I wish I hadn't bothered to see this. It is awful in every aspect. The direction is just baffling, if you don't already know the play, except for the long long scenes which go on forever and so are a bit boring. Most of the actors have chosen to do their entire part in a funny voice, which does nothing to aid our comprehension. Innogen seems to be based on Violet Elizabeth Bott and is exceedingly irritating. Cymbeline is quiet and indistinct so I missed most of her words. Posthumus virtually sings it all in a horrid squeaky register. Cloten is about the only character to speak normally, which is a huge relief, but the actor still can't make much of the part, unfortunately. The only actor whose performance I genuinely appreciated was James Cooney as one of the secret princes. In the programme, Greg Doran gushes that Cymbeline and King Lear together make an RSC Ancient Britain season, which is the biggeest load of bollocks I've ever read anywhere. This production is a complete misfire and a waste of everyone's time and effort - company and audience. It's just dreadful. Hmmm. Thanks for that. I will still see it but not with any great expectations. Certain scenes can be quite compelling when done well. Surprised you bought a programme though - won the pools ? That seems to sum up your theatregoing Jan!

Really? Interesting choice. Have seen a few productions, the RSC production in 2006 with Anton Lesser and Kate Fleetwood is prob the best ive seen tho the Old Vic with SRB was quite good.

I was a little disappointed in this Lear. I want my Lear to go properly, deeply, mad; I want, as an audience member, to reach that point where I glance at the rest of the audience and think 'Someone DO something! Call an ambulance! He's ILL!' I've certainly felt this way watching Simon Russell Beale's Lear (although to be fair, Beale could put a Co-op bag on his head and I'd still revere him as Greatest-Actor-Ever). For me, Sher never tipped over that edge where I am moved to pity and sorrow for Lear's loss and mess of life. Perhaps it was Sher's flawless control over the role, or the pacing, or even the costumes (too much black all round? A little bit heavy handed with the black and white distinction?). But it is a good Lear in being attentive and careful, and I'd recommend it for getting to know the play. I liked the elevation of Lear at key plot points: it set our kids on a good discussion about power, authority, high chairs, and why the adults always want to sit down. I thought Simon Russell-Beale's performance was more like Lear the Opera - singing the lines in the way John Gielgud was always accused of doing. I've seen these ones, none entirely convincing: Michael Gambon Antony Hopkins Eric Porter Brian Cox John Wood Robert Stephens Ian Holm Nigel Hawthorne Timothy West Ian McKellen Pete Postelthwaite Derek Jacobi Jonathan Pryce SRB Michael Pennington Have seen all these (save Gambon, am too young!) and more besides. John Wood at Stratford in 1990 still my benchmark. Its Shakey's greatest play. Still got Glenda and the intriguing sounding double bill at Derby to come this year😁. May go to Sher cinema showing on 12 Oct as well, see you there Jan?🙉🙉

Sigh! I dont get that at all. I have plays/writers i dont like, so i dont go, its just a waste of time and money😕 Depends how much time and money you have I suppose. I like to give plays a fair chance. I have now given up on King Lear after 15 which seems about right. Very good productions of Jonson are very rare. Richard Griffiths as Volpone was brilliantly funny, Danny Boyle's production of The Silent Woman was excellent. That's about it. 15!!! 😮😮😮

I saw the revival in the late 80s with Diana Rigg, Julia McKenzie and Dan Massey. It was fabulous. Anyone else remember it? Wonder if they will try and tempt Nathan Lane.😁

Oh well am sorry to hear some negative comments! I stand by my more positive view. Bit puzzled by the comments on the running time, it is King Lear, its a long play, ive seem much longer productions believe me. Will be interesting to see comments when it goes to London.

Saw todays matinee. Cards on the table first, i have liked Sher since i first saw him as Shylock almost 30 years ago plus KL is my fav Shakey play. I loved it! The three and half hours flew by. Sher is superb, commanding, fragile, stern, surprisingly funny. Supporting cast are uniformly excellent Essiedu is a star of the future, he is very good as a sardonic Edmund as is well matched by Johnston as Edgar. The sisters are well matched. Easily the best of the four Lears i have seem so far this year. Thoroughly recommended😃

Fraid so Lynette, advertised for sometime that it is a co-production between BOV, Liverpool and the Citz. I saw the RSC production in 2000 with David Tennant and Wendy Craig, hilarious!

I saw Massacre in Paris at the Rose, whilst it was a bit rough round the edges, i thought it an imaginative staging. It would be great to see an "official" RSC production, and as rhey do seem to be working through the Marlowe canon, it may come to pass😄

One of the reasons it premiered on briadway is that Sting is regarded as some sort of musical genius in the states whereas here he is that bloke from the Police. Cant see it being done over her im afraid.

Quite obviously i meant any theatre when i was referring to other Miller plays being put on, not the Rose Kingston! I had high hopes for the Bolton Octagon when that keen Miller enthusiast David Thacker took over a few years ago. But no! While he did put on Miller he shied away from the "lesser" works😕

The casting has put me off, i mean seriously, David Horowitch must be well over seventy! I agree with earlier posters, i like Miller but why the same plays over and over? Why cant someone do Incident at Vichy or the Archbishops Ceiling? His final play Finishing the Picture hasnt even had a UK production😕
