Yes although several romance plotlines do feature quite heavily, I'd say the main story is really about three women striving for happiness, freedom and acceptance. That's certainly why this musical resonates so strongly with me personally. I get this, although Ogie getting an entire comical song about basically stalking Dawn, pursuing her even though she says no, and then eventually being rewarded for it was a huge turnoff for me. Oh my goodness yes I can relate, when I first heard the song I was convinced he was going to be presented as some sort of villain within the show.

I'm not sure that showing strong supportive female friendships, promoting female sexuality, and presenting female characters as flawed individuals who know their own minds *is* politicizing the musical. I'm just describing the content of the show, which happens to have feminist undertones because unfortunately quite often women are pitted against each other in media (e.g. the good girl vs. the bitchy mean girls, the wife and the evil conniving Other Woman etc.) or painted as two dimensional sidekicks rather than the complex stars of their own story. I'm not picking this stuff out of thin air... it's in the show.
Sorry to hear that even the slightest whiff of feminism (or should I say, choosing to read a piece through a feminist lense) makes someone a friendless keyboard warrior though.

The video clips from the launch are killing me 💕 and although I somehow doubt Gavin Creel is going to be in the production (oh my god do I love him though, and he sounds gorgeous!), it's a nice little treat to hear him sing the songs with Sara.
As someone who identifies as a feminist I'm also not really seeing how the musical could be classed as un-feminist overall, although I'm happy to be 'proven' wrong. Not that it'd make me love this show any less. (I think I'm being vague enough to avoid spoiler territory here !!) It presents strong supportive female friendships, promotes female sexuality, presents the female characters as strong women who know their own mind, despite being stuck in situations that limit them etc. They are all very flawed characters who make mistakes and do morally dubious things, but I think that makes them all the more realistic.
I'm on holiday right now and don't really have the energy to write a whole essay on the subject but I'm sure there are articals out there.

To clarify on my answer to the press night/ opening night question, I was speaking about this particular instance.❤
Anyway I'm super excited about this show - all the promo featuring Jessie is making me WISH she'd come over. Obviously that's not gonna happen but still.. a girl can dream!

I know it's impossible to tell really but do we think this is going to sell out straight away?

It's a reference to The Picture of Dorian Gray, because Lea doesn't seem to have aged a day in about 20 years ❤

We didn't have any trouble bc we came in drips and drabs, so I'm not sure really. Tbh I'd not read this thread before we went so I didn't know anything about the door policy at the time.

Did anyone go to this btw? I went with a few theatre blogger friends and had a great time. The performers were fabulous and the vibe was so casual and fun that we ended up sticking around until the end (an ungodly 3pm!). Won't be going every week, obvs, but I'll definitely be back soon!

It was gorgeous, wasn't it? So glad they broadcast this one. I thought the orchestra sounded utterly beautiful, and the whole cast was top notch. I need to see more of Nathaniel Hackman, he's just got such a watchable presence (not the most eloquent way to put it, but... y'know what I mean, so emotive and a lovely voice). And Louise Dearman's I Can Cook Too was another standout moment. I didn't want it to end! I'll definitely be revisiting some moments on iplayer.
This, followed by the West Side Stories documentary, made for a very entertaining evening on BBC4.

Yes! 100% Rukaya ! Rebecca is such an incredible actress, she'd be wonderful. (And yeah, It'd crossed my mind that those suggesting CHF as Jenna perhaps weren't super familiar with the story (nothing wrong with that, of course), as she seems VERY young for the role. As Dawn though, she'd fit the age profile fine) musicalmarge I'm not sure things like body type (?) and hair length and colour are pertinent to the story, are they? And in any case, a few of the Jenna actresses have been wigged as far as I'm aware.

I totally agree Rebecca Trehearn would be fabulous. A couple of people have mentioned Julie Atherton now too, who I think would be incredible.
Some of the dream casting I've already seen around the web (not necessarily on here) has been a bit unusual, as the point of Jenna and her journey throughout the musical, as has already been mentioned by lewisv1733, is that she's watching the years slip by, going no where in her job, and stuck in an abusive relationship with her childhood sweetheart (as the characters sing in the opening number "Some things never change", it hints towards an endless repetitive cycle, I.e. they've all been stuck in their ways for years and years). Therefore I definitely think the actress playing Jenna (and Becky too, for that matter, given that her story sort of mirrors Jenna's) should be played by a leading lady in her 30s, at least. Judging by the casting on B'way so far that seems to be what writer Jessie Nelson and the rest of the creative team envisioned too.
Broadway and the tour have had some amazing actresses in the role and regardless of who we get over here, I trust they'll be amazing.

Well I suppose we can't all like the same things, as it happens to be one of my favourites.
If we're talking dream casting I think Rachel John would make a good Jenna, and Cassie Compton (recently Julia in The Wedding Singer) might be a nice Dawn.

I think they'll have a British Jenna but I would love to see Jessie Mueller make her West End debut. Ditto, and ditto. She's been one of my fave performers for years now and I'm desperate to see her live. But I do doubt they'd bring her over. Could see Sara opening it though, potentially. How exciting!

Finally saw this tonight.
Took a while for me to fully get into it, but I loved it. I laughed, I cried... I pretty much grinned through half of it actually!
I think for me the flashbacks were my favourite bits, and I kind of wished the whole film was in flashbacks. The younger counterparts were great (oh and me and young Bill are eloping.... thought you all ought to know).
All in all, fabulous. I can't wait to see it again! 💕

That's so interesting as my list goes...
David Hunter Jonathan Carlton Paul Ayres Oliver Tompsett
Although all were great of course and there's not really much in it. I just thought David Hunter was best for comedy (And his voice really suited all the songs) and Jonathan Carlton was so emotional and real. Deffo need to see Jordan Fox soon too! (When did I become such a fangirl over this show 😂)

I haven't enjoyed AHS since the end of Asylum but I stuck it out until the end of Roanoke anyway 😂 May very well give this a go as although I though Coven was a bit meandering, the characters were interesting. Thank god (my fave reoccurring cast member) Evan Peters is in a new role though. Kyle did him no favours whatsoever.

Well... for a vlog channel I think it kind of is. Plus she's part of the slew of early(ish) youtubers on the scene (2011 I believe) who made it big and all seem to be interconnected so she's a known face to most people who follow the big UK youtubers (I used a little bit when I was a tween, about 6 or 7 years ago).
Oh, and she's also the sister of McFly member Tom Fletcher.
Her content is attractive to young people in particular, and is all quite personal and relatable, which has the double effect of being a great way to endear herself to her young fan base, but also leads to people thinking that she is their best friend - hence the massive hubbub about fans feeling like they have a right to meet her, I guess.
She's also an author of YA fiction, and a successful young musical theatre actor, having appeared in the West End as a child and returning a few years ago.
Like it or not, she's a talented singer and it takes a lot to carve a successful online persona for yourself, so I'd say for a 25 year old she's doing quite well.
I wouldn't really describe myself as a dedicated CHF *fan* and I'm not about to wade into the stage door chatter, but I don't think it's right to be so flippant about her achievements.

Exactly! 16 year old me spent ages saving for a gorgeous sparkly dress (I didn't go all out ballgown mind you) and all my friends chipped in for a limo, took cute pics, and listened to people give speeches before we knew we'd all probably mostly never speak again.
Some 16 year olds love the idea of getting all glammed up, probably for the first time in their lives. I don't think that's really that shocking. Tbh looking back it was 2011 and probably all quite tacky, but we felt very grown up and fancy at the time! It never crossed my mind as being either British or purposely not British, because I don't think at 16 (or now for that matter) that's something that many people care about or act on. Just like Trick Or Treating at Halloween. In any event it was hardly an cultural apocalypse.
(To bring this back to Jamie in some small way, I'm seeing the show for the first time on Monday. Exciting!!)
