If you google “luggage storage Sheffield” (or any city for that matter) there are shops & hotels where you can leave your luggage for a fee (normally about £10/day)

I am determined to get to Sheffield for the the matinee performance on 22 July and the centre front row stalls seat I booked minutes after Miss Saigon went on public sale last year. That Saturday is now a rail strike day.
I had part of my travel already booked, from London to Sheffield by National Express and back by train. Now have to assume the train won't run so have booked National Express from Meadowhall to London for the return journey. There are a lot more coaches to and from Meadowhall than to Sheffield city centre, including Megabus. Cost (£22) not too bad with my senior coachcard for an 18.05 departure.
If the strike is called off or my booked train does run I can amend the coach journey for a fiver and use it to return from Sheffield when I see Barnum in November or White Christmas in December.
Not sure yet how I will get to and back from Victoria if there are no trains from Kent to London but partner will drive me to/from Abbey Wood for the Elizabeth line if necessary.

viserys, if you search Stasher locations for Sheffield, it returns, along with another hotel, a couple of results for Premier Inns in the city centre. If that's the route you decide to go down, my advice is to choose Angel Street. The other is right at the other end of 'town'. Prooving that not everything on the interweb should be believed, a general Google search suggests that Sheffield Bus Station still has left luggage lockers. If it does, I couldn't find them when I went to look not 5 minutes ago. Should push comes to shove, I'll look after your case myself!

Should push comes to shove, I'll look after your case myself! Awww, much appreciated! But I feel safe about leaving the suitcase with a Premier Inn... I'm always a bit doubtful when it's some little corner shop you know nothing about, but surely Premier Inn will be okay and frees me up for a few hours of sightseeing before my friend joins me.

Might want to get a taxi from the station to Angel Street too. It’s not far in distance but it’s uphill, across a big dual carriageway, around buildings etc. Hassle even with a carry-on sized bag. Ubers pick up from the same area as the black cabs. Station concourse, turn left.

That’s stunning, I love it. Claude Michel Schönberg is SO talented. Miss Saigon is truly one of the most sensational MT scores of all time. Sublime!

This reimagining is either going to be great, or an absolute turkey. I'm not willing to make a 200 mile round trip to find out either way, TBH!

Hope no-one minds me asking a random question, but it looks like we might have the benefit of Sheffield locals on here... I am coming up to see the matinee on the 15th July but will be driving my campervan - can anyone recommend decent parking which isn't too tight and without a height barriers? I'm about 2.3 metres high so generally any indoor or barriered parking is no good. I'm happy with a fair walk to the theatre so parking doesn't have to be super close. Thanks!
Edit - just to clarify, this is only for parking whilst at the theatre, not for overnighting! I've got a campsite booked for the night!

I liked her performance but less keen on his I think his performance is too feminine, too affected/posturing. Which makes it very unbelievable. Chris is not meant to be played and sung like a diva. Chris is meant to convince her in this song. He sings it like his husband has just left him. The Kim is a bit more sincere and has a lovely voice in the lower parts but she doesn't convince me either. I see her more as an Yvette at most. They really don't have chemistry together. The score is just wonderful and one of the best in musical theatre indeed.

For me he is too 'x factor', too much looking like he is straining in the face, vocal acrobatics instead of being in character.
In fairness though on stage he could be completely different and have character.

He does sound more pop than MT on that video. Not unpleasant but does that fit the character? Not really.

But I think attempts at authenticity are way down the priority list.

I hope he sorts his Ls out — "In a place that won't let us feew, In a life where nothing seems reew". He's in Miss Saigon, not Me and My Girl!
It is quite a pop-sounding version, but as a stand-alone I don't mind that. I don't know if I'd want it on stage though.

With a bit of time to spare, I'll answer your parking question in due course if I may. First off, I want to draw your attention to Sheffield's newly introduced Clean Air Zone. Although private cars are currently exempt, I believe, from reading various online forums, that campervans are a bit of a grey area. May I strongly suggest that you check the status of your vehicle on the Council website: www.sheffield.gov.uk/clean-air-zone-sheffieldEven if exempt, please, please, please DO NOT drive along Arundel Gate, towards the world-famous Crucible Theatre, in a northerly direction. There is now a bus gate in operation. I'd hate anybody to to receive two separate fines for the same theatre trip. Although the Council seems hellbent on deterring visitors, us locals are, on the whole, really friendly and welcoming.

Thanks musicalfloozie and TallPaul for the advice, please excuse my rudeness thanking you so late! I’m going with my mum and we like a nice walk so will probably check out the Botanical Gardens and possibly one of the National Parks if they’re not too far out? Will probably do some shopping as well and just have a general wonder around the city centre and the area near the Crucible. I’m so excited to see what they’re going to do with this production, especially if it is indeed a 14 piece orchestra!

Can I still access the ridonculousy expensive underground car park beneath the Crucible on Arundel Gate? The bus gate is the other side of the dual carriageway presumably? Despite the theatre’s very reasonable prices this is turning out to be the most expensive theatre ticket ever. I’m having to hire a car FFS.

Depends which way you want to drive along Arundel Gate, BurlyBeaR. If you travel via Park Square and Ponds Forge, then yes you can. If you come the other way, with Sheffield Hallam on your right, you'll have to use the Cheesegrater car park, which I think is Sheffield Theatres 'preferred partner', so at least you'll get some sort of discount. Honestly, you're never happy. If you're not complaining about 90 minute train journeys, you're complaining about car hire and parking charges. 🙂 Our viserys is travelling all the way from Germany. Not a word of complaint!

I remember Jeremy Jordan doing Why God Why (i think) at one of his concerts and always thinking he'd make a great Chris. Not relevant to this production sorry but whilst we were on the subject on how Chris should be sung or how he should be cast....

viserys is probably paying less for the airfare than I am for the carpark! LOL, I'm actually taking the train (Eurostar) and don't fly. But BurlyBeaR has a point, I paid £7.90 for the National Express bus ticket from London to Sheffield But thanks for the parking info; I'll pass that on to my friend who'll be meeting me (and take me home with her).

The Peak District national park is indeed on the doorstep of Sheff but it’s a good hour’s drive away. The Botanical Gardens are in a city park which is in a suburb very close to the city. The Winter Gardens are literally across the square where the Crucible and Lyceum theatres are.

An hour, BurlyBeaR!?! Are you one of those drivers who pootles along like it's always Sunday afternoon? If you're traveling by charabanc, viserys, then there really is no need for a taxi. As you exit the Interchange you should, if you've gone the right way, see a tower block under construction, with a red crane. Keep the building site on your right and head uphill, ironically, along Flat Street. Pass through Fitzalan Square, with its statue of King Edward, and cross the tram tracks. On your left you'll see the EasyHotel and a branch of KFC. Take the next left up King Street, with Subway on the opposite corner. At the top, where the flower beds are, look diagonally right. The Angel Street Premier Inn is on the opposite side of the road.

Thanks TallPaul - actually the coach will chuck me out at Meadowhall, but I've worked out that I can take the yellow tram from there to Castle Square and the Premier Inn will be basically next door, so it's really all very convenient! Since we're all exchanging travel info on the fascinating city of Sheffield, do you have any recoomendations for a nice Indian restaurant near the theatre? We're looking at 400DC at the moment.
