true.
Do you think RSC is converting the target young audience though.....are they now flocking to Stratford out of school time..?
They seem to think they are,so,if thats now the stated aim it seems to be fine.
So much for Greg saying....I will put SHAKESPEARE back into RSC.

Maybe not quite as bad as this but not very thrilling. However dont worry Greg tells The Times today no British actors can play Macbeth-Sorry Kinnear dont bother-and we need Jackman/Crowe to come over.He also looks forward to Harriet Walter playing the role.
I think RSC have got very lost and the Doran/Whyman partnership plays politics but not serving the plays or the repertoire well at all.All this is brought into focus by the memory of what Sir Peter Hall created.

I just cant get excited
some of the shows may turn out to be great....but I feel and this may be wrong that RSC is far more about education than creating memorable, dynamic theatre.Of course....great to engage the young, have all female directors, schoolchildren doing R and J prologue etc. However where is the RSC.....that company where actors and directors, writers and designers sought to re-evaluate the plays.Todays announcement is lack lustre and the facebook video of Greg Doran a total disaster. I should add its all 'in my opinion'and hopefully I will be proved wrong. The fire is not ignited by todays announcement at all.

seeing Brooks Dream was ,indeed,a lifechanger.
Saw Sonnets a few years back in Swan with Pennington....the Brook insight has never faded.I will worship at the temple on Thursday when he speaks at NT.

Fantasy thought. Imagine a Brook in Swan for RSC......nothing epic....just a chamber work.

good to see Peter Brook in town next week.look forward to his new short book of wisdom
boufes du nord strongly tipped for Edinburgh Int Festival next year with two productions inc one by Katie Mitchell who really seems to be worlds busiest director with theatre and opera everywhere.NT lost her.... RSC too........rather short sighted.

i do think its odd that we talk today about immersive theatre as if this has just been discovered.Of course Starlight Express was a great piece of immersive work and sittting in Front Circle at Apollo Victoria a thrilling experience.Go back also to Astley,Restoration and Jacobean Masque....it has always been a feature of innovative theatre artists to seek ways of immersing the audience.Hope Starlight does emerge from the new workshops with tour potential on large scale...extended stays in found spaces. One can only hope...be better than a pros tour with screens etc.Never really excited about that revival./

To get back on topic the appointment of Michelle Terry may herald a new sort of leadership that becomes more widespread and thus reduces the overall agendas of directors. The voice of the actor and the play may become, once more, paramount.
Michelle Terry is in a fascinating position having worked with a range of directors across the spectrum that should ensure a broad church at Globe.
I doubted whether the new AD would have time to plan a full 2018 season given that we are nearing the close of the current one. However the implication does indeed suggest that she will be able to do this....one wonders how long she has been aware of the appointment. If so-this is good,no transfer programme but straight into a new plan.
Personally,Cant Wait.

It would not have worked....Globe is not Open Air Theatre Regents Park or similar. It has a core mission and has, until ER been considerably more experimental and bold.Witness Lucy Bailey Titus as one example.I do blame board for appointing Rice and believing that a Kneehigh ethos could work.....Globe already had the festival atmosphere, thousands of people of all ages and demographic as audience and an approach that was diverse.Look at Globe To Globe bringing in companies of all nations and styles.
Kneehigh is superb but it has a very different approach and working on core Eliz/Jacobean repertoire needs degrees of scholarship alongside theatricality. The folksy approach of ER has a popular appeal at first but imagine a long term perspective....even Kneehigh have become a formulaic approach.
Wise Children will be a statement of ER approach and belief in making her style of theatre-probably very enjoyable-yet not Globe and a core Shakespeare repertoire.I have said before Rylance and Dromgoole were both experimentalists in their approach-even original practices applied in 21st century is a bold experiment. The latter also commissioned a raft of new plays-some fascinating, some illuminating, some poor but all relating to the epic potential of the house.
There is,right now,in theatre circles a defensive stand alongside ER and certainly the board need their collective heads examined as they knew the type of director/producer they were getting.Did they expect her to suddenly adjust and diversify her approach..?
An AD must be announced soon and the position must go to someone with excellent track record in Shakespeare and classical, epic theatre styles and a love of playing with space and actor-audience dynamics.New AD must not feel audiences are lacking intellect or understanding....A wood near Athens.....is not Hoxton....despite the laugh the line achieved.
Entering the Globe itself is to accept experiment and previous AD's understood this....I cannot see why suddenly it is only ER who brought Globe to the people.Where Globe are now at fault is to keep silent on future and hopes for seasons 2018 and beyond.
Whilst I am on a roll-forgive me-what has happened to some of the Globe company pre ER...? Fine actors and understanding how to transmit the text...and,yes,able to connect with diverse audiences.
Maybe next year-a one off season curated by a guest with a strong idea may be worth thinking on....before everyone else is unavailable. It is troubling to see all the ER coverage,Arts Council support for Wise Children-a company who do not yet exist and the finger given to Globe.Contempt for audiences and a lack of communication will alienate more of us than the boards stupidity over the appointment made last time.

Delighted that Globe will start live cinema with King Lear.
Now lets move with new AD.........with Emma R at Old Vic with Wise Children ,think it must be time to let Globe audiences know what lies ahead in thoughts of policy etc.
Too long in the dark.
