Sorry - couldn't preview post for some reason - I'd attempted to quote oxfordsimon's comment about Doran and Sher.

I've heard that too. Can't imagine that Doran would've cast Sher any more frequently than Boyd cast Slinger, however (and the phrase 'Royal Slinger Company' was certainly doing the rounds for a time).
Going back to the Almeida casting, I'm more than happy to see Matthew Needham - seen him on a number of occasions with various companies and always found him impressive.

I don't understand why they have put McKellen in the Minerva when he would have sold out the main house reading the phone book. A few years ago Chichester put on 'The Deep Blue Sea' in the main theatre while Ian McKellen was appearing in 'The Syndicate' in the Minerva. At a Q&A session Philip Franks, who directed 'The Deep Blue Sea', said that it was originally intended for the Minerva but was swapped because McKellen wouldn't appear in the main theatre.

I remember a friend seeing Becket where Jacobi swapped with someone (want to say Robert Powell or Lindsay? But not sure that's right) Someone will know the details. Jacobi and Lindsay did 'Beckett' at the Haymarket in, I think, the 1990s, Jacobi played Beckett and Lindsay the King. There was certainly speculation they would swap roles at some point in the run but I don't think it ever actually happened.

Yes - it was excellent and both ballets showed the Royal Ballet's dancers to advantage in very different ways. It would be nice to see more Ashton ballets consistently taking their place in the company's repertoire.
