Given all the above (and all the emails) I was almost amused at the number of people two-and-fro ing out of the theatre (presumably for the toilet) when it was decreed that nobody shalt move or breathe lest they disturb the precious 'art' on stage.
I actually think all of that made me really resentful towards the show and far more harsh in my opinion of it!

^Given the stories I've read about Scott Rudin, I wouldn't want to make him angry. One day someone'll have to get Tim Minchin drunk enough to hold forth on his Groundhog Day experience with him. He's dropped a few hints...

Apparently paying $5 prevents them being disruptive. I wonder how that works. I did ask about that but the House Manager was less than forthcoming.... she also backed me up against a wall and shouted at me, which is obviously charming behaviour

Look it's not that kind of show* Also don't make me tell the story of squeezing in a lift with another actor.... *it clearly was. Any excuse for me to post the greatest picture on the internet. I have a lift story also. I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours. Mine was at the Barbican years ago, maybe even before QI. Alan Davies walks into a full lift. I recognise him but couldn't think of his name. You're... you're erm. And he was willing me to recognise him. Rolling his his eyes in that come on way with the circular hand motion. 'You're not funny' I just blerted out. He didn't think it funny. The lift was in hysterics, rolling around on our backs like the 'release Roderick' scene

Just came on here to talk about that. How pigheaded of those audience members to ruin the show like that. If I was onstage at that point I would have got down and taken the phone physically, then tossed it into the wings. It's not fair on fellow audience members or the actors. Some of the replies to Niall's tweets are downright rude as well - "1. 'don't come back to the theatre?' Niall what are you saying? that's YOUR audience you're talking to. Theatre clearly needs to be more exciting than England taking penalties"No, we don't WANT people like that in the audience. The fewer of them around, the better. I saw Niall's original tweet but I just caught up on some of the responses -omg! How can anyone think that's acceptable?!! Leave the theatre if it's that important. If I was sat anywhere near them I'd be raging.

Never call an EMO a Goth as they can get very upset. I once knew someone who tagged every photo at an EMO band CD signing as goth 1, goth 2 etc just to wind the EMOs up. Is that the line they cut from Nobody's Side?? Real LOL, brilliant!

I can’t believe some of the trolling the Titanic cast are getting on Twitter. Football fans are vile.

I can’t believe some of the trolling the Titanic cast are getting on Twitter. Football fans are vile. It's just awful. And a much more widespread opinion than I would've thought, so many people saying that the football was more important than the 'play' (um, it's a musical you morons). It just makes me angry. But also kinda grateful that theatre doesn't often attract too many of those sorts of people and that's totally fine by me, they can stay the hell away from it and leave it for the rest of us to enjoy

My favourite was the suggestion of having a break in the show while the penalties were being taken … um, hang on, guys, postpone the Titanic sinking for a few minutes for a penalty shoot out! At what point should someone in the wings signal a halt in proceedings and tell everyone to switch on their phones, I wonder? Then, when it's over, carry on sinking! Honestly!

And the utter arrogance of all the 'we pay your wages so shut up, we can do what we want' posts as well. Apparently because they paid for their tickets, they're allowed free reign to do whatever they want, no matter how disruptive or disrespectful that may be to the actors or the audience around them. They can all just stay away from our theatre world, they don't bloody deserve it

Those people made the concious decision to go to the show rather than stay at home and watch the match. You would of thought that if the football was that important they would have given up the theatre ticket. Overall it is as you say completely disrespectful to both the cast and other theatre goers. I wonder what these people would say if the situation was reversed or people turned up to a big event of theirs like a wedding and acted in a similar manner to how they behaved. I really do question the mentality of people sometimes. Manners and respect for others don’t cost anything.

What if it was even at a cinema? Surely they'd be irritated by this behavior at a crucial moment in a film? How they can defend it is beyond me.

It is all to do with the growing sense of entitlement that is ruining contemporary society.
What I want, What I feel, What I demand is all that matters. The impact on others is of no consequence.
Common courtesy and general good manners are dying out.

They are side by side with those who abuse people work in health, service industries, education etc. They pay so they think they own you, it’s the inevitable conclusion of a society that has promoted acquisition as being the ultimate gauge of success.

As I've said before if you want to watch football do that, if you've gone to see a show WATCH that, you cannot do both.
This Saturday's matinees will be interesting as England game will be from 3pm until around 4.50pm so ending will be the same as a lot of shows.
I've known people check scores but not watching it during a show.
I agree with the chap in the Titanic cast. It is an ensemble show so it's not like a big name berating someone.

The only way I can see this changing is if the people who do it are called out on it from the stage: the show is stopped, the person is singled out in front of everyone else and told that the performance will not continue until they either hand their phone to a member of staff or leave right now. Yes. it'll be disruptive for a while, but the only way this behaviour is going to change is if it's made socially unacceptable.

somehow now i hope England loses so they don’t completely go crazy and think football excuses everything I’ve been hoping they lose since the start. The quicker they are out the sooner everyone will shut up about the stupid game. Though now they are getting closer to the final I’m starting to change my mind a little. Probably better they lose right at the end as that will really upset all these football obsessed idiots.

As someone said above in this instance it's that they were actually watching the game. While I still think it's rude/unnecessary there's a difference between a sly glance at the score on your phone, to actively watching it instead of the show in front of you.
I had a quick scroll through the twitter responses yesterday- vile. I know some people think that people should be allowed to do what they want in theatre under the guise of being 'welcoming' I wonder does that extend to abuse of actors who speak up.
And I think it's true, that actors 'Doing a Patti' and stopping the show while disruptive to the audience, is in fact one of the few ways it gets noticed. And similarly, I work in 'customer service' but I have a line of rudeness I will not- and should not- tolerate when doing my job. So I support these actors speaking out.

I’ve never been to a show where the actor stopped and called out an audience member, but I’ve been to plenty where they would have been fully justified in doing so. It certainly wouldn’t bother me if they did, and I don’t believe they should carry on regardless in some form of “show of professionalism”.

Maybe we should. Maybe we should all sacrifice ourselves at the altar of Patti by using a phone at the wrong point, receiving her wrath, making the news, and thus spreading the word that mid-show phone use is never okay.

Maybe we can secretly arrange to have a performance where we ALL do it, like the best/worst Theatreboard meet up ever. We could even pre-warn Patti so she has a speech prepared. And pre warn the boys in the cast that @ryan is there.

Go for it people by all means but I wouldn't fancy any of your chances in getting out alive if you did. And those boys are rather a delicious bunch aren't they? It'll make sitting through that show just to get to Patti worthwhile.

Personally I think it'll be fun if they get Patti to do the "Turn off your phones" announcement at the beginning of the show.
