My Mum was on Stars in their Eyes as Tammy Wynette in the mid 90s, back in the days before the braying mob and Victorian freakshow type talent shows we've come to know and loathe! The whole process for her was lovely, everyone at Granada TV was really kind and supportive and she had a wonderful time. There was certainly no confidentiality agreements, they just asked you to keep quiet about who won the show. But, of course, there was no social media back then. But I think in those days it was very much shows about ordinary people doing something special, whereas these days the whole system is a lot harsher, but contestants expect it to be a gateway to fame and fortune and once you've been on one talent or reality show, you can then start doing the circuit and appearing on all the others. The rise of the 'reality' star has given youngsters the idea that they can become rich and famous by not doing very much and having no discernible talent...not the best of role models.

Thinking of catching this in Woking when it heads there. Have never seen the film or watched/read the play, the main draw for me is Jodie Prenger, having not seen her in anything as of yet but been a fan for a while, ever since I voted her for I'd Do Anything haha. The play, as a one-woman show, is quite different from the film, but if you've seen neither that matters not a jot! I saw it on Monday and thought Jodie did a cracking job - go for it! Sounds good - I've got tickets to see this in Brighton in July. I love the film, so it will be interesting to see how the original play is done.

Anyone else watch this with NT Live tonight? I thought it was good, although I didn't know anything about the play, but Ruth Wilson gave the ending away when she was on Graham Norton on Radio 2 the weekend, so it's a shame that I was watching it knowing what was coming up. But hey ho, I do like these NT live screenings, it's nice for people like me who don't live in London to see these productions, and it's probably not something I would make the effort to go and see live when there's so much other stuff on my list. And it is a National Theatre, so all credit to them for attracting people outside of London.

Just watched episode 1, loved it! Camp as Christmas, as you would expect, with lavish sets and fabulous costumes. A bit of clunky dialogue used to explain their back stories ("when I won my Oscar in 1946 for Mildred Pierce" etc.) Some great guest appearances from Kathy Bates, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Stanley Tucci as Jack Warner in a shocking wig. All good fun - Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange are clearly having the time of their lives. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I've not seen it yet, but have been looking forward to it. There are always ways and means of watching this stuff. I remember seeing Bette and Joan a while ago at the Arts Theatre with Anita Dobson and Greta Scacchi, loved that, so it will be interesting to see how an 8 hour series will play out. They're already planning a 2nd series - the next one will be about Charles and Di...I wonder who they will cast?

Sorry for my tardiness in replying. I really enjoyed it too, really sweet and well done, I thought all the poetry stuff worked well and the chemistry between them seemed real. Agree that some gratuitous acting in pants wouldn't have gone amiss! I think everyone had a little crush on Felix at the end.... one bonus tho, we ordered post drinks cos they were offering a discount, then when we came out after the show, they escorted us to the private members bar upstairs, all very swish, we were hoping to spot some celebs, but sadly not. Apparently it only opened last week and they're hoping it will be the new Groucho!! Obviously, we were sat there looking like we'd won a competition! But it was a nice end to a great evening.

Just had a quick look and every performance of Caroline or Change is now sold out, but there is still availability for Lear during most performances in October.

Don't think people have realised that the seats are for sale for Amadeus next year today....lots of bargain £15 seats still to be had at the front! And National will always take back tickets for credit (£2 fee each ticket) if it seems too far in advance to book! Thanks for the tip, just booked me some great £18 seats at the front for a Saturday night in February

This is more what I have been to see, rather what I am going to see...a bit of Am Dram - Sive at The Spring Arts Centre in Havant. What a depressing play that was...Impeccably acted, but the subject matter was incredibly gloomy. I may have to rewatch the recording of Gypsy with Imelda at the weekend to cheer myself up

At first glance it did all look a bit underwhelming, but reading more about the productions has got me a little more excited. I'll certainly be seeing Richard Wilson in 'Forty Years On' (I love a bit of Alan Bennett me), Caroline, or Change sounds good, as does some of the others...Not sure about Fiddler as I saw that recently when it was on tour with Paul Michael Glaser, so it seems a bit soon to see it again. But then Chi is only up the road for me, so popping out on a weekday evening to try something new is not such a big effort

We were in the stalls, seemed full down there...Really enjoyed the play, seemed to go very quickly though, but at least we'll be home at a reasonable time....and I spotted Alan Carr in the audience too, but that's for another thread! All in all, it was well worth a Tuesday night visit to London

Saw this at Chichester on Saturday, really enjoyed it, I'd only seen the Anthony Hopkins/Ian McKellen version on the TV, so was looking forward to seeing it live and it didn't disappoint. Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith were perfect, just enough comedy to keep it from being too bleak. Harriet Thorpe as Her Ladyship was a revelation. Only seen her in the Brittas Empire and Ab Fab both as pretty one-dimensional characters, so didn't expect her to be so good! One thing that did surprise me though was the house was only about 50% full....I've never been to anything at Chichester with so many empty seats, which is why I always panic and get my seats booked well in advance.

Hi all - 1st time post for me :-) We went to the Oliviers for the first time last year and it was an amazing night. We got to walk the red carpet (which was a bit intimidating with all the public at the barriers whispering 'are they anyone?', then looking disappointed when they realised we weren't...). On arrival, we were ushered into the bar, with free-flowing champagne and everyone looking very glamorous. There was a goody bag on our seats, which sadly didn't contain a Tiffany bracelet or tickets to the Maldives, but there was some posh sweets, water and other bits and pieces...it was a nice touch and a nice souvenir. The seats were in the gods, but it was a great experience just to be there. Afterwards, we hung around for a few minutes hoping to be invited to a showbiz party, or at least for cocoa at Dame Judi's, but we gave up and popped in the pub across the road, which seemed very quiet. After a few minutes, a small crowd came in to much applause, and it was the cast of People, Places and Things, including the wonderful Denise Gough clutching her newly won best actress award. She was lovely and let us hold the award and have pics taken with it (it's surprisingly heavy!). So it was a great end to a fantastic night.
We've got tickets to this year's awards at the RAH, but it is a bit disappointing that we don't get to walk the red carpet (it says in the t&cs that the entrance for us lot is round the back), and given there will be so many more paying public there, I wonder if the champagne will be as generous. However, still looking forward to it, and it's a great excuse to dust off the sparkly bow tie!
