Those audience members definitely scored an own goal there last night. Absolutely shocking.

Meanwhile I had a bit of a row with a house manager at Boys in the Band because they banned all water bottles UNLESS you bought one of their $5 souvenir cups to put it in. [...] they thought water bottles were 'disruptive'. Apparently paying $5 prevents them being disruptive. I wonder how that works.

Minor in the grand scheme of things but audience members using a programme as a fan is annoying when it's in your eye line.

I'd like to see them try that during 'Company'.

I'd be getting my ticket refunded at that point, irregardless of how much I wanted to see it. I'd also be going wild on social media @ the production/venue etc. In no country should that be considered acceptable behavior, least of all from a House Manager, even in Trumps America.

I hope your mother wasn't with you. Seriously, that's dreadful. You should definitely kick up a stink about it on the socials medium. Glad you're back safe and sound though. I heard that Marianne Elliott paid for you to be fast tracked through the airport so that she could make sure that you left. That was nice of her.

I agree. In London's glitzy West End they can be a bit snippy but the worst you tend to get is a heavy sigh and a roll of the eyes in a fairly dramatic fashion.

In the West End I often think that the ushers (often being young drama students) as they check your tickets will go into their dance....5 6 7 8

Has anyone been yet to see Knights of the Rose or are planning to. I didn't understand what was so hysterically funny about the start of most of the songs in Act 1. I was in row H and it was noise from 2 and 3 rows behind me. I think it prompted other to join in it really ruined the atmosphere. It must have been really off putting for the actors as they would have clearly heard it. But at least no one sang along that was a blessing!!

Re: my charming House Manager situation, I have written an email to the theatre management but not received a reply. The security man was also incredibly rude.
I also got a load of abuse via email after I tweeted about it. Older readers may remember a charming dog-sitting client who told me if I really wanted it enough I'd move to London and live on the streets...she took issue with my water issue, not only via twitter but TWO emails at stupid O'Clock...that was a fun evening.
Luckily these were the only rude staff I encountered- in the spirit of karmic balance, a shout out to the toilet attendant at Angels who was the sweetest most charming lady who really entered into the spirit of 'we're all here all day'. Also all the front of House Staff at Atlantic Theatre and CSC were lovely (clearly off-Broadway is where the nice folks flock).
And yes @ryan both Marianne and Tony approved my week-long pass but not a moment more.

Just came on here to talk about that. How pigheaded of those audience members to ruin the show like that. If I was onstage at that point I would have got down and taken the phone physically, then tossed it into the wings. It's not fair on fellow audience members or the actors. Some of the replies to Niall's tweets are downright rude as well - "1. 'don't come back to the theatre?' Niall what are you saying? that's YOUR audience you're talking to. Theatre clearly needs to be more exciting than England taking penalties"No, we don't WANT people like that in the audience. The fewer of them around, the better.

Ugh that's appalling. I know there's a lot of hand-wringing and intelletualising done by some about making theatre 'welcoming' and not imposing 'rules' but honestly, in this case what's the point? if you'd rather be watching the football, go and watch the football. This isn't checking your phone in case the babysitter rang, it's ignoring the show in front of you in favour of something else. So I'm with the actors, respectfully f*** off and watch the football in the pub people.

I was playing in panto a couple of years ago and during the "he's behind you scene", there was a woman in the second row texting away, phone light shining on her face, and whist I didn't stop the show, at the end of the gag, just before the gorilla came to get me, I said "here am I facing mortal danger and that woman is texting for help, how kind". She, red face, audience applause!

They are not showing any respect for anyone else, performers or audience, so just f*** 'em, without respect!!!

All the more surprising to me because I always think of the United Sates as being capital of customer service. But I suppose when it comes to revenue generation, C.S comes a poor second. Hope you recovered quickly.

Never call an EMO a Goth as they can get very upset. I once knew someone who tagged every photo at an EMO band CD signing as goth 1, goth 2 etc just to wind the EMOs up. Is that the line they cut from Nobody's Side??

Side note, that theatre has THE most uncomfortable seating I've ever encountered.

Re: my charming House Manager situation, I have written an email to the theatre management but not received a reply. The security man was also incredibly rude. The ban on outside water bottles is a Scott Rudin thing. It's the policy at all of his shows, and the security people are very difficult about it. I'd rather they spent their energies policing people on their phones. I think I got three emails from Telecharge about water bottles before I saw Boys in the Band, and yet the woman next to me couldn't figure out how to turn off her phone as the play was starting and left it turned-on in her bag (luckily didn't go off), but a different phone went off 10 minutes before the end of the play.

Oh dear lord the emails!! I must have had 6 in the days leading up to it...Scott Rudin is a needy bitch isn't he?!! I would *just* about take 'no outside drink' as a security issue (as shouty woman on twitter tried to say) but "artistic" one is utter bollocks, I'm far more disturbed, as you say, by 10 people not turning off their phones/having a good old chat/going back and forth to the bar in the theatre, than I am someone taking a swig of drink to stave off a cough/dehydration. And yes, the security bloke was a first class dick. Other theatre security men/women managed to do their job while being polite or even, shock horror friendly so it clearly is just them. Rudin, you ain't special, get off your high horse.

Rudin is certainly something... but I've taken a lot of various drinks into Mormon and no one has ever stopped me. I don't know if it was like that early on in the run, though.

^Given the stories I've read about Scott Rudin, I wouldn't want to make him angry.

Meanwhile I had a bit of a row with a house manager at Boys in the Band because they banned all water bottles UNLESS you bought one of their $5 souvenir cups to put it in. Now normally I'd just mutter to myself, and play by the rules and bin it. But it was 100 degrees with health warnings about heat. My complaining got me nowhere but I felt a bit better about it. This was aparently an 'artistic' decision not a 'security' one because they thought water bottles were 'disruptive'. Now I worship Joe Mantello, but I have to tell him, my fainting or being sick due to the heat are likely far more disruptive than my drinking from a bottle...anyway rant over! I'm guessing they might've originally meant to ban the thinner ones that crinkle very easily. Did they specifically mean the souvenir cups? (Not being incredulous, just curious.) I brought in a reusable insulated water bottle and no one seemed to care (but one of the security guys recognized me from other shows and said hi, and clearly saw the bottle in my bag, in the middle of saying "no bottles" to anyone who would listen), so I'm not sure if that's how I got through. I also didn't get there until about 3 minutes to curtain, so maybe they decided I wasn't worth the trouble. Was the house manager the lady with short blond/gray hair?

They just said to me that you could only have drinks in the souvenir cups and that I was 'welcome' to take my own water if I bought one of them to put it in. Couldn't tell you if re-useable personal bottles were allowed (ironically any other day I would have tested that theory as I use mine religiously and this was the only day I'd forgotten it). And aye, that's the badger. Charming creature she was. Shouted at an elderly lady in front of me too.

She's certainly something! I've seen her at a lot of Shubert houses and certainly wouldn't want to get on her bad side. I always knew she'd go after anyone I tattled on, though.
