Danieljohnson14 - you confuse me in this post! At one point you tell snutte he/she can call you what they like, then you tell us you punched someone in the face for calling you "bitch"!!!!
Is the location of the calling important? We need to know!!

It seems appropriate to want to see Hugh Jackman in The Boy from Oz - just once before I go.
Great fun topic Danieljohnson14

Well, what is the world to call us, if we can't agree what we want to be called? I use the wider "we", because this board is clearly a cross section of people. Earlier in this conversation cmonfeet asked "Is there hate in their hearts when they say it?" That for me cuts to the heart of the matter. Call me a queer one way and I'll laugh, call me a queer in another way and I'll take your face off. Same with the word "gay". As people who appreciate theatre and therefore I'm sure words, we know the power of interpreting words. How many plays have we seen where our perception has been changed because of the way words are used. There are hundreds of interpretations of the simple line from Lady Bracknell in "....Earnest" for example. "A handbag" are the words, how they are vocalised is the meaning. There is of course a perfectly good word in the lexicon for one who is attracted the same sex - it is homosexual.

I blame Freddie Laker for all this shenanagins. Paying for drinks et al. When I fly BOAC on the Empire route, the steward Is always so polite and 'umble especially when the Yorkshire puddings don't rise.

Publicly, I am boycotting the new version, but of course I'll have a look!!! The three magic ingredients have gone though, Mary with Paul was good symmetry and of course Mel and Sue were an excellent combination. It will be interesting to see if Noel and Sandi can find that sense of mischief. Will Prue Leith have symmetry with Paul? I can't see it because when she has been a judge on other things, she is quite abrasive. Of course it will be more important than ever to have a group of engaging cooks. Oh, it's all to play for!!!!

The comedic talent she showed as Fanny Brice leads me to believe she would be a belting Dolly Levi.

Finally got to see Funny Girl last night and enjoyed the show. As so many have said, Sheridan Smith is worth the ticket price alone, but for me once you've said that you have said it all. Some great songs in there, the storyline is just paper thin though. The staging is good both dsign and what's on it. Some engaging comedy, but stage corpses which were just a bit too obvious. See Crabtree's posting above. Unlike some, I have a problem with Darius Danesh or Campbell. I thought he lacked stage presence and on the evidence of last nights offering, he seemed to text his performance in.

A great album and 3 strong singles so far. Cant wait for the tour and to see Lee up close hopefully in lots of tight outfits! As long as it's not "H", I'd rather see him in an all in one burka.

I'm not playing devils advocate here, I am genuinely interested to read your opinions - Given that John Wilson has created such a niche for himself and his orchestra and can and has created so many magical evenings with his music, do people feel he is playing "second fiddle" (pun intended!)when the performance is semi-staged like this?

ptetty white cast hey? Maybe one mixed race guy in the emsemble...apart from that.... Even the guy playing the Persian was white doing a terrible mel Brooke's voice. Same problems as in half a sixpence, why would the director cast in the same way after that backlash? We are in 2017 right? Man playing curly beautiful voice, one of the best I've heard for a long time....terrible actor. Goodnight Wrong, look again, there was a black actor in the company.

A great lady of musical theatre. I am sad that her passing has not warranted a mention on the BBC news website.

All four I have seen are superb and, as has been said have an Alan Bennett, Talking Heads vibe. Truly wonderful.

Yes, like BurlyBeaR, I'm finding it difficult to understand why. I guess timing is every thing. Perhaps they think they have enough public profile to be listened to. I dunno.
As for where you were on that fateful day, My then partner and I were on the Greek Island of Andros. I was on the balcony having an early morning ciggie and coffee when a local man came and in his broken English told me how sorry he was about the English Princess. We went to the tour rep's office to hear the whole sorry story. For the funeral, we went to stay with our friends in Athens and watched it all on Greek TV. We missed all the public outcry about the Queen's response (or lack) so all that was a surprise for later. Infofreako is so right to point out the step change which this country went through in terms of public emotion. The Royal Family were not accustomed to or used to such displays and for what it's worth, I still think the Queen was right to keep hidden away in Balmoral and concentrate on the welfare of the Princes at that devastating time, rather than appease the feelings of Denise from Daventry who bought a bunch of Tesco flowers to The Mall.

This whole business is a spiteful attack on the BBC by the tory government in the hope of whipping up anti beeb support in advance of the Royal Charter negotiations.
I would suggest we know the salaries of ITV/CH4/SKY people as well, because we all pay for them by paying for products advertised on their channels.

I recently invested a few shillings into a play via crowdfunding. The subject of the play was one I identified and the producer had a track record. Those are the elements I would look for if I were to consider investing again. I must stress though, my investment was very small.

How wonderful. I didn't realise the Hope Mill was set up so recently - only know about it from posts via BurlyBear not having ever visited Manc. Looking forward to seeing Yanks on Saturday. Oh do try to visit. It's a magical little place. Perhaps come see "Pippin" and we can have a Manchester get together. I hope you enjoy "Yank!" on Saturday.

I thought I'd share this lovely news from Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre. I can't think of many theatre owners marrying each other in their own venue! www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-40529890Congratulations to William and Joseph!

Just an observation, but BurlyBeaR asked about The First Lady of British Musical Theatre. So how come the names of Gary Barlow, Michaels Ball and Crawford are mentioned. Have I missed summat???
I would suggest that on any measure, Ms Paige would be generally regarded as the first lady of British MT. Her profile beyond MT would mean she is so widely recognised. For sure Imelda Staunton and Sheridan Smith are up there with the wider public, but I'm not sure they would identify them as MT stars, they are eclipsed by their general acting careers.
Let's not forget Dames Julie Andrews and Angela Lansbury.

Free taxi to the port for anyone cracking a particularly bad joke. I went to the doctor last week, he told me what was wrong, I said, I don't believe you, I want a second opinion. The doctor said alright, your bloody ugly as well. Send the cab, I'm on me way!!!!

So Lee Mead AND Collabro. Now where's me waterwings? BurlyBeaR are we going to share a stateroom? Oh yeh.... then we get on board and you disappear with some "theatrical" type for the duration like Alison Steadman in Shirley Valentine! I don't think so! Anyway I like my own room on holiday. Keeps the options open! Excuse moi ! I'm the one likely to be left talking to the rock...... But the idea of Theatreboard cruises appeals. We could start small maybe hire the Mersey Ferry with a medley from "Blood Brothers".

Lee Mead might hang about on deck in the daytime in his short-shorts and "thick" legs 😋 And being taken up the Fjords? Where do I book?

It's staggering that in these days of cut backs everywhere, not just the arts and public services, the government can find £1 BILLION pounds to save their necks in parliament.
