People are always talking about how (decent) new British musicals are few and far between.While it is the case that on the West End you'll hardly ever get a new British musical, there are lots of people trying and putting their stuff on in smaller fringe and off-west end theatres. So what are the best brand new musicals you've ever seen in fringe or off-West End venues? And did any of them have the potential to get to the West End and be at least moderately successful?

I haven't seen it, but I really like the concept and the cast recording of Ushers: the front of house musical

Another vote for the Clockmaker's Daughter, I thought it was a great show and definitely had the potential to be a success.

I think the problem isn't that new British musicals aren't good - they just aren't west end good and there is a world of difference. I don't think it helps that many don't get a commercial release in terms of a cast recording, so the musical dies after the production and falls into obscurity. Yeah, I wish they'd make more cast recordings of those smaller shows. One of the only ones I can think of that did was Ushers |
