How would this work though if plans were already in place for Chichester's own production? If Justin Audibert was planning to direct, for example, or if the designer or musical director were already in place.
Does that all just get thrown out?
We've been talking about it on here for a few months so a lot must have been in the planning stages.
Happy Xmas everybody, btw.

If you haven't got round to it, his memoir 'Stage Blood' about his time at the National Theatre, is a must-read!

Such a lovely prospect, though I've got a horrible feeling this could become a Fletcher family affair...
Jungle Queen as Mrs Brown & old big hair as the villain.

Saw this last night & thought it was lovely. Doesn't quite the scale the heights of Paddington 2 but its still a very endearing couple of hours with lots of good set pieces & cameos from our stalwarts.
Chalamet was great & I think it will go some way to opening up parts for him in an even more off-beat or even more mainstream direction.
Songs were surprisingly good too, and you could hear every lyric!!
It's been noted by some how it captures the feel of family musicals from the 60's and I would definitely concur. A treat.
Four chocolatey stars from me.

This reminds me of a Twitter thread from a while back where somebody stated that they always dump out their left over popcorn on the floor when leaving the cinema, purely out of habit. You would be amazed by how many people replied saying they did exactly the same thing. Unfathomable. Literally why though? For what purpose? How does a habit like that even form? People are terrible. Some theatres don't help themselves though. I know that DMT theatres have very few bins in their venues because "Cameron doesn't like them". When I worked at a cinema, I witnessed a kid do that just as we were opening the doors for the end of the film. I gave them such a bollocking. I don't think they had a parent with them though, I wouldn't have been brave enough to otherwise. Re: CamMac & bins, I noticed that at Wyndham's last night. I had to finish my coffee from McDonald's quickly in the queue to get in & was then surprised there were no bins in the foyer. Lovely BO person took it off me & put it in his bin.

May I ask, whilst I appreciate the strike that was on, has principle filming all been completed now? Doesn't sound like it, yet. I believe they're not able to do any more filming in the UK, so they must be setting something up in the US but there's been nothing yet to confirm they've started up again. I don't know if JB's 4 days of him shooting with stand-in's has taken much off the remaining 10 days of filming which needs to be done. Even if they have to do it after Xmas, they'll still be fine to make their release date, surely.

The inclusion of Jay McGuiness makes me think we deserve a cast made up solely of Strictly winners!

Think it's one I'm going to have to watch again, because on first viewing (at LFF) I was so confused as to how Claire Foy and Jamie Bell could be playing Andrew Scott's parents that it took me out of the film. I'm assuming you've worked it out by now? That's how old they were when they died. How discombobulating! I'm going to see it again when it comes out too.

Those FB comments are WILD!!! Sounds like they should just quietly close this down before it comes to London. When was the last time something like that happened, do you think?

Can’t complain if true. Love that show - and guessing it won’t take place in Blackpool with Sheader gone? This season will be Sheader's swansong.

I saw this last night at Cine-city, the Brighton Film Festival (is that where you were?) and also loved it BUT it was soooo sad!! Almost too sad, I thought. My friends and I were split on how much we liked the ending but we all did a fair bit of crying throughout. It was also incredibly sexy, which was nice.
Agree, the acting was phenomenal and it struck a lot of chords with all of us (gay guys in our mid-late 30's). The music was also completely divine.
I'm intrigued to check out the source material. Andrew Haigh is a superb film-maker.

Poll added in anticipation of tonight’s first performance. Do we need a separate spoiler thread for this like we had for Harry Potter? Definitely.

No announcement yet...
And CFT would usually tease that something is being announced before doing so, surely?
It would seem a bit odd to have this appearing before the start of the next season (usually late March/April) because the weather wouldn't be ideal for the outdoors stuff.

Not good at all, according to my theatre spies.
Both commented on how this play doesn't focus on the beginning or the end of the actual case, just a section in the middle. This ends up making it feel dramatically inert and pointless.
Very muted response from the audience.

This has mysteriously had it's Thursday matinee cancelled tomorrow at very short notice. Anybody got any scoop?
The comments on the official FB after last night's first performance are particularly bad, some saying it's the worst thing they've ever seen. I have two sets of friends going tonight, will report back with their opinions.

It's a classic John Cassavetes film from the 70's, you PHILISTINE!! Will that make it better? I thought he made sleepy art films and conspiracy thrillers? Shaming people for not having the same cultural reference points as you isn’t really the one. I was joking, promise. I've indulged in my fair share of Channel 5. If Sheridan was doing 'Pam Ayres does the Cotswolds: the Musical', I'd be very impressed.

So, a musical version of one of any number of channel 5 9pm ‘on every night this week’ dramas, that plague our very existence? Great. I’m normally dribbling on the sofa by half nine, so not for me ta. It's a classic John Cassavetes film from the 70's, you PHILISTINE!!

Trailer for the movie.
Again, like so many before, have not included any songs from the show to drop the slightest hint that this is a musical!

I'm excited. I saw the Waddingham/Nunn production at Chichester and just thought it was heavenly. I remember most of the numbers bringing the house down.
It was the first time I'd seen her and didn't realise what a star she was. And now, thankfully, IS.

From Arifa Akbar's two-star Guardian review, her line "the epitome of theatre as light entertainment" could probably be borrowed as a publicity quote. Of course, God forbid anybody enjoys themselves at these ticketed spectacles.

Have just been through a huge list of British actresses & if it's not Minnie or Miriam Margolyes then I'm stumped.
Obviously lots of others with the M&R but absolutely none have done a musical before.
Can we have another clue?

Can't believe nobody's talked about this since mid July. No rehearsal pics, clips, teasers etc etc being thrown around! Not much buzz! Anyway SAW was very much the soundtrack to my closeted gay childhood. In fact Kylie Minogue's The Locomotion was the very first 7inch single I bought. (From Woolworth's. Obvs) Intrigued as to what this will be like. I mean the back catalogue is immense. But the one week sit downs in every UK regional theatre going does make me think it's gonna be cheap cheap cheap. Hopefully there tonight if Storm Ciaran allows me to make the trek from Brighton to Manchesterford. The last two musicals I saw at The Opera House were Bat Out Of Hell and The Cher Show, both of which had the two worst audiences I have ever experienced in my entire life. Have no doubt that this show will degenerate into a similar affair but absolutely praying that the first couple of shows might have some more theatre fans in and less of the ProsecHuns night out brigade. (For balance Jesus Christ Superstar at The Palace was fine). You're going all the way from Brighton?!!! Why not just see it in Southampton?

I remember somebody on here saying that they'd witnessed Diana Rigg asking for a prompt while in Hay Fever at Chichester, I'm assuming quite early in the run. She was 70 at the time too. I think she just had to say "LINE!" and then got a response.
That would have probably taken me more out of the play than somebody almost incorporating it into the dialogue as mentioned above in these instances. They're all such wonderful pros, aren't they? Especially Janine.

This is in much better shape than the preview I saw. The interval now sits before heading to the ball (a la My Fair Lady) which is great. Patsy has flourished even further and is so bloody good in this. Bertie has toned the Trunchball-ness in his voice down and is shouting a lot less of his lines, so it feels like he's got room to move about in it a bit more. Still obsessed with the woman playing Mrs Higgins - she's fab. The ball still isn't quite right, and I'm not a fan of the guy playing Doolittle (although he's settled into it). 4 stars for me - it will absolutely divide people, but I enjoyed. The woman playing Mrs Higgins is Sylvestra Le Touzel and she is indeed a fabulous actress. In fact, she should have been playing Eliza too...

I saw this interesting play last Monday Very atmospheric and in many ways ahead of its time Excellent acting and insight into a culture I didn’t know much about Always love Martina Laird In many ways it was funny seeing this and Clyde’s one after another as both are about food as an allegory for beliefs and wider issues Unfortunately it was sparsely attended and I hope this improves after the good reviews out last week At least it was parsley attended though!
