Will also be playing at Bath Theatre Royal from 4 to 19 September, if that is more convenient, with two performances on Sundays! And we now have artwork. Who is Stuart Patterson?

Just booked a Saturday matinee for £24.50 stalls front row. There's a while to go yet, but it may be advisable to check nearer opening night that Row C remains the front row. I booked what I thought was the front row for One Night in Miami, only to find myself sitting several rows back! From the Bath website:

I did, and wasn't wild about the lyric, if I'm honest - unless being deliberately kept in the style of the 1950s or something? I agree, however having now listened to it twice I do have the bit that goes "you're my sister, you're my sister" stuck in my head. I'm curious, is this going to be set in the 50s or modern day? The first photos of the girls sitting on Identical made me think modern but the new image makes me think maybe it's set in the past. I also don't like that the new poster says "based on the novel "The Parent Trap". As far as I know the book has never been called that, it's "Lottie and Lisa" and I've read it many times. The original title is "Das Doppelte Lotchen" which does not translate to Parent Trap either, it's The Double Lottie.

I like musicals; I like what I've seen of Stiles and Drew's work and I'd love the opportunity to revisit Nottingham - where I haven't been for at least 20 years - and a venue new to me. However, I really don't enjoy the sound of children singing and found the clip dippy kindly posted frankly excruciating. Does anyone else share my dislike or am I coming across like a female Herod?

I don't enjoy that song. It goes on a bit doesn't it. It seems a bit too challenging for the singers too and the lyrics are somewhat cringe. It reminded me in parts of Mary Poppins for some reason but all that songs in that are far better!
Not the best first impression for the show IMO

I'm totally the same. I didn't really enjoy Matilda and I think this is why because I've since gone away and listened to its cast recording and realised a lot of the genius of the lyrics and score but I still can't get over how children sound when they sing - breathy, no vibrato but also I just don't think the song is very good either, it's repetitive and annoying.

I agree with you. For me the lowlight of every performance of Les Mis I've seen is Castle on a Cloud, as the little Cosettes always sound flat to my ears. I have never & will never see Matilda. I have no intention of seeing this musical either so I don't even know why I clicked on the thread!

Postponed for the second time to 2022. New dates to be confirmed "over the coming weeks."
The 10-year-old twins are now middle-aged women! 🙂

Was really looking forward to a new Stiles & Drewe show, although it's not unexpected with kids being involved. I'm still hopeful we'll see Becoming Nancy over here sometime soon, and also the rest of Soapdish (loved what I saw at MT Fest).

The new dates are Tuesday 24 July to Sunday 14 August 2022. Existing ticket holders should have been contacted.
Interesting that here is a regional theatre also going down the Sunday route, not just this year, but next.
Sir Trevor has already started working on his speech for the first day of rehearsals. 🙂

Thanks for the update - I’ve added those dates to my list of shows to see (despite it being 2022!). Something to look forward to.

If they’re going to constantly refer to this as “Identical based on The Parent Trap” why didn’t they just call it The Parent Trap.

I see the ensemble includes an actor by the name of Ellie Nunn. What are the chances?

Mine were for the stalls originally so I think possibly sent in error but I’ve emailed them to check Edit: upper circle is closed but email sent to everyone in error

First thoughts from tonight, second preview.
For the most part I liked it, although it is overly long letting out at 5 to 10 (7pm start). The music is overall strong, with a few standout numbers (I loved “If I Became You” and the title song, sung beautifully by Emily Tierney) - classic Styles and Drewe. The book though, particularly the last 15 minutes, needs major work, and the pace needs to lift massively. I don’t think they’d struggle to trim a good 15-20 minutes. The adult ensemble numbers in particular could easily go. I’m only familiar with the Lindsay Lohan film version and I didn’t think the characters seemed as well fleshed out as in that version, particularly the new wife to be ballet dancer.
Loved the scenic design, lots on screens with some physical set pieces too but it really looked lovely and sorted
Audience upstairs were pretty horrific. I’ve never had so much noise interference from crinkly wrappers - made worse by the fact that the playhouse sell popcorn in paper bags. This made it really difficult to hear at times. Lots of young kids who were getting very restless too.
With a much tighter book I think this could be great. Often with new musicals my biggest critique is of the score but I found that to be one of the best elements.

But they’re ok with them saying “based on The Parent Trap” everywhere?
So I could make a musical about a flying elephant and call it “The flying Elephant based on Dumbo” and that would be ok?
I’ll never understand law 🤪

I am glad it's not called The Patent Trap, I've never liked that name for the story and sad that the book has officially been renamed that over here. To me it always has been and always will be "Lottie and Lisa", or "Das Doppelte Lottchen". Identical isn't a bad name for it at all but I guess it's not something people are familiar with.
From the pictures I'm glad it looks like the books, interesting that Irene is a ballet dancer and in Hansel and Gretl. I'm curious, is the Hansel and Gretl nightmare in it? I do wished I could see this soon but timings don't work at all with work, I probably won't get to see it till the very end of August.

Saw this last night. A pleasant enough musical. Unfortunately, for me, the weakest part was the music itself. The cast all did a decent job and especially so the child actors - it’s definitely a musical that can’t just rest on solid adult performances if the kids aren’t up to scratch. Thought the design was actually quite nicely done for screen-based backdrops, with the multiple moving parts and real pieces of set to compliment them (but please can we lose the horrible fades between scenes that are all too often used when going for digital backgrounds). And the book whips along at quite a nice pace, even if it ties it all up a bit too quickly and neatly at the end.
But the music is unmemorable, and while it has nice moments, on the whole it’s not got much oomph to it - charming but forgettable would be my summary of it.
All in all, there’s lots to like but it feels like it doesn’t quite land musically and I’m not sure, overall, it really knows who it is aimed at.

Had an email from the Lowry changing the start time from 7.30 to 7.00 and an updated end time of 9.50. 2hr 50 and this is supposed to appeal to families? Nope. Trevor Nunn strikes again.

We’ll no doubt get the usual bunch of people who “didn’t get the memo” turning up for a 7.30 start and disturbing everyone.
