Really enjoyed this but was confused at the point of the Germans. They didn't seem to advance the plot at all and were just annoying every time they appeared.

Mods: please move this to the Opera and Ballet section. I went in tonight expecting this to be good, boy was I in for a hiding, the performances were enjoyable Renee Fleming great when I saw her in Carousel, less so tonight because of the source material. Big show for Dove Cameron to appear in, so credit where it is due, she could of just winged it in Glinda in Wicked. Rob Houchen was mildly enjoyable, however the performances were weighed down by a leaden score. If there's talking then it isn't an opera. Magic Flute? Fille du Regiment?

I was at the performance tonight. Ruthie was very good indeed - had a walking stick for the whole performance. She was (understandably) very very emotional at the end (uncontrollably sobbing), and Ken Watanabe picked her up.

Absolutely stunning piece of theatre. Moved me to tears in several parts. Gorgeous musically and lyrically and full of wit and charm. 5/5 for me.

Saw this last night for the 3rd time and it's still a fabulous evening of entertainment.
First time seeing Lulu. She's... not as bad as I was expecting, but not of the same vocal quality and charisma as Sheena Easton.
Ashley Day is a great piece of casting. Not only is he gorgeous (he pretty much looks like a Sean Cody performer) and charming, he is vocally very strong.
Clare Halse has improved in my opinion - she was dazzling.

Does anyone else think the daughter character is unrealistically bratty for a 30 year old?

I really really liked this. I was particularly moved by the scenes addressing the dedication to each other of Charles and Diana.

This is on at my local cineworld tomorrow. Should I go? I could do with no spending £17 really. I've only seen two operas - both Puccini (Butterfly and Tosca) so I have no idea if I'd like Verdi.... The music is highly accessible but I don't think it's as catchy as some of his other work like Rigoletto. It's a very good theatrical production though and you'll get to see Netrebko who is one of opera's biggest stars in a role that she is outstanding in.

I’m glad the reviews for this are good - it’s the kind of thing the National is perfect for and I’m always glad when they give a voice to quality new work and upcoming writers.

Was just at the matinee
I really enjoyed this a lot and I was quite affected by it. It’s very melodramatic and there were a lot of people weeping around me. There were a smattering of people giving a standing ovation at the end.
Agree with the comments that act 2 is far superior to act 1. I think that’s because it does take a bit of work to buy into the premise which is a hard sell. Act 1 takes some twisty directions and spends a lot of time setting the scene.
It very much comes together in act 2 though and it’s very intense and fast paced. The audience really seemed engrossed by the end.
For me it’s one of the best new plays I’ve seen for a while and I say this as someone that sees ~ 2 a week. I thought it was much better than Mosquitoes for example.

Breathtaking. Brought me to tears.
It’s a superb production of a musical I didn’t know much about at all but now wondering why it’s not more famous.
For me it’s up there with my all time favourites

Is there a list anywhere of the various casts throughout the year? Trying to remember who I saw the different times I went to see it. I wish musicals did what opera does and publish the cast lists of each production and each performance online

I saw it live with the same cast as was in the BBC broadcast and I loved it. For me it's a solid 4 star production (in many ways very conventional - but it really works for this piece. None of that outer space rubbish) that I will happily re-watch if the cast interests me.
I thought the new fireplace and the Cafe Momos scenes were particularly gorgeous, and it seemed to appeal to the essence of La Boheme. I really liked all the actors, who looked and acted how I imagine the characters should (and age appropriate too).
I've seen a lot of Boheme productions and this was up there with my favourites.

I saw this from the £25 seats and absolutely loved it. Me and my partner were quite emotional at the end, it's a very life affirming musical that takes you on an emotional roller coaster.

Just got back from this. What a mess. It seemed like it was being pulled in all directions, with no logic at all. The characters were wildly inconsistent and the plot was totally incoherent.
It's a shame because the central performance by Victoria Hamilton was outstanding, and there were some very good moments. All in all, if completely re-written it's possible something could be salvaged.
Expecting the critics to tear this apart.
