I don’t comment on this site much but I’m Jewish and I have been upset by this all day. It’s not the name itself that’s a problem, it’s the name which is, whatever googling people want to do, very very clearly Jewish, being attached to every antisemitic trope in the planet about Jewish people being avaricious, money-grabbing, ‘stealing indigenous land’, I can go on but the trailer from the play in the context of a clearly intended Jewish character (and no, I don’t for a split second believe their ‘but the character isn’t Jewish, thing - Herschel Fink isn’t a dog whistle, it’s a dog foghorn) is very uncomfortable viewing and to me, screams racism .
What hurts more is the Royal Court fluffing on about what great work they are doing on anti-racism while clearly showing contempt and ignorance of the Jewish community at a time of rising antisemitism. It’s not cancel culture. They can change the name - and could have at any point in the process - without changing the play and it wouldn’t have been an issue. The same play with a name that didn’t scream ‘this is a Jewish man’, wouldn’t have the same connotations because they wouldn’t link to centuries old tropes.
I’m sad it has to be spelt out like this. I’m off again to lurking for a few more years
And just to add - thank you so much to those who have spoken out. It has been a bit grim being Jewish over the last few years in particular and I have stopped expecting people to ‘get it’ so I am really really grateful to those who do and have spoken up

Hi, does anybody know If I can buy 1 ticket for matinee and 1 ticket for the evening show as dayseats? Thank you! I was in a day seat last Saturday evening and person sitting next to me had been at the matinee too so I assume so

I'm going to add a rave - I grabbed a rush ticket (Q2 in the stalls) yesterday evening because I've been having quite a difficult period and wanted a distraction. It was perfect for the purposes. Great show and really uplifting and hopeful. I really, really hope it does well and gets the credit it deserves.

Ah - that feeling when you discover that at least some of the tickets you have booked are in green on Theatremonkey. ;-) Ditto! Though as I booked one of those slightly-less-substantial-but-on-the-aisle-and-cheaper stalls seats, I had reasonable expectations of the view, if not the comfort, and given the comments about the slow exit from the auditorium, I will be on my marks come the interval and end. My only (slight) concern now is that by booking so far ahead, I may have paid too much, but it's probably a fair exchange for the above benefits. I went on Weds and sat in one of those seats in the stalls on the aisle that are ‘fold-down’. Was very good for view and absolutely fine for comfort (I’m a short 5’2” but being on the aisle also meant a bit more space). Don’t think I’d necessarily want to sit through Angels in America for two consecutive parts but i’d definitely book them again

Starlight Express on Friday night. Went to see it when I was a kid and almost forgot everything about it except I thought it was fantastic. Booked for nostalgia's sake and very curious!

In tonights Evening Standard, Miranda is quoted as saying he will appear as Hamilton in some of the UK performances. I've looked at ES online, and there's nothing that says that (where's the article?) - is this hearsay, or an actual Miranda quote? Someone I know has access to newspaper archives for work and she did a check on this (not at all wasting work time!) and she sent me the text of the article - it isn't a direct quote but is exactly as written 'Miranda said he would appear as Hamilton in some UK performances'

I was at the matinee and really enjoyed it. Stand out I though were Will and Ado Annie but those parts are a lot of fun anyway. Really impressed by choreography in a limited space but it's probably scratched my 'oklahoma' itch for a while. Hope they do more of this type of thing at the Proms. I enjoy the semi-staged operas they do as well.

I'm going to the matinee prom. Couldn't resist because I love Oklahoma (and never seen it 'live' - I know this is semi-staged but still.....)

Best play: Angels in America Worst play : Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour (just didn't 'get' it)
Best musical: 42nd Street with Working as highly commended because it was very enjoyably unexpected (for me). Worst musical: Haven't been to any I haven't enjoyed but on the scale of ones I've enjoyed least (and this does feel a bit harsh) - American in Paris.
Worst film: King Arthur (but got a good snooze out of it) Best film: Beauty and the Beast - live action.

So people who have seen this, had you already booked, please? Since as infofreako commented, it seemed pretty booked up. I went to see it on press night and only booked about a week in advance but I had one of the cheap seats in the balcony. And it was a mid-week show

Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh but woman in front of me at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre on Saturday (very hot afternoon), had a little battery operated fan audibly burring the whole way through. It was very hot so I could understand but it was also incredibly distracting

I'm going to Bat Out of Hell on Tuesday and Working (again) on Thursday. Looking forward to both. I know what to expect from Working as I went to the first preview and am sufficiently curious about Bat Out of Hell!

Went to see this on Saturday matinee with Caputo as Chip. I really enjoyed it but (I know I shouldn't complain really) it was uncomfortably hot in the sun. Quite a few people seemed to leave at and before the interval but I think it was more due to the heat and difficulty of sitting so long in it. Can't imagine what it must have been like dancing in it with some of those costumes but enormous fun and I would probably go for an evening performance, were I to go again.

No reflection on the performance but last year, Taming of the Shrew at the Globe. It was a Saturday matinee and the Friday I'd just got back from 2 weeks straight working away. It had been horribly busy and I always struggle to sleep when travelling for work - I had a front row seat and fell asleep during the first half (no snoring but felt quite embarrassed and thought I just needed to go home and get some decent sleep!).

I went to see this last night. Wasn't really sure what to expect but I thought it was great and with some really moving moments (maybe I was just tired after a long week).

Went to see this yesterday at Greenwich and really enjoyed it - i didn't know what to expect as a friend booked it for me (quite rare!) and went in 'cold' but I was really impressed by the writing, plot and acting. I know there's not much more of the tour left but for what it's worth, I found it a very worthwhile evening.

A lot of my friends think I'm odd for going to the theatre on my own but it's so much about being able to book quickly without corralling/persuading! I recently joined the forum but these posts have made me think I'm really among people who 'get it' so thanks to all! (Sorry for off topic - went to 42nd street on my own and loved it so much I went back and sat in one in A1 which I only knew about because of this forum!)

I have never heard of a "strapitan seat." Is it cheap because it's uncomfortable, in which case I'll buy it, or because it's for some particular constituency (eg the less abled or young people), in which case I won't? Anyone know? I've also never heard of them but I guess, from their position on the end of the rows, part-projecting into the aisles, that they are the same as the seats in the Dorfman that look like glorified armrests for the adjacent normal seat until the ticket-holder turns up and folds this "arm rest" down through 90%, to open up a seat and back. I've sat beside one in the Dorfman and the person in it seemed perfectly comfortable and content. In retrospect, he was probably silently chortling over how much less he'd paid than I had. That helps! I had no idea what they were but I booked one on the basis of price..

I'm a member and find it's worth it - they have some big shows with decent discounts. It's more money off top price tickets than extremely cheap tickets (so £40 for top price rather than £80) but there's a great range of shows and I've been to things I wouldn't have done otherwise. I find it's worth the £25 and I save more than that. My price range for shows is generally £30 with a £40 max and have definitely had far better seats than I would otherwise have had for that range and been to things I probably wouldn't have.

While not being able to add to what others have said, I went last night and enjoyed it enormously - I was pretty much smiling from beginning to end and all the way home. I wasn't in one of the cheap front row seats (didn't know about them - recently joined the forum!) but in the middle of the dress circle where the view was great but the price was steep - have booked on of the end front row seats for £15 later in the summer. I don't often book a second time for shows I've already seen so that, in itself says quite a lot (for me).
