get announced ? I think that's the name of it, the one where Wicked and Les Mis alternate the win every year if its already been announced then I'm slow and missed it somehow

The touring version of Matilda which is currently in the USA and Australia uses 2D versions of the 3D versions of the sets we see in London and when it was Broadway, so can very easily fit into a smaller theatre. The desks which rise up from underneath in London/NY actually come in from the side on the tour so once again they won't take up much space. I can see this being a very profitable tour Australia is more of a hybrid of the original production and the tour. Where the US tour uses cloth drops and flats for the side portals and back wall, Australia has more depth like the West End production. The main difference is that the Australian version does not have any traps and tracks the set pieces on. Only the side aisles are used for entrances rather than a central one, but all other elements are there (lasers etc). I think the Australian tour which is doing longer engagements is more likely to tour if it is going to the larger venues. The only thing that might change is the proscenium being more like the US tour. Unfortunately the US tour really does fair badly in comparison to all other productions... Thanks Butt! I hadn't realised the Australia used the side aisles and used the 3d sets so that's good to hear that they get a better quality set. The U.S. Tour one is very minimal looking with the 2D sets and Miss Honey's house being one big example. That tour finishes in a few months so I worry they will ship that set over here for the UK one.

I remember the Lion King tour had to reconfigure the stalls in some venues i.e. Bristol, do you think they would do the same for Matilda and create a central aisle (like I think they did on Broadway)? Personally I would doubt it - Lion King needed to reconfigure venues as those aisles need to be in the right place for the opening, Matilda is probably workable with existing aisles in most venues. Generally producers won't want any unnecessary expense, so if they can get by without re-configuration, they will! The touring version of this show doesn't use the stalls at all. All the action that usually happens in the stalls happens on the stage instead

Went to see this yesterday matinee after our cancellation when 4 cast members were sick! Amber was indisposed and Marisha was on as Effie - really stunning!! I was waiting for the squeals and whoops in "I'm not going" but everyone sat, listened and then went mad - result! Lucky you, when I went they were squealing halfway through!!! Hopefully I see Marisha when I next go, she hasn't had 1 bad review

Isn't six months the maximum kids can perform in shows by law? 5 months is only a month less than the norm. The longest contract they can sign is 6 months but some kids have been known to stay in shows for 18months so 3 contracts

According to their official facebook, the Original Cast of Kids have now graduated, and a new set of Kids are in now. Cool! The kids only did about 5 months in this, that's shorter than most of them do in other shows. I think maybe because they do more shows than the other. In Matilda they get a week off every 3 weeks.

Any idea if this will come to Glasgow ? The Kings Theatre get a few of the big tours like Wicked but missed out on Lion King and Billy Elliot. Not sure on that one I'm afraid. Glasgow is a big market though and Matilda would do well there so I can see it happening tbh! Thanks Daniel, I'm only 15 minutes from Glasgow but can get to Edinburgh fairly easily so it isn't too much of a problem. I'm more interested in where this may open ? I would love to be there for opening night.

Interesting to hear about the changes, thanks for the insight Phantom of London. The tour has had venues booked for a couple of years now so that probably stacks up @trekkiemonster and cheesy116 The London production is still selling very well indeed, and won't be closing for the tour. The touring production will be doing long sit downs in major venues, not dissimilar to the original Lion King and Wicked tours. Thanks Daniel, that's great to hear then, I have a habit of going to tours near me on several occasions in one stop so say goodbye to my bank balance! I love this show. The USA Tour finishes in a few months so that's perfect timing to get the set over here for the UK Tour as the job applications all state the job is from October 2017-August 2019

My friend works front of house at one of their theatres and loves her job. She has worked in independent theatres previously and much prefers this one. She gets good hours, better pay, good flexibility with time off and is looked after well by her management.
If you're more meaning within the business side of the company such as on the phones or within the organising of the company as a whole then I can't help with that.

I think the Dominion would be way too big for this version of Sister Act, the original London version would certainly fit, but not the tour. Plus, I doubt it will be booked in since American in Paris hasn't even been given a chance yet! I can see it doing well so I take this rumour with a pinch of salt.

I certainly don't think its cliquey! I've noticed various friendships on the board but have never felt like they have made others feel uncomfortable due to that friendship.
There's obviously been some unsavoury comments made to other users on some threads, Wicked and Funny Girl spring to mind, but its usually by people on their own rather than 'cliques' ganging up on them.

Well that's the acting dilemma solved I had wondered about. The story is about 5 16 year old girls and the boys/the band will be singing and dancing along to their thoughts and story.... Something of the sort lol Yeah, I thought I misheard but apparently it's true. Very strange approach. So the actual characters won't be singing and the singers won't be acting? Yes I think that's what it is. The storyline and the acting will be done by 5 girls playing 16 year olds and then their thoughts and feelings will be sung and danced by the boys who have just been cast through this show, in the form of Take That songs. So expect high pitched screaming by all the middle-aged Take That fans during the guys singing and then most people wont pay attention to the storyline lol I shouldn't judge, I think ill get a cheap ticket to see if it works, although it doesn't come near me until July 2018! Agreeing with others, I imagine there will be at least 2-4 of the guys picked from the show to be understudies. I remember in I'd Do Anything (when they cast Nancy in Oliver), about 3 of the girls still got roles in the show and all the other young boys who were going for the role Oliver got offered parts in the child ensemble

Really don't get the backlash Kimberley Walsh faces in musicals? She sounds really good and suited for the part in these vids? I think she sounds great and I loved her in Elf too
