Well it seems we are getting a theatre 'convention' There's an article over on the website we do not speak of. Stagecon www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/stagecon-london-2018-tickets-48208374546I have many friends who enjoy conventions for Sci-Fi and film. They've never been my personal 'bag' but I guess it makes sense for the model to migrate over to Stagey stuff if there's a market for it.

The performances and panels would have to be very good for me to put up with what I imagine will be the sort of crowd that waits at stage doors for Carrie Hope Fletcher screaming... If too many people have this mentality, then the only people who show up will be the ones you're trying to avoid. As a three-time BroadwayCon attendee, my advice is to be the change. (Or at least the difference.) Related thread: theatreboard.co.uk/thread/4582/west-end-version-broadway-con

49thand8th you make a good point there. Maybe it's worth a shot. My only worry is that I'm a bit more old school with my taste in musicals especially. I would rather go to a panel discussion at the Nash than one with two young writers of a pop musical. Saying that, if Anthony Rapp goes then I'm there!

I did know we had a previous thread on the matter, but thought a new thread for the now confirmed one made sense. Mods do merge if the two together make more sense!

Its a great idea. I've toyed with it myself but live in the wrong part of the country and don't have the contacts to pull it off effectively. Something like this should be great for calming down the Stage Door massive. If hardcore fans can get their photos and autographs annually at a big convention its going to make the lives of a lot of actors much easier.

I should hope that StageCon will have as many non-mainstage events as BroadwayCon does, and that they've learned from BroadwayCon's mistakes or missteps. The first year of BC was bumpier (as you can expect), but the second and third definitely had more thoughtful programming and the small panels I attended were excellent.

I'd also imagine it's a great platform for shows transferring like Come From Away to advertise before opening here.
I think it would be a missed opportunity if CFA didn't especially as it may be a lesser known show in the UK to many people.
I'm sure they could get Capt Beverley Bass to come over. She goes to everything!

Personally couldn’t think of a worse way to appreciate Theatre, for me “the play’s the thing”
Will be spending my own StageCon in Stratford Upon Avon on that day - Troilus and Cressida Unwrapped - Tamburlaine - Troilus and Cressida
all for a similar price.

It does sound very interesting and fun and right up my street but as much as I would like to go to it does sound like , as the name suggests, a bit of a con. I would also imagine they are trying to appeal to a younger audience so the pricing seems a bit excessive.

Having just read the article, I think it’s a great idea, but for me personally, the cost is bit too much once I’ve factored in travel and accommodation costs. I would be looking at £250 for a full weekend, though a day pass would be easier on the wallet. I don’t know what they charge at the BW con whether the ticket prices are comparable. For me personally, stuff like this would need a bit more notice than 3 months to get things in place to attend.

£85 sounds cheap compared to the sci-fi model - though I guess that autographs and photo sessions are extra?
Mind it does depend what you get for the money. Had a great time at a couple of sci-fi cons that included a BRIAN BLESSED Q&A and a masked/cos-play ball in the ticket price, where the tv guests ended up hanging out in the bar area with the plebs. Will never forget the time the guy in the Pac-Man costume and his friends the ghosts decided to start a conga line, and the whole dance floor went for it - superheroes, Daleks. Weeping Angels, Stormtroopers, and all. It was joyous.

My impression of three years of BroadwayCon is that it is not QUITE for my demographic (someone well into adulthood who lives in NYC and while not rich, doesn't struggle to see shows I want), but more for the more isolated, younger person far from New York City who has no one to talk to in real life about something they love very much and that is an ephemeral art form.

I think perhaps you are taking what for the most part are tongue in cheek comments about the convention scene in general far too seriously. I've just read the whole thread and see nothing that I would consider unwelcoming

Man, you guys are so welcoming to future theatregoers. I honestly would hate to give that impression. I just think there are other great initiatives that encourage the healthier side of going to the theatre. £10 tickets to James Graham plays for example! There's going to be young people begging their parents to pay £85 because they want to meet someone they admire for a minute. Maybe I just don't really get it.

Yea, the responses here are so delightfully British, they made me laugh out loud. I think (as an outsider looking in from abroad) that the British are just far more down to Earth about that kind of thing while Americans are more effusive in their appreciation (see also: entrance applause for performers, the whole stage door circus on Broadway these days, etc.).
However, I think the major difference to the more common sci-fi/fantasy conventions is that those are usually the only chance for fans to meet actors from their favorite shows in the flesh during signing sessions, posing for photos, etc., buy collectibles, merchandise, etc. and of course also dress up for cosplay. I haven't attended a con myself, but I have friends who go fairly regularly and their reports always make me a bit jealous. One's been "collecting" meetings with the cast of Firefly across various conventions through the years and her quest is almost complete by now.
When it comes to theatre though, there's always the option to meet performers at the stage door for photos and signatures, buy merchandise in the theatre and so on. And while I'm sure there are people who've re-created costumes of their favorite shows/roles, the "cosplay" thing isn't really an element (or I'm just too old and lame to know about them). So I'm really not sure what people will get out of this StageCon, but while I'm doubtful, I'll be happy to be proven wrong. At least Q&A panels or workshops could be a fun and unique thing.

I think perhaps you are taking what for the most part are tongue in cheek comments about the convention scene in general far too seriously. I've just read the whole thread and see nothing that I would consider unwelcoming It's that and the snobbery and gatekeeping I've already seen with BroadwayCon — fans and actors assuming it's an entire day or two or three of the stage door experience when it's not really like that. Enthusiasm? OK! We were all nerds once. I didn't get into theatre until I was 16 and even then the internet wasn't that easily accessed, so I didn't know what I was missing. These kids are missing something and need validation as far as their relatively niche interests. The thing about StageCon is that because the UK is that much smaller, I imagine it's not as huge a deal to go to London from some parts as it would be to go to NYC from many parts of the US.

It seems a little weird that the tickets for that will include access to ALL M&Gs, as these are usually extras. I am afraid that if someone more famous is announced they will put extra tix for pics/autographs with them.

I am afraid that if someone more famous is announced they will put extra tix for pics/autographs with them. Well, the tickets include the opportunity to book access to all M&Gs. Nearer to the event you have to register for the sessions you want to attend, so you could spend all that money and end up not getting to attend any of the panels/workshops/M&Gs that you wanted.
