I think if the BBC wanted it, it'd be on BBC Four, I doubt BBC Two would want it either given how atrocious the ratings were for the ITV highlights in primetime, same with BBC One. Theatre will always be a niche pastime and will never attract a big audience and surprised ITV even do this, as live filming or quickly edited is very expensive. I have never been to any awards ceremony, or watch anything on television, internet or radio, don’t want to come across as snooty as I am certainly not, but the theatre I want to remember is just that in a theatre, not on some arena stage not designed for the production and a sound rig designed for multiple shows. Yes I check who won what out of curiosity and it might nudge me to see something again.
Interesting, isn't it. We hear reports of how many millions theatres are raking in in sales, and we probably move in circles and read certain media where theatre is very important and has vast cultural capital. But when contextualise with the UK population as a whole, one realises our interest really is soberingly "niche"

I knew Sharon would sneak in and steal that award, Rosalie and Adrienne were robbed however Sharon was brilliant in the show so you can't be too mad at it.
For me Sharon's performance was on a whole other level to Rosalie.
Totally agree. Many people could have played Rosalies role... only someone of Sharon’s talent could play her role. This is no fault of Rosalies- her character was hardly a tour de force role- she had to mainly react to the other characters.

Ratings were about 690k. Skewed old and ABC1.

Some thoughts. Quite. Right. Too. Also Patti (looking gorgeous btw) & Jonny B were absolutely well deserved. Strangely I've had dreams like this though. No wonder La LuPone looks like the cat who got the cream. Also: I love it when Beverley Knight pulls out the 'fro. Adrienne Warren must be fuming this morning. Patti's son is a real cutie pie. Dame Katherine Parkinson was robbed. As you were.

Ratings were about 690k. Skewed old and ABC1. Probably because the general public have been conditioned into disengaging from anything vaguely intelligent or culturally rich. Unsurprisingly this got no mention or coverage on Lorraine on ITV in the “Showbiz” section 12 hours later. Perhaps if they’d bothered to mention this once or twice before the awards and then followed it up today they might have gained some interest and bigger traction. Broadcasting just the awards proper and then disregarding it immediately afterwards seems counterproductive to me.

The Olivier Awards are intelligent and/or culturally rich...?

I concur that Dame Katherine was robbed. But what a frock. Good work.
I've also had dreams like the one @ryan mentions.

I have a feeling this was the last year of ITV's contract.

Every single woman in the Best Actress (play) category did a great job, but no one was robbed, because the rightful winner did receive the award, and if I have to make my case with my fists in the car park under the National, then so be it, I'm seeing Downstate in a couple of weeks and could probably pencil in a few bouts of fisticuffs beforehand.

The Olivier Awards are intelligent and/or culturally rich...? Trying to be productive here. Compared to the rest of the dirge ITV usually outputs, yes. Unless you find yourself engaged and mentally stimulated by the “my fiancé is selling herself for cash”-type content of Jeremy Kyle or the best way to slice your toast discussions of Aemonn Holmes etc that is.

I feel like you've got a stereotypical idea of ITV's output that is ignoring everything that doesn't fit into your narrow idea of anti-intellectual/culturally destitute, whether on purpose to make an exaggerated point or accidentally because you're genuinely unaware, but ITV are just as likely to churn out a prestige drama as the BBC, and the BBC has its fair share of unscripted fluff and/or petty squabbling too. (Hell, maybe Jeremy Kyle should take over Newsnight for a bit...)

I for one would watch Newsnight if Jezza Kyle took over.
And yes, there's a fairly outdated notion that 'ITV' is a synonym for 'lesser quality' when in fact they have more than their fair share of quality drama (yes I record them to skip the ads but so what) and comedy outputs. Not to mention quality documentaries and the like.

I. Am. In. Love.
Also this is tangental but I want a reward for not nipping in her dressing room and stealing her frocks at the Duke of Yorks the other week.

Piffle. I'll fight dirty if necessary, I don't care. And the most important thing really is that I have "right" on my side because . . . well I always do. 'nuff said.

Brought back memories: we didn’t make it onto the Jeremy Kyle show at the time, but my fiancée used to sell herself for a bag of mini cheddars and an Um Bongo just before church. And I could slice toasted sourdough with a rusty penknife. Still, at least we ate. Enjoyed the Oliviers, despite the glitches and cuts that have been mentioned, and it being stuck at the sphinctal end of the schedules - although I get that. I was only mildly intrigued by “Six” previously but I’m now keen to see it: but perhaps not one of the “sing-along performances”. And Sharon D Clarke’s performance: wow: as ever! A well-deserved win for her.

Being free to have an opinion =/= being free to not have people call you out on your opinion when they disagree with it.

I have to say that I was surprised it wasn't live somewhere on the TV. With BBC ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all having multitudes of channels these days I was hoping this niche might have been catered for. Mind you on reflection, I've worked in Central London for over 20 years and many born and bred Londoners I've worked with have no idea where the National Theatre is. Usually when you say that grey building at the South End of Waterloo Bridge that looks like a car park, they often know it by sight ! I knew I was different but wasn't aware I was quite so niche !

Being free to have an opinion =/= being free to not have people call you out on your opinion when they disagree with it. Its fine to have an opinion but too many people on here are far too quick to post bile and anger aimed at specific posters when that said someone posts an opinion they dont agree with. We appear to have lost the art of debate in the social media age.

Just to add to the ITV debate, earlier this year it launched a new magazine that is only available via Waitrose.

EXACTLY. Looking down one's nose at ITV, is an argument as stale as "my mummy wouldn't allow me to watch Tiswas!"

I don't know how popular an opinion this is, but I would also of loved to see Home, I'm Darling take Costume Design too. Because not just Katharine's outfits, but also Siobhan Harrison's were beautiful, and they stood out to me. It would of been lovely to see those recognised.

I am very sad for Rosalie I don't want to say my 2019 is ruined but I don't think she's too bothered to be honest. She does go home to Studly Fraser every night so, you know, every cloud and all that.

I thought Rosalie totally over-egged that performance last night. I saw the show twice and neither time did she perform Being Alive like that. Presumably she was told to go ‘bigger’ for the RAH but that’s not necessarily right for tv. It all looked a bit cliched and, dare I say, desperate.

Best Actress in a Musical was by far the strongest catagory of the year and any which way it went, the actress would of been deserving or at least those who weren't happy would of understood why that specific person would of won. I was in the Rosalie camp but watching Adrienne and Sharon's performances I was like damn, OK anyone can win. But I knew Sharon would win, I had that feeling a few weeks ago that it just seemed obvious so I wasn't surprised not dissapointed, as she was brilliant and the best part of that show, by a mile.
