I can't find a thread for this one yet. I'm going to see it Saturday, anyone else been? The comments I've seen on Twitter are very positive.

I'm not keen on "guys" anyway but it particularly annoys me that several times when eating out with my mother & aunt we have had young waiters saying things like "Hi guys, what can I get you?". My mother & aunt are over 70 & I don't think waiters less than half their age should be addressing them like that. What is wrong with just saying "Hi" or "Hello" without using any additional words, then there's no risk of offending anyone. Reminds me of the Catherine Tate restaurant waitress sketch..."Hi Guys!":

This really annoys me: "Can I get a black coffee" instead of "Can I have...."

I've just had a mail from Ticketmaster:
"Hi there,
These events have been cancelled...
The event organisers have been in touch to let us know that the shows from 24 August to 5 September 2021 have been cancelled."
This info is on the Arts website:
COVID-19 Update, Monday 19 April 2021
Six the Musical has secured an extension to its run at the Lyric Theatre and will no longer be playing at the Arts Theatre from 24th August 2021 onwards.
The decision to play at a larger theatre during recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic allows for the production to sell a socially distanced seating layout with relative certainty.
We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused by this change.
Bookings between 24th August and 5th September 2021 will be automatically refunded by your ticket provider. Please bear with us as this may take a few days.
The Lyric only has booking open until the end of August, so not sure how long it will be there for. I was booked for 27th Aug at The Arts, so I have just rebooked for the same date at The Lyric.

Also have "Drag Queens of Pop" a few weeks prior, starring the Vivien, Tia Kofe and Veronica Green (+ more tba). Much lower price category than Alyssa I must say. For the £62.50 "top" price you could get a ticket to the big DRUKS2 tour next year. Thanks for the heads up - just got tickets for this now....40 quid instead of 122 for the same seats for Alyssa Edwards...will give that one a miss...shame!

I remember way back in the mid 90s seeing my first drag show in USA in a vey famous drag bar it was rammed. Full to the rafters lasted 3 hours one by one they would come on yep they looked good expensive wigs etc etc but each one just came out and mimed to a song ... never been so bored in my life ... no comedy ? No real talent no act ... the local crowd went mad for them ? I sat there and thought give me David dale , titti la camp . Dockyard Doris , and the likes anyday 👍 This! The first drag show I saw was in Vegas in the 90s and I was so shocked that all they did was lip sync. Very unimpressed, but that’s the difference between UK and US drag. As Lola Lasagne said, it’s all very well coming out and looking fabulous, but what are you going to do for the other 59 minutes? You’ve got to have an act.

Watched it last night. Must admit I didn't hear vMax swear It was at the end of the dance, a very loud 'Effing get in!', but if you watched on the iplayer, you won't hear it, they drowned it out with clapping. Watching live, it was very obvious.

Chichester have reduced their capacity by 50%, but that's still over 600. I'm sure a lot of theatres would be over the moon to have that many seats for sale, whereas our local Arts centre now only has a capacity of 32, down from 120. That can't be viable in the longer term.

To return this thread to its original goal, here’s Above the Stag reopening with a revival of Buyer & Cellar with Aaron Sidwell from 14 Oct. distanced seating in bubbles, face covering mandatory. abovethestag.org.uk/whatson/buyer-and-cellar/Thanks - booked! Watched the Michael Urie version on YouTube and thought it was great fun, so it will be good to see it live and get back to ATS.

Anyone else going to see this? I've got tickets for the matinee tomorrow, the first live theatre I've seen since March. Needless to say, I am very very very looking forward to it. I only discovered the BOAT last week - we went to see The Noise Next Door, an improv comedy show. It's a beautiful little venue, they've sorted out the social distancing really well, and the staff are all lovely. The gates open an hour before the performance, so you can take a picnic and drinks to enjoy before the show. Just hoping the thunderstorms stay away, but if it rains, never mind, I'll be watching an actual play with actual actors!

I think it's becoming quite common for US shows to come to the UK to be filmed because of the huge cost/experience difference. Disney chose to film their 'Aladdin' in London (even though they swapped out the cast for various international actors and used the Broadway script) and Nickelodeon also completely rebuilt the 'Spongebob' musical set in Plymouth, of all places, even though it's never played in the UK - if they can do that and still be cheaper than filming the existing US set, the cost differences must be staggering. Wow, I didn't know that about Spongebob, I wonder why there are such massive cost differences? I was surprised to see that some of the big productions on BroadwayHD were filmed in the UK, but now I know why. We have been so lucky to have NT Live, and then NT at Home, a 'National' theatre should be able to reach the whole country, not just people able to get to London. But I am still very much looking forward to actually sitting in a theatre auditorium and experiencing the excitement of a live show again....Hopefully soon...

I watched with an open mind (it had never been high on my list of things I wanted to see, for some reason it just wasn't something I was particularly interested in). I was pleasantly surprised, I enjoyed it a lot. However, after watching the beautifully filmed 'Small Island', the live capture seemed slightly off to me, and I couldn't put my finger on what, but after reading 'intoanewlife's comments on the editing, it made sense. At first, I couldn't get the scale of the show and wanted to be able to see what was happening on the whole stage, but there were just too many close ups. This article in the NY Times is interesting, explaining why more Broadway shows aren't available to stream: www.nytimes.com/2020/07/03/theater/theater-streaming-questions.htmlThis part in particular: "Britain and many other European countries got a head start because digital initiatives were made a condition for state funding, to help achieve accessibility, equity and sustainability. “Most countries started with that top-down view of digital, whereas in the United States it’s an upside-down approach, which is one reason everything has lagged behind so much here,” said Marquee TV’s Kirschner. He also points out that video recording is prohibitively more expensive in America. “To capture a Broadway production costs 5 to 10 times what it would overseas,” he said, which helps to explain the impressive film catalogs of Britain’s National Theater and France’s Comédie-Française, not to mention Canada’s Stratford Festival. " Perhaps the American's lack of experience in live capture of theatre explains the differences in recording/editing style. Anyway, I still enjoyed it and was glad I watched. But as Disney paid $75 million for it, I hope they see it as a good investment and do some more!

What an interesting thread this is. And a fine example of people sharing their opinions, no one is being shouted down and everyone is being polite and respectful. I personally feel a bit uneasy about giving children hormones if they think they are in the wrong body. While I'm certain that gender dysphoria must be a terrible condition and we should do all we can to support those people to transition to the correct gender, it has to be something that the individual is completely certain of before life-changing hormones and surgery, and children especially need to have the correct guidance. When I was a child in the 70s, I was a very 'girly' boy, played with toys for girls and would prefer the company of girls and women, and would dress up in my Mum's clothes and shoes. I'm sure if someone had said to me, 'would you like to be a girl?' I would have said yes. That would definitely have been the wrong choice for me, but in those days it clearly would not have been an option and wouldn't have even been something I would have been aware of. But are there 'tomboy' girls and effeminate boys today who have the possibility of gender correction and are taking that route instead of just accepting that they are a bit different to the rest if their peers? I don't know the answer, but it is interesting to read everyone else's views. When I worked in an office in the 90s, we were all given a letter to state that someone there was suffering from gender dysphoria and would be now be coming to the office dressed as a woman, which was something they had to do as part of the 2 year transitioning period before surgery, to be entirely sure it was the right thing to do. I thought she was the bravest woman I had ever seen, to leave work as a man on Friday and walk through the office as a woman on Monday. The company and the staff were completely supportive and she went on to have her surgery and is now happy in the body she should have been born with.

Please dont hate me but I really like Jenna Russell Me too! I first saw her in Merrily, then Grey Gardens, Fun Home, and Bridges of Madison County and each time I've been really impressed. I don't really get the dislike for her, but there you go, we can't all like the same thing.
For my two-penneth worth in this thread...I hate anything Shakespeare, and trying to make it all modern by setting in on a cruise ship in the 1980s, but getting the characters to speak in olde fashiondy English just turns me cold. I've tried and tried, but I cannot engage (or understand, or care about it) at all.

Just phoned to ask for my refund, it's too much money to be sat in ATG's bank account rather than mine, and especially as they don't know when it will be rescheduled to yet. But not too bad, about 10 minute wait on the call, was told I will be added to a list for the refunds, not sure how long it will take, but they said they will email when it's done...so fingers crossed.

I loved the first few episodes, thought it was all beautifully shot and lavish. But I read a review somewhere saying that it almost dislocates a shoulder with all the patting itself on the back it does in the last couple of eps, and I couldn't agree more! I know it's supposed to be an alternative history, but it did stretch that a bit too far.
{Spoiler - click to view} The idea that a black gay man and a white gay man would be able to walk the red carpet together and kiss and there would only be a few boos (and this is at a time when it is illegal to be gay) was ridiculous. Also, including an interracial relationship in the movie would never have happened in that day and age...and when they said that after the movie was released, it was so good that the racist protests 'just melted away' was also ludicrous!!
Shame, it was a great premise and subject to explore. Also, what went on at the gas station was true, and Ernie was based on a real person - Scotty Bowers. The 'Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood' documentary gives all the juicy details - I think it was on Netflix, not sure if it's still there. Another documentary about that time and what the closeted gay actors had to go through is 'Tab Hunter Confidential', that was also on Netflix. They're both worth a watch to give some background to the TV series...and show why the last 2 episodes didn't quite work....

Very sad news about the CFT 2020 season, I had tickets for virtually everything. It's the right decision, ending the uncertainty means they can focus on coming back bigger and better next year, I'm sure it's strong enough and has enough support to survive, but it must be heartbreaking for the people that work there.

Just had a mail from Chichester Festival Theatre:
"ARCHIVE RECORDINGS FOR ALL THE FAMILY TO ENJOY
Following on from the fantastic reception to our online broadcast of Flowers for Mrs Harris (available until 8 May), we are delighted to announce we will also be sharing archive recordings of our 2018 production of David Walliams's The Midnight Gang and CFYT's 2017 Christmas production, Beauty and the Beast.
The Midnight Gang (adapted by Bryony Lavery, music and lyrics by Joe Stilgoe) will be released this Thursday, 30 April and Beauty and the Beast (adapted by Anna Ledwich, music and lyrics by Richard Taylor) will follow on Thursday 21 May. Especially suitable for ages 7 and up, both will be available on our website for 30 days and will be free to watch.
Performances of both productions were filmed, edited and broadcast live to the children's wards at St Richard's Hospital and Worthing Hospital during their original runs. Thanks to the generous agreement and support of all the artists involved, we're delighted to be able to share the archive recordings from these performances so that families can come together to enjoy more theatre at home.
To connect with as many people as possible in our community, these broadcasts will be captioned for D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences, and Polish-language captions will also be available. An audio introduction will help set the scene for blind and partially sighted audiences."

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this one yet (did a search of the thread and couldn't find it): Wise Children on iplayer here: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0892kf6/wise-children"Director Emma Rice brings her unique, musical and exuberantly impish vision to Angela Carter’s great last novel, in a production that has been seen at theatres across the UK. A big, bawdy tangle of theatrical joy and pain, Wise Children is a celebration of show business, family, forgiveness and hope. Expect show girls and Shakespeare, sex and scandal, mischief and mistaken identity - and butterflies galore. Loved by audiences and critics since its premiere at The Old Vic, London, in 2019, Wise Children has been seen by theatregoers across the UK. With support from The Space, it was filmed live at York Theatre Royal in 2019" I didn't know anything about this or what to expect, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm looking forward to watching this tonight (and will make a donation to charity he is supporting). I had a quick check this morning, and dunno if it was just my browser, but the audio seemed a teeny bit out of synch, so I've downloaded it from YouTube. This means you can then play it back with vlc media player, which allows you to adjust the audio track synch to get it just right.
