Anyone thinks that This Morning will do a segment on how to behave in the theatre is kidding themselves, it's not that sort of programme.

I was there as well and enjoyed it. I've not seen Private Lives before so was going in cold but it's interesting how this 93 year old play was ahead of its time in exploring toxic relationships.
I think Rachael Stirling was the strongest of the cast as Amanda but they all on form.

It's very similar to the Cameron Mackintosh logos like Cats, My Fair Lady and Oliver!

It plainly wasn't a failure, and I haven't made it out to be (another of your straw man arguments) but it wasn't a big success in the way Les Mis and Matilda were. That's all. I also object to them using their entire 2023-24 Barbican residency, along with their subsidy, to revive it apparently because no commercial theatre either in the West End or on Broadway or anywhere else want it. Like Hamnet this production had commercial producers attached so it should be up to them to organise and pay for unsubsidised revivals. It is also not acceptable for them to not have had a single Shakespeare production in London for a period of three years and counting (assuming they bring one in Winter 2024). #DefundTheRSC 'it wasn't a big success in the way Les Mis and Matilda were.' Feels like an odd one to compare seeing as a) those are musicals and b) they're a lot further through their respective lifespans. Six Olivier Awards, the most of any show this year, is pretty wild a success for the RSC and capitalising on it is a pretty natural thing to do. "It is also not acceptable for them to not have had a single Shakespeare production in London" – is London meant to be the ultimate end-point for RSC shows? They are touring Julius Caesar and will likely do more with other shows in 2024. Plus Hamnet is a play about Shakespeare, even if it isn't a Shakespeare play. So feel like all these bees (or not to bees) are unnecessarily in the bonnet. It's honestly pointless debating Jan, cirque and the usual suspects. You try pointing out the RSC's successes and they shoot them down or ignore them. I imagine theatre owners want Totoro but there isn't a suitable venue available at the moment.

The blood oddly didn't bother me because from the stage, it looked very fake!

Bringing suitcases isn't bad behaviour but I do think it's good practice to perhaps not bring him heavy items. I wonder what people do if a theatre doesn't have a cloakroom.

It's not super obvious that it's meant to be Hitler, I think the logo with the writing need to be placed higher to make a face.

I find it strange that this case hasn't made it to any of the trades. The Stage is normally all over this sort of news.

I understand Chocolate Factory Productions Limited have filed an 'Accelerated possession claim' against 'Persons Unknown' at the High Court. There is a short hearing this afternoon at 4pm in Court 73 at the RCJ. What does this mean? It means that the Menier is in dispute with their landlord, my guess is that the landlord wants to redevelop the entire block and the Menier isn't budging.

Biggins at Shirley Valentine. Noticed him from across the stalls as he was hovering in the aisle with an usher right before the show started, before being led off to the rear stalls. Then he was back again, usher in tow, at the end of the interval this time having blagged himself an upgrade to about the fifth row. Biggins is such a cheap skate!

I suppose the producers are confident it'll be a sellout like it was in Stratford.

It is not unusual for this comment to be made when a show transfers from a smaller venue into a larger house or when it is put in large venues as it tours. People often are (rightly) concerned about the potential loss of intimacy that might have made a production work so well. Good directors work with the production team to adjust design and staging and with actors to play to the larger space. Some shows adapt quite well with little being lost and in some cases, some gains made from the additional space available. Others can leave the audience feeling distant and remote from the production. I do think some shows just can't go into bigger theatres, it's fine for a comedian or a singer to do a 2000+ venue but a one person show like Fleabag or Prima Facie at say the Palladium would lose that connection to the audience.

It's mad that Barlett Sher with his experience at directing at the Beaumont has never been approached by the NT to direct a play or musical for the Olivier stage.

Not paying £30 for the back of the uppermost tier. #WithdrawRSCFunding This isn't Twitter, no need for a hashtag.

Surely with a cast of 12, they'd need somewhere a bit bigger than the Ambassadors?

For some reason I've decided to attempt a 3 show day with Winnie The Pooh / Secret Life of Bees / Once On This Island and end the trip with a Sunday matinee of A Little Life. Good luck with getting to all the various theatres on that day!

The film was in development before the play adaptation, it's the same producers involved in both.

You could apply the same question to concerts or sports events, both can be just as if not more expensive than theatre but nobody seems to say are they are worth it.

Surely the answer to that depends on your preference.
I do respect Derek Jacobi but there are so many ways to get affordable tickets, it doesn't just have to be top priced ones.

Sad news but I did wonder how a small fringe venue could suddenly catapult into a much bigger, more upmarket venue with such a mixed offering. I think it should have gone for the "neighbourhood theatre" vibe. The Park and Hampstead Theatres should have been their model, especially the former. The Riverside isn't and never was a fringe venue, it's a mixed arts centre that also has a TV studios attached, theatre is only one part of what they do. Looking into it, it seems like the TV studios side won't be affected as it's a separate company.

It is, I checked with ATG. Brilliant. Were you able to purchase online or do you have to call? I called as you can't use the voucher on ATG's website.

I've booked for next Friday using the National Lottery voucher. Can't wait to see both the show and to finally visit the Fortune Theatre. How did you do that? Fortune Theatre wasn’t showing as part of the promotion when I looked earlier. It is, I checked with ATG.

The commercial producers involved does make me wonder if they are planning a West End run after Southwark?

I'm surprised they chose Moana over Frozen for a live action remake.
We're seeing more recent movies being remade as live action films, Universal and DreamWorks are doing a live action remake of How to Train Your Dragon and that came out in 2010.

Regarding: Long Day’s Journey Into Night, starring Brian Cox, to be directed by Jeremy Herrin, due for spring 2024 It has a link from DMT - www.delfontmackintosh.co.uk/whats-on/long-days-journey-into-nightLikely venue predictions? Wyndham’s (currently home of Oklahoma!) - but the Lesley Manville-Jeremy Irons version of LDJIN was in this same venue 5 years ago.. Gielgud (To Kill a Mockingbird concludes this May) - popular venue for plays, and will also have Sondheim’s Old Friends until January 2024 Noël Coward (Bake Off musical is here until May, followed by Patriots) - surprised that we haven’t heard much about what’s next show for the autumn and beyond. Not sure yet if the Donmar/Almeida musicals like The Band’s Visit, Secret Life of Bees, etc. will transfer immediately. Or if Donmar’s Private Lives becomes a hit, they might transfer here, after all, Coward wrote the original play. The other venues like the Prince Edward, Apollo Victoria, etc. have long running shows so they’re unlikely options. I don't think Long Day's Journey was ever likely for a musical house like the Prince Edward.
