I’m not convinced it will return and I think theatre availability would be the biggest factor since you cant go too big or too small. Personally loved the proportions and interiors of the Savoy, really fit the show and has that same faded glamour too. The funnel-like volume really allowed you to zone in on the lone actors on a blank stage and even the end of row seats didn't feel that off to the side. Spatially the St James is kind of the opposite- wider and squatter and capacity larger by a half- everything will feel so different!

I suspected they needed a bigger theatre just because Broadway is more expensive than the West End in terms of running costs plus ATG/Jujamcyn's other Broadway theatres are all booked.

The Shubert’s offered them the Barrymore, but Jamie Lloyd wanted the St. James.

It’s doing an extended run in New York too and with the huge St. James to fill and a fairly recent production of Sunset in NY, I imagine tickets may be a little easier to come by over there, especially in the winter months. Broadway ticket buying habits have moved to very last minute with tickets for even Cabaret/Merrily readily available up until the day of the performance and with dynamic pricing.

Oh I'd guess that we've seen the last of Scherzy as Norma in the UK, and probably the last of this production here. She'll want to take on other roles, and any huge A List star will want to take over on Broadway as the pay will be so much better (a proper A Lister can easily earn 50-75k a week on Broadway and that aint happening here) Sad, but I can't see us getting this back any time soon I too don’t see it retuning but those kind of salaries are already being paid over here..!

I'm sure it will return one day but I'll be very surprised if it's with Tom and Nicole..

They are but it's not nearly as common here as it is on Broadway - it's standard there, it's largely in exceptional circumstances here.

I'm sure it will return one day but I'll be very surprised if it's with Tom and Nicole.. Joe will be easy enough to recast I think but since Norma was basically created around Nicole, they'll have to reimagine the characterisation around the next inspired star casting, as I still think it didn't quite work as well with Rachel doing the exact mannerisms and choreo (kept wishing Rachel had been allowed her 'own' Norma so to speak!)

I wondered that - anyone know how much Nicole was on for Sunset, or someone like Beverley Knight in Sister Act for example?

Trying to think of examples where something was genuinely only ever intended for a discreet limited run, it massively exceeded expectations, won loads of awards, and then came back (to London)!
Am slightly stumped. There must be examples though?

Though I don't know what the original intentions were for that! (And of course the return had a different set and design).

Dare I say ‘Heathers’? I know TOP isn’t West End, but it extended its original run, won ‘some’ prizes, misguidedly went into a W/E playhouse and is now eyeing its 4th(?) season.

Marie Osmond! I only just discovered what a singer she is; why hasn't she been more high profile over the years? Perhaps she is in the USA. Could be a great Norma. Perhaps not for Jamie Lloyd's version, and younger people wouldn't know her I guess.
Didn't realise she's taken a very personal ownership of ALW's 'Unexpected Song' which she sings in tribute to fans. It can join that special category of songs like 'Wind Beneath My Wings' and 'Everything's As If We Never Said Goodbye' (in the way Streisand claimed it) that seems a humble thank you to the quiet supporters, but also says 'it's so great you turn out for ME, in fact let's talk some more about ME' lol Start 2'10" if the copied timestamp doesn't work.

The issue with Sunset returning is what is available theatre wise since the Savoy won't be free anytime soon and a lot of the 1000+ theatres are booked up.

I know she isn’t a big enough household name, but I would love to see Victoria Hamilton-Barritt take this on. She’s an absolute icon.

From the looks of things already though, advance ticket sales seem to be doing well. At least from the 5 dates I've been consistently checking from the day they first started. I'm going on October 12 and was one of the first buyers where you had your choice of seats. Seeing how many seats are already gone when we're 6 months away is surprising to me in 2024.

Enjoyed this book lately, found it by accident, already two years old, but never heard of it. Murder at the Adelphi: A rehearsal diary of the original London production of the musical ‘Sunset Boulevard’ by Peter Gale www.amazon.co.uk/Murder-Adelphi-rehearsal-production-Boulevard/dp/1802275207Very detailed rehearsal diary of the original production, details a lot of changes to the show during rehearsals / previews / after. Also a lot of gossip / details about the LuPone / ALW-clash that developed. Entertaining read.

Oh wow -after listening to Michael Riedel's podcast that had audio interviews with ALW, Patti and Glenn, which helped flesh out what he had previously written in book form - am surprised to find another Sunset thing like this that has been off the radar for me! Looking forward to downloading it tonight. Although I really have a lot of work to do, I can see being sidetracked by this pretty easily
