Oh good. This [Frozen closing] must be to make way for Martin Guerre.

Oh good. This must be to make way for Martin Guerre. I would be dumbfounded if they put Martin Guerre in Drury Lane. It’s Schoenberg’s best score but it’s got a tumultuous history to say the least. Do we know they’ve finished whatever version of rewrites they’re working on?

I love the show and know it is flawed, but even if it does get a fifth (?) life, I don't see it playing to more than 1000 people per night. In terms of the rewrites, last I'd heard was the common knowledge info that it was being workshopped at the OV with a view to a possible run this year. People on here with their finger on the pulse will surely know if/when MG will eventually return.

I could do without another west end musical where we all laugh at the camp limp wristed gay guy. Until representation improves I don't really want The Producers back personally.
Frozen has done incredibly well really. I'm sure it will tour eventually, probably after Aladdin has finished its tour and a suitable set from the US or Australia is available.
I'd love ther hercules rumour to be true. It has great potential as a stage musical

This isn’t going to Drury Lane 🤣 Mr B - where is Martin Guerre going? And do they already have the next show sorted that going to the Drury Lane? Thanks as always! My guess is AIDA. It was the intended theatre for a Broadway transfer of the original (which obviously never happened) and would be ideal for a show that size....and keep Disney on the property.

If it´s the awful new Schele Williams-directed Aida, it won´t last for a month!

If it´s the awful new Schele Williams-directed Aida, it won´t last for a month! According to a recent post, the show is being re-hauled after the recent, disastrous Netherlands production. Looks like the creative team know the changes were a misfire so lets hope they harken back to the original which was flawed but highly entertaining.

Interesting take. Thanks …and I don’t so much mean the Nazi stuff. I mean more the role of the women in the show, and the prehistoric Dick Emery style gay stereotypes. Painful. Was truly painful sitting through the most recent tour. The Nazi stuff was funny enough in context (though even that's outdated "teehee, Nazis silly") but it hardly opened doors for women or queer rep, let's put it that way...

I don’t feel uncomfortable with a Jew writing satire about Nazi’s. I do feel uncomfortable with the female lead being reduced to just a dumb blonde pair of breasts and 2 of the worst gay stereotypes ever committed to stage…in 2024.

I'd love ther hercules rumour to be true. It has great potential as a stage musical Hercules was tried out at Papermill Playhouse last year and a German production is opening in March this year in Hamburg. What rumours have you heard - potential of this coming to London? I’d love to see it done well - needs big sets and effects though which the German production seems to be aiming for (also being directed by Casey Nicholaw who also directed Aladdin). They interestingly describe it as the world premiere production so maybe Stage Entertainment have plans for a bigger life, if all goes well. www.hamburg.com/explore/musicals/17207678/hercules/

In my head though I always pictured it at the Prince Edward. That being said it's only marginally smaller seats wise.

Hopeful now for more productions of this in the future if they get it right.

I seem to have stumbled down a weird Twitter black hole of people hoping that Beetlejuice will come to Drury Lane. Beetlejuice in that old barn of a theatre?!
Surely whatever they have lined up will be another mainstream crowd pleaser.

Theatre fans on Twitter putting out all sorts of stupid names for shows to go in here just proves how little they actually know...

The sequel is being released in the autumn so I suppose it's not such a stupid idea. But drury Lane still seems a bit ambitious for beetlejuice.

‘Witches of Eastwick’ seemed a bit ambitious for TRDL and that ran for (a)month(s). Folks love to throw money down big holes to have their names on them. Don’t rule BJ out. I’d heard the Dominion initially which is why I wouldn’t rule out another barn.

The restoration of Drury Lane has allowed it to have flexible staging so I'd love to see something go in that's either in-the-round or on a thrust stage. If the Oliver! rumour from Chichester is true, then maybe that could be a contender...or possibly even the Leeds Playhouse production seeing as it sounds like people would rather see that!
...or failing that... BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE!

The only one that’s been mentioned so far that excites me is Oliver as I’ve never seen that in the West End. And didn’t it run at TRDL when it was revived following I’d Do Anything?

A list of recent ish! productions from Theatre Royal:
A Chorus Line (1976–1979) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1980) The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1981–1983) 42nd Street (1984–1989) Miss Saigon (1989–1999) The Witches of Eastwick (2001) My Fair Lady (revival) (2001–2003) Anything Goes (revival) (2003–2004) The Producers (2004–2007)[96] The Lord of the Rings: The Musical (2007–2008)[97] Oliver! (revival) (2009–2011)[98] Shrek The Musical (2011–2013)[99] Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013–2017)[100] 42nd Street (revival) (2017–2019)[102] Frozen (2021–2024)
Oliver would eb a good fit as a theatre this size needs something appealing to a mass audience .We will have to wait !

Witches was a bit unlucky - I think it was originally pencilled in for the Prince Edward, but when Mamma Mia unexpectedly took off it got shifted to Drury Lane which was to its detriment (well, that and the fact Ian McShane was decidedly lacklustre). Even reducing the seating capacity didn’t help. Bearing in mind both Broadway runs of BJ lost money I still think TRDL would be a bit too risky - surely the Dominion would be cheaper if nothing else….

You are correct and not only was WITCHES OF EASTWICK planned for the Prince Edward, they had Michael Crawford on board as Darryl. Once MAMMA MIA scuppered those plans and delayed the production which had to find another theatre, they lost Crawford due to prior commitments. I love the score from that show but so wish they could fix the book/tone and make it less hokey. The concert production a year or two ago at The Queens was absolutely thrilling.

The Greatest Showman - being produced by Disney. They were eyeing up Broadway for end of the year. I wonder if their plan has changed and they’re looking to open in London instead?
