Put me in the 'loved it' camp. I saw the production with John Partridge a few years back and this is leaps and bounds better. I've booked to see it again in the final week of the run in September...hoping for an Indian summer!

I’ve got 2 tickets for this for tonight (12th June). D10 and D11. Unfortunately I can’t go, so if someone can make use of them, message me, I don’t want paying for them, I’ll just be happy they can be used. Tickets now gone

I saw this last week and fully agree with the post above, the cast are all excellent and it’s a fascinating story I knew nothing about. I don’t think I’ve seen a dud at Southwark Playhouse, such a great place and incredible value.

Saw this again on Saturday, first time seeing it in it's new home. Absolutely loved the glow up, the sets are amazing as is the glitzy finale, but it's great to see it hasn't lost any of the original charm. However, sat in the front row AA wasn't the best. It's a bit claustrophobic as there isn't anywhere to move your feet too and the stage is high. I'm not short, but when I was sat down, the stage was at eye level, so I had an ankle-eye view! Lots of looking up, and a stiff neck the following day.

Really want to see this what are the chances of getting rush tickets on a Saturday or day seats at the box office ? 👍 I got 2 rush tickets for the matinee last Saturday, I had to persist on the app though, I kept refreshing and eventually got 2 tickets in row d of the circle. So glad I did, really enjoyed.

These are mine: 1. Operation Mincemeat - Southwark Playhouse version 2. ABBA Voyage 3. Prima Facie 4. Tammy Faye 5. Stranger Sings at The Waterloo Vaults...not an obvious one, but I thought it was such fun!

Saw the matinee on Saturday and was blown away. I absolutely loved it. I must confess to being a Tammy Faye fan, in the 80s a lot of my family became born again Christians and talked about going to see Billy Graham, visiting Heritage USA and generally how great the 'electric church' was. The show captured the campness of it all, the 80s fashions, the 'christian rock' style of music and the endless pleas to send money! I've always been interested in Tammy, from the RuPaul documentary to the recent film. I think if you weren't aware of her or her story, then some of the material may not resonate as much. I will be looking out for tickets to pop up to see this again. As an aside, Kathy Burke was sat behind us in the audience, she enjoyed it too!

The reviews I saw were 3*, and I think I would agree. The marketing and title don’t do this show any favours, they don’t describe what you’re going to see at all. I would say it’s more like A Star is Born and End of the Rainbow mash up, but with the addition of a sister, but I thought her back story was left unexplored, it is definitely all about the singer. The cast are fantastic and the lead has a lovely voice, but IMHO, some of the songs were a bit samey and didn’t evoke the era they were set in (the show spans the 1940s to the 1970s). However, there was a lot to enjoy and I’m glad I saw it and with some tweaks this could be elevated.

This is back, and has got 5* reviews in The Times and The Guardian. Going tonight (and to the pub quiz after) and will be sat in the 'pub seating', so have borrowed some adidas gear to look the part!

Was at the press night last night and it was glorious. Agree with everyone else about Charlie, he is amazing, but the whole cast are. The choreography is fantastic too. I predict a generous sprinkling of 5* reviews. If only Regents Park would take a lesson from this in how to stage a traditional musical and making it stunning without messing with the source material....

Saw this last night, as it was the press night lots of celeb spotting to be had. It went down a storm. Lots of laughter and it was great to see something light and fun which wasn’t trying to be a metaphor for the state of the nation or hammer home a political message! The early reviews look very positive too, which must be a relief for all involved given the delay in getting this staged.

I did not like this at all. To me, Elle is completely miscast, I just did not believe that she was an ‘airhead’, entitled rich girl. There was no chemistry between her and Emmett or Warner and as a previous poster commented, some of her costumes are just hideous. The set makes no sense as it’s strands of plastic, like used to be in the doorways of betting shops with hair printed on it, but it’s not even the hair she is wearing for the show! The courtroom scenes were so overacted it felt like watching a Drag Race Rusical at times. I actually wanted to leave at the interval, but that’s something I hate to do, I want to give it a chance….but it didn’t get better. However, the audience seemed to love it, lots of whooping and a hollering and it was definitely a younger demographic than usual. Perhaps as a middle aged man, I’m not the target audience!

Is there no-one more 'highbrow' available to host? I get Manford has the household appeal for the huns and mums ratings but the few I've seen him host he appears a bit out of place, lost and the jokes never really seem to land. It really is getting beyond a joke now. He's becoming James Corden levels of ubiquitous. Careful what you wish for...next time it will be Rylan! To be fair to Jason, I've been to the awards when Michael Ball, Catherine Tate and Jason have hosted and Jason was hands down the best host and safest pair of hands, he didn't need a single retake of anything! But I do agree, it would be good to shake it up a bit :-)

We made our way to Trafalgar Square and had a drink before going to the theatre, just double checked the tickets to confirm the start time and noticed the date was the 28th…NEXT Sunday….doh! At least we didn’t turn up and make a fuss when someone else was sat in our seats, and we still have it to look forward to next week. First time I have ever got the date wrong, silly billy !!!!

I LOVED this. Great fun and a really talented cast. Hester’s love letter to a dead man is really moving and the other songs are very clever and funny. It looked pretty much sold out too, and it was a bit of a shock having to actually go to the bar myself to get a drink (table service is not here to stay…shame). I think this has the potential to get bigger and more well known, it definitely has legs.

That's great to hear. I'm still undecided about how I feel about Carousel but this I loved, I'm telling friends and I'm sure I'll go again towards the end of its run. It's great to have a new home grown musical to root for Had the weather been better, I would have given Carousel a try, there is something magical about Regent's Park on a warm evening, and if the show isn't really my thing, the venue and atmosphere makes up for it. But to be cold and wet and seeing something I probably don't like isn't a chance I want to take. And it will be nice to see something at Southwark Playhouse again without being pressed against a perspex screen!

I've not heard of it until this thread, so based on the positive comments here, I've decided to ditch Carousel at Regent's Park tonight (sounds like a grim show and grim weather) and get tickets for this instead. Looking forward to something fun and uplifting and in the dry! This is why I love this board so much - I get to hear about stuff I would never be aware of.

Was he the one everyone moaned about in 42nd Street? I saw him as Edna back in 2009 and thought he was good in the role. But then I liked him in 42nd Street, and in the other shows I've seen him in, with the exception of Too Close To The Sun which was such a terrible show that none of the cast could do anything about it! He did a turn as Mazeppa from Gypsy in 'Roles we'll never play' - he certainly doesn't take himself too seriously and was good in the other stuff I've seen him in. However, whenever I see him I immediately think "Wow, I can't believe Charlie Brooker is working in theatre now"!

I am actually off to Southampton this afternoon till Sunday so can't take advantage of that to day, but maybe next week? BTW- am seeing The Rocky horror Show tomorrow afternoon with Ore Odube as Brad. Thanks again for letting us know. Enjoy Rocky Horror and Southampton - I'm at MAST Mayflower Studios in Southampton tomorrow to see Educating Rita.

If plans change last minute, there are a few smaller shows that are worth seeing - 'Pippin' at Charing Cross Theatre is wonderful, Above the Stag in Vauxhall have a lovely new cabaret lounge with various acts, and their main theatre reopens on 28th July with 'Tommy on Top' and Southwark Playhouse always have something interesting going on. Not theatre, but the 'Top Secret Comedy Club' in Covent Garden has some great comedy either for free or a small fee. I'm sure there are loads more for those that find themselves all dressed up with no place to go!
I had a phone call while on the train to London to say the show we were on our way to had been cancelled, so managed to get 2 tickets for Afterlife at the Dorfman for 20 quid each. I think if you're travelling to see something, have a backup plan in mind, maybe support a smaller venue/show where the tickets are cheaper and you might find an unexpected gem. Sadly, at the moment, anything can be cancelled at very short notice.

I managed to get a table for 2 in row D for 90 each for a Saturday in previews, expensive but doable - you can also choose to add a gourmet pre show meal and bottle of champagne when selecting the tickets at a table, which then ups it to 165 each. Front row tables with the food/drink were 250 per person!!
