Oy! The fact that I don't like Jaffa "Cakes", Chocolate Hobnobs, and any other fancy biscuits is beside the point, but if there's to be any careless talk about an official cake, please let it be an actual cake and not a pappy biscuit masquerading as such. And no bland c**p like Victoria Sandwich, either, which is so boring that I wouldn't eat it if paid to do so. (Says she, rewarding herself with home-made Pear & Cardamom Cake, having more than earned it after emerging victorious from the annual online battle with self-assessment.)

A Jaffa cake is a cake. Just because it's placed in the biscuit aisle doesn't take away the fact it's made of sponge and goes hard when it goes stale.

Well no, 'cos anyone among us who is actually a biscuit in disguise will find that they go soft when they get stale.

Query, are we the first discussion board ever to have accidentally adopted an official cake? Tonight's dinner menu on the cruise ship has "Opera cake" listed in the dessert section. Maybe I could find out what it is & then the board could tweak the recipe a bit & make a "Theatre cake"! On the train from Rostock back to Warnemunde after looking at rather too many buildings in Rostock. Footsore. And my suggestion to stop for cake got turned down.

Now there's an idea, Baemax - let them go stale and use for trifle... mmm!

You could all-too-briefly buy Mocha flavoured Kit-Kats. Which were heavenly. We have a strange Green one from I think China stuck on a noticeboard in work...nobdoy dares ask why.
Anyway I had my hair cut this afternoon. And I now no longer resemble the love child of Sue Perkins and Justin Beiber.

I don't like sultanas or raisins. Can they be picked out of the cookies? I do that with hot cross buns. (I don't eat fruit cake as by the time I'd removed the dried fruit there isn't much point!) I made enquiries about opera cake & apparently it's mocha & chocolate. As I don't like either I think I'll have to abandon the recipe modification idea. Leaving Warnemunde shortly & tomorrow is at sea. By the time I get internet again in Helsinki on Friday I'm expecting the board to have caused a temporary closure of M&S due to a run on biscuits, at the rate this is going! I have done 2 days of sightseeing in weather that was under 20 degrees & cloudy almost the entire time, with showers, yet still I have managed to catch the sun on my parting, which has gone bright pink (everywhere else was sun creamed just in case). I'm so bad with sun I think I must be part vampire!

Just back from Budapest.
It's f**king brilliant!
Yes it was hot (average 34c) but not debilitatingly so. It's a really beautiful city with a distinct character, but if you've never been, it's a bit like a cross between Prague and Vienna. We were staying on the Buda side but only 2 minutes walk from the Chain Bridge so you could walk into Pest in 12 minutes. It's great for tube/trams (v. cheap) excellent museums, galleries, thermal baths.
The people were lovely with great friendliness and charm and very eager to help.
Food and drinks excellent and cheap, particularly on the Buda side. We had the enevitable goulash, which was better than I've had in Prague, but also an unusual, but tasty, sheeps cheese gnocchi, garnished with crispy bacon. Great Hungarian beers and wines but also one of the best Aperol spritz I've had (must confess I had four!) and only £3. Try getting one at that price in Covent Garden.
We also met an American called Dennis Thatcher who was very proud to have the name of the husband of one our most reviled former Prime Ministers. 'Say are you from the UK? Guess my name. Think before Tony Blair....' and then bizarrely: 'Were you in ''The Full Monty''?' I wonder which bit of me he thought he remembered from the film?

Basically the reason why I find summer holidays here in my own country so pointless.

If we're having an official biscuit, I must insist that it is an actual biscuit and not a cookie. (Watch me use my everyday pedantry to sow the seeds of declaring an official TheatreBoard cake, biscuit, *and* cookie.)

Watch me use my everyday pedantry to sow the seeds of declaring an official TheatreBoard cake, biscuit, *and* cookie I can't imagine anyone having a problem with that. Seems entirely reasonable. But if we get to the point of discussing our official potato we should probably stop.

I lost my keys this morning. I know they are inside the house. The question is, where? I hate this feeling. Not a very good start to the day I suppose.

I lost my keys this morning. I know they are inside the house. Have you got your glasses on glasses ? I hope you are also inside the house or you really would be in trouble. I am here annoying you all due to trawling Checkatrade for electricians and fencers. I cannot find anyone who wants work. The deer are getting in and the dog is getting out. The towels are staying soggy. Every time I find a decent tradesman they have disappeared off the face of the earth (probably to Marbella with the money I've paid them) when I need them again.

Yes, I am wearing my glasses at the moment:D (I have glasses -10 for my left eye and -12 for my right eye, without them I may as well be blind) And to your second question, yes I am also in the house. Wouldn't be good if I weren't. Such a shame that no one want to work. Here in The Netherlands there's a period going on called 'bouwvak', which is a holiday for people working in construction, contractors and all that. Is there something like that in the UK? If so, that could explain why it is so hard to find people at the moment.

I've been informed by another academic that the reason she's treated better (in a pastoral/general decent human being way) is simply because she's better than me. Riiiiiiigggght Love. I'm a firm believer in Karma biting you in the arse so maybe that better treatment has an expiry date.

I see your sultana cookies and raise you the M&S pistachio ones (allergy alert of course)... I'm also having the same Checkatrade problem - apparently not a single plumber in London wants work!
