I don't know where this thread belongs I hope mods will sort me out, General Chat or Musicals. Knowing that a production of "Hello Dolly!" with Imelda Staunton is scheduled for the west end in 2020 and having seen a clip of Craig Revel Horwood on strictly this evening, I can't help thinking he would make the better Dolly Levi. What with all the quips and one liners? Sing out Louise! Go!

A true giant of so many of "the arts". I used to love watching him on the Michael Parkinson chat shows and enjoying his stories about theatre world. Sadly it would appear he was robbed of that in his later years. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-50574472

About time that Petula got made a Dame surely. One would think so. She is a CBE which I think is one below a Dame, but it's a long while coming!!

According to cast tweets, they warmed up to her songs last night and Michael Ball turned up with a birthday cake. I heard some of her fans were singing "happy birthday" outside the stage door.

Today being her 87th birthday, I guess Petula is the oldest actress currently appearing in the West End?

From The Stage review: “This isn’t the first time a member of clan Strallen has had a pop at Poppins – Scarlett originated the role on stage in 2004...” Sums up what a load of crap the review is. The reviewer certainly seems to have got out of bed the wrong side before seeing the show!!!

I see Farage has given up the ghost before the whole nonsense kicks off in favour of sniping on the side. Shame in a way because I had hoped his raving looney party would have split the tory vote. Perhaps it will still fingers crossed!

The only reason I returned to this show having not enjoyed it 15 years ago was Zizi Strallen and she did not disappoint. She has superb "placement" and seems to be really enjoying herself which is quite infectious. Otherwise I found it all rather dull and just don't think this stage adaptation is very good. I never understood the park statues coming to life. where Mrs Corry comes in or the awful doll sequence and still don't. The Robertson Ay character is unnecessary and not performed well here. The set looked cheap - I am presuming this is the touring one as I seem to recall much more detail originally. Top marks to Claire Moore (as ever) but I am I alone in thinking Petula Clark was simply an embarrassment? Living legend and all that but she looks unsteady and really cannot sing - come back Julia Sutton who delivered it superbly. I wasn't keen on Mrs Banks hysteria and thought Joseph Millson lacked gravitas. Charlie Stemp was fine. The sound was not so hot. I guess it will be there for a while but Prince Edward, DO please employ proper bar staff who know how to serve drinks! Sounds like you had a fun night!!!

About 2hr 50 but it felt much longer Did I hear somewhere that they've added a new song for Petula Clark? If so, that would push an extra few minutes onto the run time. That was mooted early on.

Given that Henry is dating Alice, perhaps they will become a baking power couple Or even a baking powder couple?

I guess posting about this "ancient movies" channel will have me branded as an old fart, but I'll take a hit for the team! I know there are quite a few fans of the late, great and lovely Dora Bryan on here, well this weekend she is featured in movies and discussions on this channel. They are also showing the (then) ground breaking play about Quentin Crisp "The Naked Civil Servant". I haven't seen this for a number of years and younger readers might like to get acquainted with this piece of gay social history. talkingpicturestv.co.uk

Well I thought that was fantastic. TB’s voice might be an acquired taste but for sheer bombast and delivery it’s hard to fault her. Production values great (thank god, after Springer), band excellent, and not a single dud in the supporting cast. Agnes had me literally LOL-ing. I agree Burly. There's lots of tremolo in Miss Bennett, but she delivers in every department as do the rest of the cast and musicians. Brilliant!

Were we in the same auditorium last night? I was the one who asked the question about a stage version! Obvs I didn't know about the Jake Shears musical version. Sounds like prime Hope Mill material to me!!! Did he say if that production will have any future life? No, he didn't.

I want to be clear. I do not like this sort of thing and it should not be shown as family viewing at peak time. If the good lord intended man to skate on ice he would have given him flippers instead of feet.

Part of a nationwide tour I think. I’m going to the Lowry in October. It’s an interview set up, rather than a talk I think. Were we in the same auditorium last night? I was the one who asked the question about a stage version! Obvs I didn't know about the Jake Shears musical version. Sounds like prime Hope Mill material to me!!!

Just out of interest, what's the most anyone's ever paid for panto tickets? I ask because I was looking at going to Mother Goose in Canterbury as it's one of those pantos I've always wanted to see and haven't yet, but it would cost just over £90 for two of us. I'd expect to pay that (grudgingly!) in London, but since when did provincial panto become quite so expensive? I know theatres make most of their money etc, but unless the biggest star in the world is in it I think anything above £40 each is excessive. You won't even get one decent ticket at the Palladium for your £90!!!!!

It would leave most of the downstairs lot at a loose end though... until Mrs Patmore decides to elope with her shopkeeper. Now that's a movie I'd pay good money to see Beryl Patmore, domestic temptress!! Cue grocery puns such as - they would set the pulses racing.

Yes, I was one of the seven people in the cinema this evening who could be arsed. That's going to set the box office on fire. Yes, as talkinghead says it very much delivers.

Oh well, I suppose he wasn’t really serious enough about It to knuckle down to it. Too busy ‘having a laugh’. Think on James, while you’re having a laugh someone else is nicking the prize from under your nose. Life lessons! Scary Spice needs to buck her ideas up now or it’ll be her next week. The posh vet is ver ver Celia Johnson, speaks so fast and clipped I can barely understand what she’s going on about. Was it a chicken?. Alice is good but a bit too class swot-ish to be likeable. The good looking bloke who jogs with his bf is understated and classy with the eye for detail. His fig roles were ridiculously perfect. Watch him! And not just his fig rolls that were perfect. I agree he is one to watch. Also organ man might be a slow burner. This post just made me laugh so much. "The good looking bloke who jogs with his bf.." "His fig rolls were ridiculously perfect" and then "organ man might be a slow burner". Wonderful alliteration thank you both!

I suppose it depends on the audience to whom the trailer is played. I can't imagine the audience of "The Lego Movie" or "Fast and Furious" queuing to see Downton, but there will be an audience and I'll be amongst it. You're going to be mindblown when you find out that people can like multiple things that are all very different from each other. My family loved The Lego Movie, spent some time in the Fast And Furious movieverse this summer, and the only reason we won't be queuing for Downton is because we'll book our tickets online and sneak in supermarket snacks, which bypasses most of the need to stand in a line. OK everybody, I was using those two film titles to make a point. I chose them because they were in the top 10 films of the week. I realise people have wide and varied interests.

After the trailer played last night, somebody in the audience very loudly said "God, that looks AWFUL!" to much laughter from the rest of us. Can't disagree. I suppose it depends on the audience to whom the trailer is played. I was told that one of the benefits of senior membership was that one could dance naked round a may pole on Seven Dials. However, the police constable who arrested me obviously wasn't up to speed.

paul26 - two things, first of all, your commitment to amateur productions is phenomenal and it gladdens my heart to read about it, but a plea from me, review what you see on here. Maybe it can't influence box office, but it will tell us what works and what doesn't. Secondly, there is a promising production of My Fair Lady at Theatr Clwyd, Mold in September. The venue is a bit off the beaten track, but Tip Top Productions is an established company giving reign to young blood directing. www.theatrclwyd.com/en/whats-on/my-fair-lady/

Do we think this has a shot at transferring? I'm hoping I can be lazy and catch it in London rather than trekking to Manchester next week (although I've never been so actually it would probably be really enjoyable!) It's not actually a Hope Mill production. It's a new company "Northern Ricochet Productions", so I guess it's a matter of them having the resources or an additional producer to transfer it. Give yourself a day out in sunny Manchester!!

Even if you don't know or like the Jerry Springer brand, you can sit through this show for the sheer talent on stage. Yes, it's barmy/crude/rude/non PC but for me, that's part of the fun of the show. But the presentation and the performers will knock your socks off. A great revival.

Personally I don't think you can beat a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie with mushy peas, followed by a butterscotch Angel Delight - all washed down with a nice glass of Vimto. There is much to admire in your menu tmesis. As long as the Fray Bentos pie has rough puff pastry. I do like a bit of rough puff.
