According to Baz, the Crucible's Christmas musical this year is Kiss Me Kate starring Rebecca Lock as Lilli Vanessa and Edward Baker-Duly who is currently in The King and I as Fred.
Seems a popular title with the Opera North production that was at the Coliseum and on tour as well as the upcoming Broadway revival.

OK, so I am just a sad old man, but it annoys me when I see mistakes like this: Lilli Vanessi NOT Vanessa "Kiss Me, Kate" NOT "Kiss Me Kate"

That's great news. I always spend Christmas in Derbyshire so that's a good excuse to go.

OK, so I am just a sad old man, but it annoys me when I see mistakes like this: Lilli Vanessi NOT Vanessa "Kiss Me, Kate" NOT "Kiss Me Kate" Yes, Baz often makes little mistakes when posting his "news" out in haste! Though with the title of the show, he's using it as a hashtag which means it can be found by anyone also using or searching that hashtag. If he included the comma into the title, that would break up the hashtag and wouldn't "work" properly. Whether he would use the comma if he wasn't hashtagging the show's title is another matter!

Actually, my complaint is more directed at what appears in this thread, especially its heading, rather than what Baz has tweeted.

Don't worry, tonyloco. I can confirm that Sheffield Theatres know it's Kiss Me, Kate. (Though it did struggle with Caryl Churchill.) For the record, although this casting news is...new, the actual production was announced earlier in the year, and tickets have been on sale since March!

Yes, if there's something I have learnt after working for fifty years for EMI it's that the show is called "KISS ME (comma) KATE" and that "SHOW BOAT" is two words!

No, I'd wager that Tony's life has had meaning for all of his 81 years. That's probably why he's held in such high regard, by so many.

Isn't Rebecca Lock in 'Heathers'? She's not going to have much time after the transfer to get herself all the way up to The North.

Someone posted in the Heathers thread when the transfer was announced that Rebecca would be leaving early (beginning of November) - I imagine she’ll be going straight from Heathers to rehearsals

Saw this last night - second performance - and despite loads of mistakes, it was really good.
Great performances from the whole company and some really really good dancing and choreography. The chorus numbers are terrific - athletic and classic.
Biggest surprise of the night was how good a dancer Dex Lee was - he was brilliant! Somersaults and everything... I also loved Amy Ellen Richardson as Lois. Between them, they have the best smiles in theatreland!
Wigs fell off, props were missing, Petruchio fell over, some scenery nearly hit a cast member, loads of lines were missed (especially in the Shakespeare section) & Rebecca Lock had to restart a song and it was 3 hours long!
But I still went home smiling and singing! A great reception from the (very busy) audience too!
It’s a proper ‘classic’ musical done really well.

I agree with the above, I also saw it last night, an insanely enjoyable musical, that has an eleven o’clock number to rival ‘sit down your rocking the boat’ from the great Guys and Dolls, in ‘know your Shakespeare’ if this doesn’t get your feet tapping you have probably died.
Even with the 3 hours and mistakes made as pointed out above, this is the type of musical you can get away with it, ‘We Open in Venice is one of my all time musical number favourites - ‘Tom, Dick and Harry,’ ‘I Hate Men’ and ‘Too Darn Hot’ are also great musical numbers.
Well if this show doesn’t give you a kiss, it will certainly give you a great big hug.
4 Stars

It is one of the best scores of all time. Classic after classic. Yes, it is a long show - but the quality and story justifies it.
One I would love to direct at some point

This may be common knowledge, but they've released two additional rows of seats at the front of the stage.
There's a link from the main Kiss Me Kate page on the Crucible website to book them (if you use the main link to book seats, the extra rows don't show).
Look to all be priced at £15. Managed to grab a front row seat over the Christmas period.
Just raising this in case anyone has booked the "old" front row and will now find they're in the third row. I know how annoying it is when that happens to me.
Also, there's very good availability for those seats, which makes me think that most people haven't cottoned on yet.

I'm obviously broken, because I was bored and looking at my watch a lot. There were some decent songs, and I liked So Darn Hot (although I have no clue what Layton Williams was singing) but there were quite a few songs that could have been cut imo, and I have no idea what happened at the end because I couldn't hear any of the lady's lyrics in that last song. I thought the story was dreadful. The cast were good, and really gave it their all, but I didn't find it particularly funny, and couldn't name one of the characters now.

Thanks for the prompt, Dr Tom. I've just changed my original Row A seat, which almost backstage, for Row BB.

I really didn't like the story at all. And was it meant to be funny that the woman got spanked for arguing with her ex?

Thank you! Just booked one.
There appears to still be at least a few of these seats available for all but two performances. The route to them is fairly easy to find if you know what you're looking for, but not necessarily obvious if you don't. Follow the instructions above and you'll get there - and it's worth the effort, the seats directly behind these rows are three times the price at the performance I booked.

It was meant to be funny... in 1948.
Today, the material presents some difficulties - but so does The Taming of the Shrew.

Kiss Me Kate is one of those musicals I've never seen, mainly because I've never been sold on the subject matter.
I saw it last night at the Crucible and I'm glad I gave it a chance. It's enjoyable.
It really isn't particularly memorable and it's long (2 hours 55 minutes) but the cast gave it their all and the Crucible was full.
I can tell people weren't enjoying it. I had an excellent bargain front row centre seat, but had people next to me who didn't applaud at all, and kept seeing a family on the front row at the side whose two jogging suit clad sons were so bored they were barely looking at the stage. But at least they were well behaved.
The two leads, Edward Baker-Duly and Rebecca Lock were excellent. Great to see Edward in a meaty role and showing off his fine voice compared to his small role in The King and I (to be reprised on tour next year). Most of the other roles are quite small.
Also good to see Simon Oskarsson in the ensemble and showing his trumpet playing skills during his solos in Too Darn Hot. But not on roller skates like the last time I saw him.
Another good Crucible winter musical. It's not a show I'll rush back to, but that's just because there are so many better classic musicals out there. But it's performed as well as it can be without going through one of those of trendy rewrites of the book.

But it's performed as well as it can be without going through one of those of trendy rewrites of the book. Well, actually... I don't see it myself until Wednesday, but I believe this version uses the script from the 1999 Broadway revival, which included significant (uncredited) rewrites by John Guare and Michael Blakemore. "From This Moment On" is in this version of the show, right? It's not in the original script or score.

I remember thinking about the Carpenters version when it was being performed. So I presume this is the 1999 Broadway version.
