Fundamentally a lot of the UK still enjoy entertainment that is non PC - and a lot of the group see banning it as an attack o their views and lifestyle. Things have to be done delicately or the culture war will grow bigger and bigger.

Fans are in situ at Crucible as we speak. I'll check ITV racing at 1:30pm for Goodwood update. I believe fans will stay at the Crucible today but be banned tommrow. The goodwood trial for tommrow is cancelled.

Guess we know what the official government view is.

The R rate would rise markedly if schools fully reopen, not just because of asymptomatic transmission being taken into homes but because of how the impact of that drives general mobility and mixing. they would have to reverse all of the leisure openings to get anywhere near. So, it would be an ‘all work, no play’ lockdown, I guess that’s not going to go down well for the millions who don’t have school age children. And with bogeymen already being found by the government and their allies things could get toxic.

Is it clear if you have to wear a mask in the foyer but can take it off once in your seat in the cinema? That old conundrum of wearing glasses means I wouldn't be able to see the screen! I doubt the government even know the answer yet.
From that it doesn't feel likely theatre without distancing is coming anytime soon

Will be interesting to see if people are willing to go to the cinema while wearing a mask.

Racial tensions are not perfect in many of the areas affected and this talk will only make things worse.
Any proof to back up your claim that "Racial tensions are not perfect in many of the areas affected"? I mean Racial relations - it's known that places like Oldham and Bradford still have issues in this area despite noticeable improvements - Dog whistling has a certain level of appeal there.

I suspect the usual suspects in the press are now driving around the North aiming to catch a mosque not enforcing social distancing.

Won't banning people meeting in their homes just lead to much fuller pubs, thus defeating the entire point? Possibly. It also says something about this government's - how can I put this? - cultural sensitivity that they announced this measure about two hours before the beginning of Eid. I'm not suggesting additional measures of some kind are not required, but this really doesn't seem to have been thought through at all. And - re: Eid - the numbers have been tracking the same way for long enough that it would have been considerate to give the many, many families in the region planning celebrations a little more notice that their plans might have to change. Suspect the government has panicked that it might get attacked on the right for not cracking down before EID.

Matt Hancock pinpointing the cause of spikes in Lancashire and West Yorkshire as people meeting in houses and definitely not in shops or pubs has set my dog off barking uncontrollably for some reason. The only people that I see wearing masks around here (I’m in one of those lockdown tightening areas) are from the muslim community - taxi drivers, food establishments etc. All their customers, nothing, Yet again, public facing workers paying the price for those who can’t be bothered. The government would do better by mandating people to wear masks instead of trusting their ‘common sense’, rather than blaming the workers who are being put in danger by them. I've noticed that here in London Hijab wearing Muslim women were one of the first groups to be widely seen wearing masks in shops and on Public Transport. I know from a neighbours who keeps getting taxi's to go shopping that all drivers seem to be wearing them now - haven't looked in the takeaways recently but they mostly have screens up so not sure if the staff need to wear masks.
Shop workers need to be mandated to wear masks - I went to Oxford Street today and only in the Disney Store was every member of staff wearing a mask - I can understand not on the till if a screen is protecting everyone but on the floor they should be mandatory.

Matt Hancock is not going to be popular proposing permanent video gp appointments - for a lot of people it's a loss of independence if they need family to run the zoom account for them - my parents are technophobe and will always need someone to do complex technical stuff for them. And a lot of the old who use technology do still miss the old days. The article in question isn't proposing GPs be solely be video appointments, just that they should be used as a first resort unless it is clinically necessary to be face to face. A video call isn't complex in the slightest. It is for someone who finds sending a text hard.

The press are clear in hinting that the government is concerned mainly about high rates in Asian communities - every borough involved has a large Asian community. Obviously plenty of white people are breaking rules and spreading it as well in the affected areas.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/12253551/meghan-harry-exiled-royals-made-bed-poll/'ALMOST half of Brits think Meghan and Harry should be exiled from the Royal Family because they have “made their bed”, a poll has revealed. Four in 10 believe the pair should be permanently ousted - with more than half branding their controversial biography Finding Freedom “inappropriate”. ' 'Prince Andrew is the UK’s least favourite royal, with Meghan second from bottom.' 'The Queen remains the UK’s favourite royal, with Prince Harry in second place - despite the public backlash. Kate is the third most popular, with husband William close behind, followed by Princess Anne and then Prince Charles.'
Media having an impact but the unwanted findings are hidden only the wanted ones in the headline.

With the reports of the long term effects Covid is having we do need to fear the virus. It's a disease that will likely be treatable with a vaccine and treatments in the coming months and years. We will have to live with it just as we have with other diseases. Shutting down everything with work and no play is not sustainable and frankly miserable. It is being reported to cause heart damage in healthy people not even ill enough to go to hospital.

I guess there is no crystal ball to see how the virus will pan out and when there will be a vaccine. The government is in an impossible position really as it cannot please both sides by approving what could turn out to be a dangerous precedent of non socially distant indoor performances. As has previously been mentioned it is not just the performance but everything else that goes along with it, such as bar, toilets, getting everyone in and out and to their seats....Here's hoping that things will turn out more positive quicker than we expect though. That is the big issue - toilets and all the narrow spaces.

With the government telling us a second wave is coming what did you expect? Well atleast we are prepared. Life is about risk, and unfortunately, we have been removed of many of our freedoms and much of our employment has disappeared or about to disappear. We can't live in fear forever. With the reports of the long term effects Covid is having I fear the virus.

But SD is already over for some industries - eg travel - no social distancing required on planes. Still not clear why theatre can't also be considered for an exception where you can show risks are minimal, whether through mask use, air filtration systems, etc. Everyone facing the same way also reduces risk. I think a more pilots need to be done in order to fully test it. If I was ALW or another theatre owner, I would do a trial with the same measures as the Palladium pilot but with no social distancing. Apart from South Korea and possibly Japan, are any entertainment venues around the world planning to fully open with no social distancing? The government and local councils will be wary of approving trials for no distancing trials coming for a while for obvious reasons. ALW can't unilaterally do one

The big issue is that it is hard to scientifically prove if the risk is reduced or not.

No more guidance for indoor performance without social distancing until Nov What a farce. Bye bye to the theatre industry. With the government telling us a second wave is coming what did you expect?
