There were definitely a number of 'bumps in the night' when I worked at Drury Lane. Well, it is reportedly the most haunted theatre in the world. www.londonparanormal.com/theatres/

I saw this about 25 years ago - and it was fabulous! If you like musical variety type shows, spectacular costumes & sets, and especially Christmas , you will love this. The year I saw it the Navivity scene featured a cavalcade of live animals on stage.

Miriam Margolyes loudly announcing to the entire bar that she never tells actors when she's in the audience because they'd be so nervous if they knew and it's so unfair to them. Of course they're nervous. It's difficult throwing rotten vegetables from the stage, and they might miss her and waste the throw. Though to be fair, they'd have to be pretty poor shots to miss her.

Southwark Playhouse a few years ago ( I won't name the show & embarrass the cast) - must have been all of 15 people. And all except me chose to sit as far away from the stage as possible.

Not musicals related ( as I can see most suggestions have been) but a couple of my favorites.
Buzz Buzz! Playwrights, Actors and Directors at the National Theatre - Jonathan Croall - an interesting collection of essays relating to NT productions.
Players of Shakespeare volumes 1-6 - (various) -essays by actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company & National Theatre on the preparation and performance of a major Shakespearean role. About 12 -13 different actors in each volume. Some are more interesting than others - some actors aren't great essay writers!

If you like Paul McGann, he reads quite a few audio books. Most notably Pat Barkers 'Regeneration' trilogy and Bernard Cornwel's Sharpe series. David Tennant also does loads of audio work. There are cd's available of the BBC Radio productions of Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Mansfield Park among others. Check out Amazon, some are only available as downloads. Also BBC Radio 4 has a Drama of the Week, which can be downloaded.

Actually, Hugh Jackman was a musicals man long before Wolverine. He made his name her in Oz in shows like Beauty & the Beast and Sunset Boulevarde , then went on to do Oklahoma for the NT. in London. I've seen him in concert - he not only sings he dances too!
BTW - if you don't like Hugh you may want to steer clear of his new musical about PT Barnum!

Who is directing ? Doran has directed all four of those Roman plays before. Two of them (Coriolanus and Antony & Cleo) are also notoriously difficult to cast, so we need to see the actors - I expect they'll be a long time announcing casting. Doran isn't directing any of the Roman plays.

Just announced as part of the Sydney Theatre Company's 2017 season, running from 6th November 2017.
"The film’s original writer-director PJ Hogan has updated his screenplay into a dazzling new stage show, bringing the story into the present but keeping all the irreverence and naughtiness of the film along with its dark edge.
Director Simon Phillips (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) leads a stellar creative team, with eye-popping sets and costumes from Gabriela Tylesova (Love Never Dies) and original music by award-winning singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. With a big cast and a live band, this will be the theatre event of the year.
With songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus & Stig Anderson originally written for ABBA "

I wonder how Star Wars would turn out as a musical Often thought have I that a stage version would look well in the Dominion, young hamiltonaddict. Musical, then say I, "May the Major Fourth Be With You." My coat I shall get. Do you think there would be a Han solo? You get the coats, I'll hail a taxi theatremonkey.....

I know most people hated the play, but I thought the staging for the NT Treasure Island was quite spectacular. They certainly got their money's worth out of that drum revolve.
Loved the recent RSC Richard II. The metal curtains worked surprisingly well at the RST, less so at the Barbican, and best of all at BAM in New York! Actually, the BAM Harvey Theatre is just gorgeous all over.

I can't see anything wrong with this. It's My Fair Lady - it was hardly going to have a radical modern staging was it?
Plus it's only running for 2 months, then touring to other states in the new year. So needs to be packable. If that makes sense.

I stay in Brooklyn. For the price of a broom closet with shared bath in Manhattan, I can get a decent double room & breakfast across the bridge.
Just booked for Love Love Love ( I admit primarily to gaze upon Richard Armitage!) and it's surprisingly already 60% sold for the dates I wanted.

No, but only just over a week to wait for the launch. I'm hoping for more Richard Roxburgh and Ryan Corr. I think with Andrew Upton now gone we'll see less of the moaning Russian's plays at least.

I can't see a reason to start shows later just because you'll now have Night Tube services. Now maybe some of the people who avoided evening shows because of transport problems will now reconsider their options. Trains in Sydney run on most lines until about 1am every day (when Night Bus kicks in till about 4am) and our theatre shows usually start 7.30 - 8 pm.
I remember being surprised on my first visit to London to discover the Tube didn't run longer hours. And not at all on Christmas Day!

I am from Sydney, Australia and now live in London. Whilst I have a list of reasons as long as my arm for being here, my frustration over the Sydney Theatre scene is one of those reasons.
If I were a musicals fan I would tear my hair out living in Sydney ( well , anywhere in Australia actually). But luckily I am more a straight theatre girl, so while I don't have the choices I would in London nor NY, it's not too bad here. Prices though are terribly steep - and usually no price range ( ie. all seats tend to be the same price no matter where located)

It will be a West End revival of Camelot . Tom as Lance, Taytay as Guinevere, Sir Ken as Arthur.
One shouldn't joke...

I feel like this thead is turning into an episode of friends. "They don't know we know they know we know" Was genuinely thinking the exact same! So is this the bit now where Phoebe shows one of them her bra?

Hi all...... I heard through a friend that rumour has it Tom Hiddleston is returning to the West end for something? I assume a play, but I would love to see him as one of the princes from Into the Woods! But I have seen no proof of such a thing occurring....... My friend says it would be after he finishes filming Thor Ragnarok! Does any one have any facts or even speculations or hopes....please tell me! Thanks a billion . Sam......... My immediate thought on the Hedwig thread was that I would love to see Tom Hiddleston in the role and he would work well in it. Not sure if he can even remotely hold a tune though... Yes he can sing, and also play . Word is though that he's going straight from Thor Ragnarock onto Avengers Infinity, which has already started pre-production. Of course Loki's part may not be huge so no telling how long that will take.

Doesn't Melbourne have a more lively musical theatre scene than Sydney? If you are talking main stream musicals, not really. It just depends on what show you want to see - you won't get more than 2 usually in each city at any time. Most of the big productions will tour the capitals, switching about after a few months. For example, Matilda is now playing in Melbourne but started last year in Sydney, Singing in the Rain just moved from Melbourne to Sydney, and Sound of Music just moved from Sydney to Adelaide. Occasionally you will have a show that doesn't tour. I know Once was only in Melbourne because they couldn't get the venues to tour it.

Look on the bright side. The kangaroos are so much more plentiful in Australia than on Broadway. And you don't have Donald Trump. I find most kangaroos lie about their musical theatre abilities. Although they excel at hip hop. I'll get my coat. .....

Hedwig played Sydney 10 years ago with iOTA in the lead. Grey Gardens played the Seymour Centre last December.
The non-mainstream musicals are out there, just not at the big theatres. We only really have 3 theatres in Sydney that take on the big musicals, so they have to go with the ones that will get the bums on seats to pay the bills. Sadly that means endless runs of Sound of Music & Les Miz.

And I'm not excited at the prospect Dorans Richard III. Here's hoping the casting is good Isn't it obvious David Tennant will do it ? Not really. It's not a role DT has ever mentioned as being on his list ( yes, he has a list) Not saying he couldn't be tempted however - it's still Shakespeare.

Much older ones not so much, but I've seen newer screenings that are NT Live quality, multi-camera with close ups. I found David Tennant's phone number in one NT Archives box! Presumably he doesn't still have the same number he had in 1995.
You never know with Mr Tennant, he doesn't seem to throw out any of his wardrobe!
I watched The Pillowman at the NT archives. The quality was not great, single fixed camera & the odd sound glitch. But as they are meant for research & not general cinematic viewing, it's good enough.
The staff were very friendly & brought me lots of other things to look through as well without asking - call sheets , prompt books etc.
I found amongst the wardrobe notes instructions for the same Mr Tennant - something like 'do not enter dressing room straight away after show as David strips straight off to shower' ! (He was covered in blood at the end of the play)

I think Caryl Churchill's plays are over-rated. They make the actors work terribly hard for very little substance.
