I’m quite surprised that she is following this path as she’s had a fair bit of success with songwriting for others, and her solo album showed real pop perfection promise. Genuinely not meaning to be rude, but her album bombed. What success has she had writing for others? I can't imagine she's making any sort of a living from working in music unless she's got a successful publishing deal that I wasn't aware of. Her album may have bombed, but its flippin' sensational. And those of us who saw her one off gig last year know her voice is sounding much stronger than ever... whether she can act is another thing though! She's also written with/for Cheryl, Little Mix, Tinashe and Lethal Bizzle (amongst others) Don't get me wrong - i'm not defending this bizarre stunt cast, but credit where it's due - girl can write a mean pop song!

Personally I'm delighted at this casting. I always thought Nicola was the best singer in Girls Aloud, she's had a tough year and has been on the receiving end of some very cruel. unfair body shaming.
I predict she'll do a lot better than her former "ghostly" colleague in musical theatre and City Of Angels will hopefully kickstart a successful change in career direction for her.

The theatreboard Paradox: To bemoan 'stunt casting' celebrities, and to bemoan actors that aren't sufficiently well-known...

To be fair it’s not much of an acting heavy part. Or much of an anything part really - bar one song. I’m sure she’ll be more than fine.

The theatreboard Paradox: To bemoan 'stunt casting' celebrities, and to bemoan actors that aren't sufficiently well-known... At least if you stunt cast someone well known it makes sense from a business point of view but when it's these d-list celebrities that are getting cast and are still not good actors and/or singers (Waitress being the prime example - not a dig at the show just at the casting choices) then it's like what's the point, this benefits nobody (obviously we don't know how it'll go in this case but theres a track record with this sort of thing that doesn't instill much confidence).

This really is a shame because had Nicola not been cast in this show, I would have been prepared to spend more money than I now will. The rest of the cast is so strong and then there's her... It's off-putting.

I think the thing to take from this is that at least Nicola can sing. Really sing.

Is this a better show than it is a score?
Acquired the CD and the music (to my taste) is very samey and really quite boring - it's less hummable than Sondheim!

If they were going to cast someone from Girls Aloud, I would've preferred Nadine tbh. She’s got a better voice & surely would shift a lot more tickets - especially after her stint on I’m A Celeb.

Yes! Nadine Coyle! Would have loved her thick Northern Irish accent. Sugar, butter, FLOYER. Nadine had the best voice in Girls Aloud by far. Although, Kimberley Walsh's voice has come on leaps and bounds since Girls Aloud. This show just didn't need a stunt cast, especially a stunt cast this poor.

Yes, she is a sort of known celebrity, but i wonder if they will reprint and advertise with her name on it.
But she only has 1 number, Lost and Found, which is a sultry number, sang half undressed in bed. I think it might suit her style of singing. Having seen them live, She was definitely one of the better singers in Girls Aloud.

I can’t remember if Nicola Roberts was one of the Girls Aloud who could actually sing (I mean, I only really thought Nadine could) I took my niece to see Girls Aloud (my excuse lol) in 2008, and I remember ranking them in the order of how well I felt they could sing, and Nicola Roberts came a strong second to Nadine Coyle in my estimation, with Kimberly Walsh in third. Roberts had a lot of belt, a little rasp, and sang the lead on the few songs Nadine Coyle didn't. Her voice wasn't as pretty as Coyle's but it was slightly more powerful. I'm sure she'll sing the role well, though a lot who saw the show at the Donmar will miss Samantha Barks, as she made a major impression in a minor role. And it IS a minor role, which is why this casting is just fine. It's who replaces Tam Mutu as Stone, the joint lead role, and the one demanding the most charisma (Mutu had as much gruff swagger as Humphrey Bogart), that really matters here. Get that wrong, and the production will be mediocre. Get it right, and I'll be booking twice!

Girls Aloud was undoubtedly the girlband of my childhood as even now, I’d prefer them over Little Mix/Fifth Harmony etc. Nicolas album Cinderella’s Eyes also fared well with critics when it came out and as mentioned, her voice does stand out. Whilst this casting is a surprise, it will be interesting to see her acting skills and how she will be able to cope with 8 shows a week especially after some time outside of the spotlight. I initially became interested with Rosalie and Hadley reuniting then immediately booked after seeing Rob Houchen lined up and Vanessa Williams seemed like a good bonus too. Now with Nicola, it seems the Garrick stage door is calling my name xD

Theo James as Stone and Jonathan Slinger as Buddy. Interesting casting - but not really enough to set the box office alight I wouldn't have thought.

It’s a 6month run and would’ve expected them to push through it considering they’re headlining the show. Thankfully I’m going the night after press night so hoping to catch everyone

Rob I am more surprised by, unless he is u/s for Theo and will then take over the role and this is not being advertised.

Also worth noting, I saw a lady in public around 3 days ago with a company tote bag on, so I had to stop and gush to her over it. She said one of her good friends was part of the cast, didn't mention who, and that Rosalie was offered broadway but decided to stay at home with her daughter. And that all the cast urged Patti to do it without them when she was on the fence over it,
Appaz there is a cast group chat and it;s highly active!

I went to school with Theo (when his last name wasn't James!) and can confirm he can definitely sing - he never missed a chanced to who off in our house music competition
