£97.50 for Matilda in Manchester! And more seats at that price than in the West End!

Especially re Spamalot, the simple answer is because they think they can get away with it. They don't want their cheap productions to be seen as cheap, so they charge the same or nearly the same price as the competition. It's a dangerous path to tread because there will be people who pay £50 to go and watch Spamalot and think "this is crap" who then won't pay £50 to see anything else there ever again because they'll assume that Spamalot is the quality level.

Apparently panto was a 3 year contract, so assuming that's true, The King & I will probably be a limited run, unless they've made a settlement with Qdos to take the panto elsewhere/not do it.

Does anyone know what is the maximum size bag that can be taken into the auditorium? I can't find anything on the website. couldn't say for certain, but the general rule of thumb tends to be that anything bigger than a "normal" sized rucksack that you'd use day to day, goes in the cloakroom.

Tim Minchin said in The Guardian Facebook live interview the other day (with him and Dennis Kelly about Matilda) that he has had the movie/book "Stardust" as an idea for a musical. I think it would be pretty great to see, especially as Matilda and Groundhog Day are both incredible. ...featuring the music of Take That?

If the Lord is happy with the 3D race segments in the Kenwright version, then that's a crying shame. Starlight needs a 30th anniversary celebration at the O2. Fully staged, racetracks and all. Give it what it deserves. Totally agree the 02 would be perfect for a anniversary performance. In our production next month we are building a racetrack around the stalls and doing the races live without any video or projection. RUG are coming to watch and may just prove to them in the right venue where the seating can be removed or arranged bespoke that live racing could be done! Sounds really great, good for you guys for presenting it in the best way that you can. The problem with Kenwright shows is that everything is as cheap as possible (I'm not necessarily criticising cheap productions here, they keep ticket prices lower and that's needed), so I really can't see him investing the time money and effort in having to bespokely design racetracks for every venue, when in his mind I'm sure the 3D sequences are perfectly adequate. Equally, he is renowned for being super tight when it comes to seating and capacities. For example restricting concessions and staff deals even when shows are empty (from personal experience, 300 seats out of 1800 sold for Evita and he wouldn't even give staff a discount), so I'd be massively surprised if, additional costs aside, he gave the go-ahead to remove seats (that may or may not sell) in order to add a racetrack that he most likely deems unnecessary. Sorry to rant.

I remember this discussion happening a while ago and I think the concensus was that it's actually a conscious choice by the production to finish in that anticlimactic way, to steal Effie's thunder as it were. So even after she's absolutely smashed her number...we're gonna end with the "new" Dreams.

any news on the cast change? As soon as there's news, I'm sure it'll be posted in this thread within about a nanosecond.

Yes the original Wicked and Lion King tours were pencilled in years in advance, same with Matilda. Even though it never happened Les Mis was pencilled in for its 30th anniversary tour quite far in advanceLes Mis seemed to keep slipping, but it looks like it will finally happen in the next couple of years. More like a 35th anniversary tour!

I know lots of Take That fans and they are booked to go back again and again and again.... its like the concerts, it becomes a competition on who is going the most! What's your tally, Shady?

Bit early for Disney to be planning the West End production before Broadway has even opened You'd be surprised! Many producers plan early, to get the venues they want. Disney even has regional venues already booked into 2021 for one of their tours.

I wonder if ALW will do what Cameron does in his theatres and have continental seating in the stalls? What is continental seating? Does it come with a croissant? If only! It's when there's no central aisle(s), seats stretch right the way across in one continuous block. Sometimes the entire stalls will be like this (ala most playhouses, or the New Wimbledon for an example of a larger house, or sometimes it'll be just the first few rows e.g. Birmingham Hippodrome, Prince Edward theatre amongst others, or sometimes the entire first block of the Stalls, such as the redesigned Victoria Palace

Started about 5 minutes late TallPaul. As a show, it was just so poor. There was absolutely zero energy coming from the stage. And Flashdance should ooze energy. The music didn't sound beefy enough, the set design was dire, the lighting design was like being at a school disco, endless sound issues. No sound from the mics for the first song. I think Joanne Clifton has a good voice in there somewhere. I could hear potential, but she sounded ropey in this. Pitchey. Lead guy also poor. General dire diction as a cast overall, couldn't hear half of what they were saying. Most awkward moment was during I Love Rock & Roll when the four or so cast members on stage were doing the whole "clap along with me" thing...no-one clapped along. Sadly a typical Selladoor production...cheap cheap cheap.

Something that they could very easily do, not to forgive their shortcomings but as more of a customer service measure, would be to offer all affected customers presale links fo the next booking period. Just as a way of doing something for the people they've messed around.

I got 22 December as my new date, but tickets have gone from Side O in stalls to side K in the Royal, which is a considerable downgrade even if it's the same price band. I fired off a complaint to Ticketmaster - not that it will make any difference, but I'm all for creating extra work for the f***ers. Quite willing to direct a complain to DMT or CamMac directly if there's a contact address around. Sir Cameron Mackintosh 1 Bedford Square London WC1B 3RB

Will try to post some more constructive feedback when I've got home and recovered with a large gin.

Just booked my third trip. Not bad for a show that I didn't really fancy seeing initially but the amazing word of mouth on here as well as really useful ticket buying info persuaded me to book. I was the same Shady - initially booked a £15 ticket thinking "probably won't be my thing"...I'm now three visits in and plotting a fourth!

If anyone ever has a spare couple of hours, the Drury Lane tour is absolutely fascinating.
For those who are interested, this video shows what the substage Victorian "bridges" can do. There's four of them in total.
