Waddingham is very PC in a single respect. When it comes to using words like “going nuts” and “bunch of lunatics” she doesn’t have a problem. Too busy throwing her knickers at men to have any mental health awareness training I guess.

Absolutely loved this tonight. The part could have been written for Beverley Knight, she is perfect. Great cast all round!

How much did you “invest”? As an audience member probably over £1k. Hence access to the album as soon as it is available would be appreciated, as I am unlikely to visit NYC any time soon. EDIT - added up the cost was around £2k including gifted tickets to others. Enough to justify a whinge about a £15 album, surely? Very strange definition of “investing”.

Why tf give album access to Broadway audiences ahead of those of us who invested heavily in the London version? How much did you “invest”?

I love Joseph. One of my all time fave musicals. I don't love the Lawrence Connor panto production and am slightly sad the show seems lumbered with it currently. For anyone that can remember the iconic Stephen Pimlott production, it's a massive downgrade in every aspect. It's such a joyous show that it more or less comes together in the end, but I find it in spite of rather than because of the production. Of course I recognise we are never gonna get anything as expensive and technically expensive as the Pimlott version in 2024. But my preference would be for another new version! Absolutley! Was the Pimlott staging that much more expensive than the current one though? It toured the UK, including the revolve, so it can be done.

On The Masked Singer, Keala Settle mentioned Alexandra Burke playing Deloris in Sister Act soon. They have not yet announced who is playing Sister Mary Patrick after June 8th. Thanks for the spoiler.

Binged Australia season 2. Sustained slapping of the forehead throughout, shouting at the telly and whooping at the final twist. Loved it. Agreed! I might even put my head on the block and say Rodger is a better host than Claudia 😱 Why was the series cancelled in Aus? 😭

I'm bemused by the reaction that Mollie was hookwinked by Harry, people do realise that the point of the show. But not to the point that even when Jaz is clearly not a traitor, she still voted for him not Harry. That’s not “hoodwinked”, it’s verging on “brainwashed”.

Yes, the "Backstage Restaurant" - the first one was in Essen actually when they opened the Colosseum Theatre there. Stuttgart then got a copy inside the SI Centrum, where the two theatres were (well, still are). One of the few truly inspired ideas they had. I seem to remember areas themed on Joseph, Starlight, Cats & Phantom - was that it?

Wow - the prices of Phantom tickets these days... Thank heavens for pals who can sort out decent seats at a decent price. I guess the decision to close/revamp is vindicated through the renewed popularity of this show. The popularity, and the high ticket prices, validate the budget cuts? If that’s logic it’s not a version I’m familiar with.

Once again, a fix. It just so happens that the person voted out this week is connected to the guest judge 🙄. You’re saying the live audience vote is staged/fixed?

Possibly I'm missing something but I saw the Broadway production and i loved it! I went in blind and just thought this was original and fantastic! Yeah, I saw the Broadway production right at the start and again near the end. I still remember it as one of the most powerful musicals I’ve seen. What exactly was wrong with it?

I've noticed something recently regarding single seats, not sure if it's new or if I just haven't spotted it before. Instead of showing all seats and refusing to sell single seats, some booking sites will outright change the seating plan to hide the seats they don't want you to have. So if you select that you want two seats, then change it to one, a lot of the seats on sale will just disappear. Good to know, thanks 👍

Pet was in her 60's by this point, Although Petula has played the role more than any other having done the role more than any other actor. SUNSET BOULEVARD November 17, 1998--April 9, 2000, US Tour January 9, 1996--April 5, 1997, Adelphi Theatre, West End, London, UK September 2, 1995--October 14, 1995, Adelphi Theatre, West End, London, UK (Six-week run, subbing for Elaine Paige) Without a rest from her grueling Blood Brothers tour in the USA, Petula was asked to play Norma Desmond in Andrew Loyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard in London's West End. Petula thought she wouldn't be right for the part, but fortunately Trevor Nunn was able to convince her that she'd be "marvellous." Trevor honored Petula at a "This Is Your Life" taping (Petula's third) by stating unequivocally, "Petula is the real thing!" Petula performed in Sunset for what everyone believed would be the final time before a packed house in London's West End on April 5, 1997. The following year, Petula (missing "Norma") embarked on an 18 month U.S. tour and became the longest running Norma to date. Quanity is very different to quality. And Trevor Nunn is hardly going to go on This Is Your Life and say “you were too old and your voice was knackered” is he? 🙄

The note we're all talking about. Mods please delete if not allowed. https://www.tiktok.com/@sunsetblvdvids/video/7320610893216238880 Blimey, she didn’t do that when I saw it in November! I suppose it’s a very in your face example of “watch me fly, we both know I can do it”… we do now Nicky, we certainly do! What an awful noise. Perhaps it serves as some kind of warning to boats on the Thames. Otherwise, can’t see the point of it.

As someone who went this afternoon out of curiosity, I totally resent the freaks anology here thanks. Everyone was super respectful, the security and front of house staff chatted to everyone in the lead up to it happening. The team at the Savoy love that it's developed a following - everyone followed the (very simple) instructions we were given in advance - so I see no issue with this and don't appreciate the unnecessary name calling. Looks like chaos to me, but each to their own. It's the guy at the end with the white top totally breaching the cordon that did it for me. Just needs one idiot with a knife or a thirst for notoriety... Yep, health and safety nightmare! 😱 If only there was some solution… like not performing a musical live on a public pavement perhaps 🤷♂️

Would have been a great idea for an original piece though. A forgotten/cancelled/past it YouTuber or TikTokker in her 50’s still doing the finger snapping and “slaaaaaay” and all that business long past everyone growing out of it. Her friends are all settled down living normal lives, and they’re still on Twitch to the remaining 80 people left behind, begging for donations and avoiding debt collectors as they live beyond their means. It just didn’t need to be Sunset Boulevard, which has a definitive setting, themes and grandeur which Lloyd set aside to fit in his vision. Yes, I feel Lloyd really wanted to make a modern adaptation of Sunset Boulevard, but was stuck with the ALW version. He removed as many references to silent movie stars as he could, cut some numbers, ditched the costumes and set that the show is famous for, but the story is still too deeply embedded in there for his new version to really make sense.

In other news I remembered today the melody of this bridge section in AIWNSG is identical to “time they say is relative, infinite as space….” etc in Half A Moment from Jeeves. And the rest of it is “One Hot Afternoon” from Cricket.

And fourteen whole seconds of no emotion whatsoever. Wonderful. It clearly provokes an emotional response from many of the audience, so must be doing something right... I agree, it gets the response it sets out to get. The held note has become a bit of a cliche for Norma’s over the years. The mid-song cheering, the instant standing ovation afterwards. I believe Lloyd (via Scherzinger) is taking the piss out of this moment, just as he takes the piss out of the whole show during the title number, and by extension is taking the piss out of the audience… who lap it up by screaming and finger snapping and generally playing the fools he expects them to be.

Just for curiosity, I timed the "I've come hooooooooome at last..." section from last night... Nicole held the "home" note for fourteen seconds. FOURTEEN! I read into the elongation that Norma's desperate to prove her legitimacy and longevity. Whatever it is, it brought audible gasps and whoops on the night. And fourteen whole seconds of no emotion whatsoever. Wonderful.

British irony doesn't always come across well online. I think you’re right @talkpaul. I didn’t think steve10086 was being ironic. According to Wikipedia ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_National_Day) England doesn’t have an official national day. Do English people find it funny that Americans get so patriotic about July 4th? Yeah, sorry, was just joking. But seriously, I do find 250 years a little irrelevant. Countries with real history are a lot more interesting. And yes, all the July 4 stuff is a bit ridiculous.

250 years? I’ll be more interested when it’s properly established itself. Do you mean you’ll be more interested when it (i.e America ) has established itself as a nation? 250 years isn’t long enough? Yeah, give it a bit more time to bed itself in.

I've seen the show for the first time tonight, and all I can say is that I really enjoyed it. Very technical too, which is something you wouldn't expect from a show without a set. The only remark I have is that when you don't show the reporters and tv crew entering the mansion at the end, it's really difficult to see how the camera's make Norma think she's 'ready for her closeup'. This made the ending really confusing for my daughter who never saw the original. I agree. Removing the police and reporters from the final scene is a "choice" and doesn't serve the storytelling. As well as cutting the voiceover "as dawn breaks over the murder house..." I wonder if there is rather too much assumed knowledge of context - stripping back so much of the "scaffold" of the story. This is an example of Lloyd’s style over substance approach.

It’s not great when a directorial choice causes confusion to a plot that has never been confusing before. Almost makes you think of the phrase “style over substance”.
