Going to this on 23 June after seeing the RSC version on 5 May. Have an open mind as this board is full of plays that have had good or even very good reviews after being rubbished here by someone who went to the first preview.

Oh....well, hopefully it'll be tighter be the time I get to see it - which isn't for ages. The Duff/Kinnear scene they did on that Shakespeare celebration a year or so ago looked v. promising. That, of course, wasn't directed by Norris I thought that Kinnear was good in that excerpt - but Duff didn't really match him. But then I haven't seen her do anything that really blew me away. Saint Joan? She was astonishing on that.

Shakespeare surely shouldnt count in this as they are going to be done regardless? I would say Godot, Mother Courage, Streetcar.

Im originally from South East London, place called Welling, not far from Phantom. Since 2002 in the Midlands south of Birmingham. So RSC is marvellously handy. Use the Chiltern line to come to London, luckily my folks still live in Bromley so stay with them. New St Station is my gateway to Bath, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield Chichester and others. Book in advance and its good value. So were you there when Kate Bush lived there?! Oh yes! She is a couple of years older than me but she went to the girls grammar that merged with the boys grammar i was at. Hilarious to browse her book to find reference to the fantastically named park "fanny on the hill"😂

Oh wasnt aware it toured? Decent cast with Essie Davis,Jonathan Hyde and Adrian Scarbrough alongside SRB. It went to the WE and Broadway but i never caught it 😕 Hm, maybe it wasn't that production then. But it was definitely Jumpers and definitely Simon Russell Beale. To be honest, I thought it was longer ago than 15 years, I was thinking more like 17-20, because in my memory it was just after I moved to Sheffield (1998) but before I bought my house (2000) - I'm old and forgetful though, so I may well be wrong. I can't check my programme because I didn't keep it, which is a sign of how much I hated it. Well the NT production was def 2003.

There are a couple of period pieces that I would love to see Middleton's A Game at Chess - which just seems brilliantly mad on the page - I would love to see how it works on stage. I haven't heard of any modern performances Vanbrugh's The Relapse - no major revival since 2001 that I can track down. A great, great script with huge potential with the right cast. On my list of more contemporary plays to tackle at some point is Mother Clap's Molly House. Ravenhill's script has always intrigued me and it could be ripe for a revival. I do also have Dorothy L Sayer's original stage version of Busman's Honeymoon on my list. I reckon it is time to bring Lord Peter Wimsey back to prominence! Game at Chess is being given a slot in the read not dead slot at the Globe in december. I saw Molly House at the NT and it was awful.

Back to Stoppard, its 15 years since the NT last revived Jumpers with SRB. Somehow i missed it, time for it again? Oh dear god! Was that an NT production? I saw that in Sheffield with my parents and we walked out because we loathed it. We were not alone by a long chalk - the car park attendant laughed when we came out and said he knew when the intervals were with this show because there were large numbers leaving every night. I don't remember anything about it now, but my dad still shudders every time SRB comes on tv and talks about that awful play we saw in Sheffield that time. Oh wasnt aware it toured? Decent cast with Essie Davis,Jonathan Hyde and Adrian Scarbrough alongside SRB. It went to the WE and Broadway but i never caught it 😕

Wanted to see this when announced, it is a rare outing. However the combination of Barrie Rutter, the ridiculous updating and transport shenanigans put me off. From the reviews im glad. Doesnt sound like you bought a programme Mr X?

One of mine is the Tom Stoppard play "Night and Day" from the late 70s, it had a long run in the WE and went to Broadway. It has a great part for an actress played at the time by Diana Rigg and Maggie Smith but has just disappeared! I'm really amazed "The invention of Love" has never been revived, it's high time Snap!

I am wondering if this will lure Alex Jennings back to the theatre but his TV/Film career seems to have finally taken off. Hope so, love him. Had hoped he might return to the RSC.

Saw the announcement and then fell asleep! Saves me money i suppose. Hampstead has always mixed in revivals but i will have wait. Hopefully the long awaited Tricycle reopening season will offer more.

The "huge" car park can get very full for matinees. If we go by car, we usually park in a side road near the theatre. Matter for you but it is a huge car park that is v handy and you will get a place.

Well I know that, but does it really have to be a crapshoot when you book, I don't really want to splash out for a hotel, if I don't have to and I need to get someone in to feed the cats, so only other option is to drive, which I am not keen to do and is another big expense and you have the stress of getting there on time and whether you will find a parking spot. The National Theatre archive can be a good resource, as it gives running times of past productions. catalogue.nationaltheatre.org.uk/CalmView/Advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.PerformanceWhich has Copenhagen down as running 2hr 20min and Present Laughter down as 2hr 55min and the Country Wife 3hr. Also the Stage gives running times in their review. Well im from south london and if i still lived there AND had a car, it would be a no brainer to drive. Its a decent drive and you park in the huge car park adjacent to the theatre. Plus of course no fretting about running times.

I think the Mail is a terrible newspaper so I don't read it at all. This seems to put me in a small minority of the people posting here. Shouldn't the first step be you all stop reading Baz ? Oh they dont read it prof. They just follow Baz on twitter and get excited each thursday night! It is an awful newspaper and ive often wondered why BB has stayed so long, i mean i recall reading his column in the 80s.

I've never seen the film so was intrigued by this but as the running time is currently showing as 3 hours 45, I'd have to wait for a matinee (1 pm when they start) instead of an evening performance (7 pm). 7 pm would otherwise be a brilliant evening performance time in general (see discussion on CFT thread for those who travel some distance), but not if the production doesn't end until nearly 11 pm and I wonder how many of those who have booked realise this, and how many who haven't have been deterred because they do know? The problem is that you know the running time is way over three hours when they schedule the evening performance at 7, i see Tamburlaine at the RSC later this year is in that bracket.

I’ve saw the 2011 Broadway production but I’d like to see How fo Suceed in Business Without Really Trying done at The Open Air or Chichester Brigadoon, Camelot and By Jeeves are ones I’d like to see. How to succeed was done at Chichester in 2005, i saw a good if small scale revival of it at Wiltons Hall last year.

Has The Music Man ever been revived professionally in the UK? It seems to be done all the time in the US, but have never heard of it being done here. Chichester did it in 2008 with Brian Conley as Harold Hill and Scarlett Strallen as Marian. Cast also had Katy Secombe, Jenny Galloway, Zizi Strallen and Sophie Louise Dann. It was really glorious - I presume primed for a transfer but never happened for some reason! Though I don't speak with any knowledge about that. It was def supposed to tour but in the end of course didnt, not sure why.
