I will happily pay for someone else's ticket (yes, even a £95 ticket) if they take me as their +1. I mean, obviously I will be entering the ballot myself, but honestly, I NEED to see this, so if everyone who is not especially bothered can please enter for me?? If I don't win the ballot I will go out of my mind knowing this is happening and I can't see it.... I hate f****** ballots!! God this is going to be so stressful! I think I'm hyperventilating already! If I win then I'll certainly take you up on this!

I've been wanting to see Hiddleston do Hamlet for years - hell I've wanted to see a Branagh-directed stage-Hamlet for years, I booked for the Donmar West End production he pulled out of. It was my first big ridiculously-far-in-advance ticket booking as a theatre geek! This is driving me crazy - it's finally here and there's no way I can guarantee myself a ticket! No amount of time queuing or frantic booking-screen refreshing or money I can pay. No savvy regular theatre-goer tricks I can use. There's 21 performances in a 160 seat theatre. Only 3360 tickets. They're not filming it. Odds are I'm not going to get to see it. Oh kathryn, fret ye not. In the (almost) words of that great philosopher George Michael, " I want your s, 'cause you gotta have faith, you gotta have faith, 'cause you gotta have faith, faith, 'cause you gotta have faith-ah, faith-ah, faith-AH". Wise words. Of course he could have been high on marijuana in a motorway lay-by at the time. Anyway. Wise words. Ah, Ryan, you do make me laugh. I know I'm ridiculous. I need to calm down. But, damn.

Oh what a shame....Mark Shenton twittered/bitched that there are no guaranteed tickets for critics for this.

Was going to ask if I'm the only one not bothered, but the answer is clearly yes! Then I have no doubts that all those people who are bothered and want to see Hiddles in Hamlet will no doubt thank you for your choosing not to enter the ballot and giving them all a slightly better chance of winning. I never win anything so not sure I'm helping but I'll send good thoughts to you all!

LOL. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens with reviews. I suppose one of the professionals is bound to end up with a ticket somehow...

I'm not gonna pay £95 for this, but I'll have a go for £45 That reminds me of a date I once had with a leading member of the RSC who shall remain nameless. It was a complete misunderstanding from both sides but . . .

I think I'm hyperventilating already! You may well be getting lots of chances to go at this rate! Another possible offer here as I don't think anyone else I know will want to pay £95. Or even £45! Having said that, 5 Angels in America ballots and absolutely nothing. So I have no ballot luck. Or maybe it's my turn I do understand the frustration that some people feel with ballots but given the choice of that or getting online at certain o' clock, refreshing, queuing, website crashing, more queuing, and finally no ticket, I'd probably prefer the ballot. Anyway, good luck all

It annoys me in general when big stars appear in venues that are too small for the demand which excludes non-members, the noncognoscenti, and non-theatre goers who might otherwise take a punt on a new experience but to call this a fundraiser and then restrict it to 160 tickets per performance is taking the piss. And I'm not even bothered about seeing Tom Hiddleston so it's not sour grapes.

Hmm, been thinking about this, and I reckon it's very much a 'plan b' situation.
Branagh says they've been talking about doing Hamlet together for 7 years. I suspect they weren't talking about doing it as a 3-week fundraiser all that time, but they were talking about a Hamlet who was reasonably young - certainly under 40. I reckon they had planned a full run but realised, comparing diaries, that they just not going to have the time to do it together in the next few years, and ended up finding a way to still be able to do it together if only for a tiny amount of time. The fundraising aspect is a way of justifying it.
In fact, I'm wondering if a full 3 month run was on the cards for this year, until Marvel changed their filming schedule. Originally they announced that they were going to film the next 2 Avengers films simultaneously, over the first 6 months of this year. Rumour has it that Hiddleston was to be involved something like March to July. Then they realised that the scheduling was impossible, and changed to doing the 2 films back to back - Avengers Infinity War wrapped a couple of weeks ago, then everyone has a few weeks off, then they start filming Avengers 4 between September and February next year. Hiddleston may well be needed in fits and starts across that period, which is what seemed to happen with Infinity War.

I'd be inclined to agree with that Kathryn- they've talked about it long enough that I suspect this might be a 'f*** it just do it' measure. BUT I'd be very surprised if it doesn't reappear in another configuration at another point...just an unfortunately further off point. (Curses Avengers)

I hope so, Emi! My fear is that they've done it this way because it's their only foreseeable way to do it together.
It's a hell of a lot of work for a 3-week run, and a tiny audience - they've probably already spent longer working it than they'll spend performing it. Surely they'd want to transfer it if at all possible? I pray to the theatre gods that we'll see it elsewhere - Hiddleston has nothing announced to film past Feb 2018, but of course that doesn't mean he's got nothing booked. I'm not sure what Branagh's schedule looks like.

Do we need another Hamlet so soon after the well received one with Andrew Scott? Perhaps that will affect their future plans in the short term too?

I knew Branagh wouldn't resist... ))
Will be interesting to hear the reviews on this - on one hand, I rate Mr Hiddleston highly and believe Hamlet is up his street and he's certainly been doing it in his head for a long time. But will it be a coherent, inventive, thought through production as a whole? For now, it looks like the rest of the cast has just been called in, they probably won't have enough time to rehearse and yes, we all know the reason behind the show... Foundraising, which is lovely, important cause, but will anyone who end up in the audience care about anything else except one of the most popular British actors giving his Dane? I don't know. Might be good, might be a waste. Certainly will be intimate and curious at least.
Good luck to those who entered the ballot!

I gave up and refreshed the page, but now am not sure whether I managed to sign up or not. Am I supposed to get a confirmation email?

I entered OH's details and it came back quick as a flash, with a thank you. Annoying because he won't look out on his emails for the response. I will have to ask.....every day....every hour..... Actually when does the ballot announce?

Will be interesting to hear the reviews on this - It'll be especially interesting because they're not having a press night and inviting critics - the only way professional critics will get in is being lucky in the ballot or knowing/bribing someone who is!

Kenneth Branagh's return to Shakespeare after more than a decade was the Manchester International Festival production of Macbeth which played in an intimate venue, Hallé St Peter’s, for less than three weeks, from 5 - 23 July 2013. The final Saturday performance was relayed live to 5,000 people in the NCP Bridgewater Hall Car Park and shown more widely by NT Live. There was a New York revival a year later, from 31 May - 22 June 2014 at Park Avenue Armory, who had co-commissioned the production with MIF. mif.co.uk/about-us/our-story/mif13/macbeth/I love the concept of these event theatre productions. Perhaps the Hiddleston/Branagh/RADA Hamlet might follow the Macbeth model of life beyond its initial production.

I'd forgotten that Macbeth had such a short run. I'll cross my fingers for a short transfer somewhere that they manage to film for NT Live. That may be more feasible than a proper long run transfer. I was theorising yesterday that maybe one of the reasons why there's no plan to film it is that the tech is being done by RADA students on the technical courses, and it's a bit much for them to take on NT Live requirements too. But a short transfer to a professional venue wouldn't face that problem.

It's reported in today's Times that Kenny first floated the idea with Tommy 10 years ago (rather than seven) after watching him in Othello at the Donmar Warehouse.
Anybody struggling to register online can also enter the ballot by telephone (remember those) on 01223 357851.

Do we need another Hamlet so soon after the well received one with Andrew Scott? Perhaps that will affect their future plans in the short term too? I've never been bothered by different productions of a play happening in quick succession. If they occur in the same city, it gets noticed, but London's big enough to absorb a couple of close-together Hamlets.
In a sense, no play is ever 'needed'.

Yes. It's the sort of thing critics moan about because they do see them all, but most people don't go and see every production of Hamlet. None of us is being forced to go - and you know that when the time comes that people stop buying tickets for Hamlet producers will stop putting them on.
