Surely Celie in The Colour Purple is the most tragic, even though she gets a triumphant end? or is this thread about the characters with the most tragic end?

I agree I thought it was a pretty solid tour, and the set was VERY matilda-esque!
I think I'll wait to reserve judgement on Miranda, I know we haven't seen any other persona that her stand up and her comical buffoonery, but if she's always wanted to do the role she could well be a big surprise!
And after recent stunt casting failures, I'm sure producers are being careful in making sure their stars can actually do the role!

so i saw on their website that they are doing daystars from the box office, just wondering if anyone has done that and had any luck? or if they know if its a large line for them? thanks! Its a bit difficult to judge at the minute, as they have literally done them a couple of days so it is very new. But I imagine, once word gets out, it will be a 7/8am line up to see it! Also be aware it is only Monday to Friday, so no Saturday performances will have dayseats. ah thank you, i did wonder why it wasn't more common knowledge! going to try sometime next week and hopefully won't have to get up at the crack of dawn for it do you know how long they've been doing it?

i saw it yesterday matinee, so the final preview and i did enjoy it but goodness me a 3 hour musical is a lot! While it dint drag it did make me restless when we were reaching the ends of each act which is a shame.
I saw in the programme Say A Little Prayer and House Is Not A Home (Reprise) were listed but not performed, have they now been cut since the programmes were made I'm assuming?
I enjoyed the show very much, Chuck's constant talks to the audience were sometimes grating but it was a very enjoyable show with a great score (not sure what the ES were listening too but i loved it!) Always impressive to see how much set they're storing in the SP, and i liked the projections and nods to movies i.e the ends of each act with it circling to black.
For me, another great musical at SP but they need to be much zippy-er, especially the first 15/20 mins which could have been slicked up much more! lets get the running time down to a reasonable hour please!!

i don't know about Andy Karl being a lock to win the Olivier, Groundhog Day has long closed and the buzz around Charlie Stemp pulling in a wonderful star turn that any celebrity would dream of doing in a classic British musical with a new lease of life? AND he's following in the footsteps of Tommy Steele who is beloved by many and he's pulling it off?! Sounds like something the Oliviers would want to reward, you know how they are!

Not sure if anyone was following this, but a new musical based on Robin Hood (with a Chicago twist they say!), HOODS has been releasing one track a day for Christmas of their studio album but has the entire album up to listen for Boxing Day only, listen here on soundcloud. Wondering if anyone has listened to it? Any thoughts? Or just something to do on Boxing Day!

Agree that what happens live wasn't captured on the live stream tonight, the atmosphere didn't translate and yes the acting did look a little flat.
Pick out a Simple Tune I think was a bigger number in this than Flash Bang Wallop, I had similar feelings watching it this week that it didn't quite pack the huge punch it did in the original.
But I thought the filming just was great, and it was lovely to see the curtain call, I wish it hadn't faded out I wanted to hear all of the exit music!! (bit of a nerd like that!)
Also interesting to see that while the numbers did peak at around 500, both the blue carpet and this are now showing 3k views under the video so it got decent numbers from somewhere

But I can't lie, if this was revived, I think I'd have to go out of morbid curiosity! i think i have to second this! i agree perhaps an intimate setting would improve the feel of the show (as well as some rewrites!) its a shame they couldn't consider the Aldwych run an out of town tryout. Its commendable that they are going back to a big public flop and trying to fix it.

I can't help but wonder how good it could have been in other hands, Kander and Ebb for example. As much as I did enjoy most of the score the thought of a Kander and Ebb Side Show would have been thrilling!

What is devasting is the endless use of this ruddy boxes completely agree! sometimes they were used well and other times i thought "shall we give it a rest for a second!" i enjoyed the show and thought all the performances were good, didn't realise the opening number would be so... interactive! Lizard man writhing in my face was a little scary!!

booked for this tomorrow night, got an isle seat on the stage left bank so close to centre. looking forward to the show, I only know a handful of the songs but I hope it good.
I really like the pictures that have been put up so far of the set, from reading reviews on here it doesn't sound like it has Thom Sutherlands sparkle but hopefully its still good!

wow! interesting on broadwayworld they've been chatting about The Life, saying that is wouldn't be a piece to be revived anytime soon so this is surprising news!
I know a handful of the songs but i love Colemans work so I'm excited, once again Southwark Playhouse coming out on top with exciting and new productions of shows!

5-I hope they go with the alternate mid-week and/or matinee Norma this time. And they should do what they did with Hello, Dolly! and cast someone truly capable of holding their own like a Carolee Carmello or a Marin Mazzie type. OR Donna Murphy on a non-Tuesday Dolly performance! i know reading her interviews that she probably wouldn't go for that but THAT i would love to see and surely go down as something historical!!

I think Sonia Friedman said specifically she was going to put some of the £20 seats next to more expensive seats, so I guess there's also an element of randomisation as to which are going to be the £20 seats from night to night. I can't bring myself to book for it though, apologies to Cherry Jones... ah there we go then! can't think why you would, but I'm looking forward to seeing the show

Got for M stalls for £20! no clue why this lone seat was in amongst the £59 seats! Actually just looked at other dates and that same seat is sold at £59, perhaps after opening night??!
Seeing this on the same day as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, that'll be a day!

if you're a les mis fan LES MISERABLES: HISTORY IN THE MAKING is a really great one and is quite uncommon (although Amazon have it for a penny so what do I know!) remember seeing it in my Library years ago, it was a great read.

my favourite is SONDHEIM AND CO. if you're a sondheim fan and like finding out about he creation of his shows it is a must. it also has small chapters that talk about things that apply to all productions like recording cast albums and such. it goes from west side story to sunday... (with a smattering of into the woods). lots on follies which is very interesting. can pick ip up from amazing for about £3, its a big 460 page book and my favourite one.
another great one is SONG OF SPIDERMAN, i guess an autobiographical account of the creation of the spiderman musical, and this book is written by the book writer for the show. told very similar to a fiction novel but its a great read and you almost wonder how and why it failed here.
agree patti lupones book is great!

if i hadn't checked here today i wouldn't have even known this production was happening! I know it had been discussed a few months back but i love the surprise announcement with tickets being available to buy on the same day rather than 'oh this productions happening in X time, and booking for it is X time away so the buzz will have died down' very smart to just announce it (or did i miss something?!)
also thanks to this board i got £10 Dress for the matinee before opening night, i feel so hasty to buy 6 months in advance but for that price and that seat I'm fine! Also with ATG cards you have free ticket exchange (though i doubt they'll be many seats left for this!) what a wonderful friday!

i don't know about that ^, with sara barreilles' score from waitress being such a hit, both commercially and with MT fans, i thought Lily Allen was a good fit for the project
agreed that Sheridan was a perfect fit for the project, i thought she was great in legally blonde and funny girl but neither role (for me) fit her as much as bright jones would (in my head..!)

Agree row H! couldn't ask for a better seat in my opinion!
It was my first time going to this theatre and i found it rather charming, no pealing paint and the bar and foyer areas looked rather nice, but that might just be me.
I was amazed to see how far back the seating extended, for such a small auditorium!

saw it tonight and absolutely adored it! what a glorious production!
my first time at charing cross theatre and at first look the stage looked terribly small but once the show starts its fine and is busted very very well! Its a very large seating area for such a small stage, but a really nice little theatre.
I missed the show when it was at the southwark and am so glad to have the chance to see it again, i love Sutherland's work, id love to see his Grand Hotel again!
