Great news I guess, but with Divina?! She wasn't exactly amazing in Chicago recently.

ooohhh. I wonder if it will come to London at Southwark? Things have transferred from the Hope Mill to SWP before but has anything transferred from Leeds Playhouse or HOME? This is presumably going to be in the Courtyard space at Leeds Playhouse rather than the Quarry because the latter would be a very different proposition to HOME in terms of size and type of space. Isn’t it nice that this is happening in the North? 😌😀

Great news I guess, but with Divina?! She wasn't exactly amazing in Chicago recently. Oh dear…. Do tell us more! She could act it acceptably but the vocals for Mary Sunshine were well shaky, and I saw her twice (in the same week) so either she was poorly, or just not very good. It was all falsetto though so maybe she's better in a lower range?

I think she'll need some serious vocal and acting coaching to give this the respect it deserves and not turn it into some dreadful Drag Race 'acting challenge'.

Hmm. Not sure she is talented enough for this monumental role. The actor needs to be exceptional.

John McCrea would be a knockout.

Been wanting to see this for years, but for me I think the casting has put me off it. Loved Divina on drag race but bot sure about in Hedwig. I wasn't personally that impressed on the "skit" she did with the 9 to 5 Cast on this years Children in Need (Can be found on YT)

Divina is in panto near me which I've just had a press invite for...I know they're very different acting styles but I'll see how she does in that before committing to Hedwig!

I’ve wanted to see this show for so long that I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I have faith that DDC will be decent in the role, out of the amount of queens who could have played this role she’s one of the few that I think could do it.
Worst case scenario she isn’t very good and I’ll eagerly await the next revival. Best scare scenario is she’s great and I’ll eagerly await the next revival.

Although im hoping with a longer rehearsal period that Hedwig will be better. Either way, I'm just glad there will be a production, although I always hoped the Menier would put this on at some point.

Isn’t it a bit odd though, that this musical which has reached cult status and that people have been waiting for a revival of for 15 years, one that we have speculated about on this very website on and off since we started, and which completely exploits the zeitgeist of the trans struggle eventually comes into existence in such a low key way? Ok Divina is “known” from drag race but it’s not exactly Neil Patrick Harris or Darren Criss is it? And the director Jamie Fletcher I’ve read their bio and can’t find anything of note they they’ve actually directed (please correct me if that’s doing them a disservice).
As much as I love that this is happening oop north I can’t help wondering WHY it’s happening oop north!

Divina doesn’t describe herself as trans though.

Divina doesn’t describe herself as trans though. Cis does not automatically mean “not trans”.

I really struggle with the casting decisions for Hedwig as a role. As much as Hedwig is a trans role, their transition is not a trans journey as such, but more on of necessity to leave east Berlin and move to the USA. I think John Cameron Mitchell refers to Hedwig as a genderqueer character and not trans.
I have trans friends who I have discussed this with who have no issue with any gender playing Hedwig, as their story in the play isn't representational of the trans community.
Personally I'd be happy for anyone to play the role as long as they do justice to the character and the piece.
