Saw this at The Other Palace tonight.
With the current debate about straight people playing gay, or white people playing other races, it was interesting to see young people playing young people, rather than 30 year olds pretending to be teenagers!
There are some exceptionally talented people in this cast, and I look forward to digging out the programme in years to come and discovering that I’d seen a current West End star before they were famous.
In many instances this production is a lot more interesting than the original. Especially the staging of ‘Don’t Like You’, which shows a lot more imagination than previously. I do think it’s a shame that ‘All The Love I Have’ has been chopped up and spread around the second act, rather than being a powerful stand alone number at the end though (not NYMT’s fault, of course).
Would recommend getting down to TOP to see it.

At the Lion King after Circle of Life, about 10 minutes into the show, the boy behind me turned to his mum and asked 'Is the show finished?' It should finish at that point.

They don’t have a leg to stand on! I’d go absolutely apesh*t if I was in your situation.
If you booked by credit card claim the money back from the credit card company.

I think this is the real legacy of the jukebox musicals. They attracted chavs to the theatre, who behaved like chavs during the performance, got away with it, and now believe that is how you behave at a musical.
(Snob mode off)

How does a show like this happen? How does it get as far as a “West End” stage without someone saying WTF?!?

I'm surprised to see Hairspray mentioned so much. The original production before it got downsized was perfection, the movie I find so flat with some poor casting choices My main problem with Hairspray is the current run-down looking production out on tour. The cast are young, perky and enthusiastic and I’m sure it’s a great show for new actors, but the current production has virtually no set, faulty props and dirty looking costumes. The original West End production was one big cardboard fest, with some added fake corpsing. Give me the movie any day!

Anyone else notice a similarity between a section of ‘A Puzzlement’ in TKAI and ‘The Seduction’ in The Woman in White?!

Am really enjoying the Cats / Starlight period of his life / the book. Found the earlier life a little bit harder going. He seems to have raided By Jeeves for a lot of the expressions he uses.

I’ve never been to a show where the actor stopped and called out an audience member, but I’ve been to plenty where they would have been fully justified in doing so. It certainly wouldn’t bother me if they did, and I don’t believe they should carry on regardless in some form of “show of professionalism”.

somehow now i hope England loses so they don’t completely go crazy and think football excuses everything I’ve been hoping they lose since the start. The quicker they are out the sooner everyone will shut up about the stupid game. Though now they are getting closer to the final I’m starting to change my mind a little. Probably better they lose right at the end as that will really upset all these football obsessed idiots.

I have to publish my accounts through companies house for my one man band company of no consequence. The company I work in publishes it's financial statement quarterly. Sports events and concert tours announce attendance figures. Films, books, tv have charts. I don't know why theatre is so private about it. Other than having an annual west end attendance is up 2% or whatever. And the producer of the show has to publish their accounts too. So (non-existent) problem solved.

This was a topic a while ago. Broadway has published takings for years and years and in this day and age i can see no good reason for the WE not to follow suit. The figures are obviously out there. Rather oddly for me the feeling here previously was that people didn't seem bothered. The Stage has recently published their own table, but it's not "official". The “good reason” is that there is no need for it. See a show if you want to, or don’t, up to you. But you have no need to know its finances. What I find odd is that people feel this is something that should be public knowledge. What has it got to do with anyone but the producer?

I loved the actor/muso production of Sunset Blvd at the Watermill, but didn’t enjoy the same production at all in the West End. I think shows do need to be in scale with the venue.
Having said that, I do think I’d still like this production of Titanic.

That's not what I was told by friends who went. One left at the interval. But I daresay she might have been to some people's taste - someone cast her, after all. Martine was excellent and she won the Olivier. I don't think your friends' opinion was shared by many. It's a really shame that clearly musical theatre was not for her because she could have had a great career in it And if your friend left at the interval because of *one* poor performance, I'm guessing he/she isn't a great musicals fan Expressed much better than I could have managed, and spot on! Martine was great in MFL.

A very clear and unequivocal announcement does need to be made at the start of the show. These people are convinced they are entitled to sing/dance during the show. If anyone complains they simply refuse to accept they are behaving badly. It needs to be made incredibly clear to them that this is not acceptable. My directions to these sorts of people are usually firm but fair...along the lines of “shut the f@ck up roughneck, I’ve paid good money to hear them sing not you. If you want to do karaoke p£ss off back to Pontins!” But I’m not very nice so that’ll be why. 😈 Sounds perfect!

Lots of complaints on twitter about the sound. I was there last year for this and it was rubbish then. What is the issue with this venue? Such a shame sounds like a great line up I don’t know. It was the same (famously) for the Chess concert. And yet the 25th Anniversary concerts for Phantom sounded absolutely glorious, so it can be done.

It’s interesting to think that Theatre has become this sacred space. I’m sure that I recall being taught that in Shakespeare’s day it was a far more riotous affair - especially in the pit - with people moving around, chatting to each other, holding running commentaries about what was happening on stage. Can someone please let me know if this picture is true. They didn’t pay upwards of £70 per ticket though!

What’s with the whole “no one will vote for us whoever we send” thing?!
7 years ago Blue came 11th.
And 9 years ago Jade Ewen, with Andrew Lloyd Webber on piano, came 5th.
People vote for the UK when we don’t send unknown artists with crappy songs!

Was just looking at tripadvisor for the Coliseum as want to book tickets for Kiss Me Kate and was just looking at seat reviews and found this one ( she meant to put it for Bat Out of Hell at Dominion theatre) Don’t enjoy yourself This is the first time at a musical that we were told off for singing and clapping along!! We are a group of 6 friends that regularly go to musicals. We always are encouraged to clap and sing along so we were amazed and very annoyed to be admonished for doing this at the Dominion Theatre tonight. It completely ruined our evening as the songs were the only good thing about this show. The story is weak and mostly incomprehensible. Definitely will not be recommending this to anyone!!
Love that she couldn’t even post that on the right theatre! What a moron.

Portugal was such a borrrring host. Their music is dreadful, the interval was a snooze fest, and the presenters were awful. Add to that the stage invasion, and it was the worst ESC I’ve ever seen.

At the Bat Out Of Hell interval just now:
“How are people not bouncing around and dancing?” she says to her mate. “You weren’t moving much but at least you’re singing. Maybe they don’t know the songs?”
Or perhaps they have basic theatre etiquette you complete chav!!!! Bugger off to a concert if you want to wail like a mangy cat, otherwise sit still and shut up! 🙄

Do people think there’s a problem with Jamael from a distance, because I’ve only seen the show from very front stalls seats and didn’t think he was “wooden” or poor in any way. Just can’t get my head around why so many people aren’t keen on him.

Great thread Distant Dreamer... ! Her Majesty's Theatre is quite possibly my favourite theatre exterior. I think one of the many reason Phantom works there is because it looks so in keeping with the show. Its hard to believe that once upon a time its neighbour was far more in keeping with HMT and not the stark, juxtaposing eyesore that currently exists. The Carlton Hotel, designed by CJ Phipps also, was unfortunately substantially damaged during WW2 and subsequently destroyed late 1950's. We are so lucky HMT survived in tact! More info: www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/CarltonHotel.htmWow, never knew that! It must have looked fabulous, and it’s such a shame it no longer exists.

I have tickets for the last show in October. Forgive me if what Im asking is dumb but is there a chance that, when the show isnt selling good, that date gets canceled? If so Im gonna trade them for an earlier date. Yes, it’s possible that could happen, though I really hope it doesn’t.
