The Sun or Daily Hate Mail It was more wide ranging than the Sun etc (who have actually just added a line in another item they did at the weekend to the effect that she has done stage work - I presume someone must have pointed it out to them!). If they can look up IMDB (as they presumably did for the Call the Midwife reference) why don't they just look up her Spotlight profile or just spend 30 secs googling her name before telling their readers she's only done one thing? She's been the lead in several productions (and the saving grace of Aykbourn's The Divide) and was Billington's pick of the year. It's just weird that referring to - or even considering - their stage work doesn't seem to enter the profilers' heads.

I think it's absolutely fair to focus on what the TV audiences may have seen, and Call The Midwife does reach a sizeable portion of the population, but if the filmed side of things is a little scant, then it's lazy journalism to not do a quick google. I found Erin Doherty's Spotlight page VERY quickly, and even if searching their name doesn't turn much up, "[actor name] agent" is a pretty good way to find a detailed CV, and then instead of putting "where might you have seen this actor before? lol just one episode of Call the Midwife" and leaving it there, you can also put "but she's done a good amount of stage work too, at theatres such as the Vics Old, Young, and Bristol". If you're a journalist writing an article and you can't bring yourself to do a little searching around - not just seeing if they have a Wikipedia entry and calling it a day if they don't - then yeah, you're a lazy journalist.

There isn’t a theatre equivalent of IMDB for journalists to consult. Spotlight. I just looked hers up. It took me all of 6 seconds. A newspaper would also presumably have IMDB Pro which would give them instant access to the actor's agent's name and PR agency, if they have one.

I think it's absolutely fair to focus on what the TV audiences may have seen I understand that - what some of the articles seemed to imply was that was the only thing she'd done: that she was someone with little acting experience rather than, on stage, a leading actress.

Spotlight isn't *super* accessible to plebs. It used to be more open, but these days you either have to have an account or have a direct link to an actor's page. That said, if you're a major enough publication with a decent amount of entertainment output, then it would be a very reasonable investment to make.

Which you will see I agreed with, assuming you read the rest of the post you quoted and didn't just glom in on the first line and leave it there!

a couple of roles at the Old Vic Do a longer Google - award-winning in Wish List in Manchester and the Royal Court, touring in Jack Thorne's musical Junkyard, The Divide in Edinburgh and the Old Vic, Rachel Corrie at the Young Vic, Jack Thorne's Christmas Carol. Unusually for a young actor in this day and age, she doesn't promote herself on social media at all, though Billington talks about her a lot!

Spotlight isn't *super* accessible to plebs. Hers comes up instantly though: google her name and it's included on her BOV profile link. Newspapers would have IMDB Pro.

didn't just glom in on the first line I did read your whole post! I think maybe, as well as laziness, there is an issue where some journalists try to promote a 'fairy tale' impression to their readers about success. When Katherine Soper won the Bruntwood Prize, headlines were 'shop girl wins major prize'. As she painstakingly pointed out, she's a Cambridge English graduate who then did an MA in playwriting. Articles on Riz Ahmed would say he only managed to study drama thanks to a kindly benefactor, as though he were a Dickensian orphan - in fact, as he himself said to an interviewer who repeated this on radio, he'd already done a PPE degree at Christ Church, Oxford.

It doesn’t come up instantly for me. In fact I never get Spotlight turn up as a result on the first results page when I Google anyone, just IMDB. I assume that’s tailored search results at work. Yes, newspapers should have IMDB Pro but freelancers wouldn’t necessarily have access it. Of course entertainment journalists should *try* to do better....

Yes, that is true. You also have to consider the source - the tabloids tend to be very good on the soaps but know sod-all about film and theatre. Of course, they do know their audience - who are mainly TV viewers and not cinema- or theatre-goers. There’s a reason why the actors they tip to be the next Bond have always just been in a highly-rated TV series - they’re typically the actors their readers know about!

I never get Spotlight turn up as a result on the first results page when I Google anyone No, it wasn't Spotlight (which never seems to come up directly) but the first thing that came up for her, after The Crown news stories, was her BOV Theatre School page and these almost always have Spotlight links. Agency pages with CVs often come up high in the Google running order for actors too. Then there's the other extreme, I suppose: I saw a Guardian writer tweet this this week: "Daily press release arrives: here is an actress we represent and an impressive list of shows she’s starred in. Please put her in your publication. See attached photos for how nice she looks in just her pants."

someone from The Sun or Daily Hate Mail Turns out the Guardian is the worst offender - a really mean spirited piece by one of their TV reviewers Stuart Heritage. Jack Thorne and others have taken to Twitter about it.

Jack Thorne and others have taken to Twitter about it. I've only quickly glanced at that article but I'm not sure I can really see what is so particularly mean spirited about it. It's usual TV fluff stuff. And it really isn't untrue that Erin Doherty is probably the least known to the general TV viewing public (as good as she may be) and that Princess Anne is not a particularly interesting character (other than the kidnap attempt). Hell I'm pretty sure that many a theatre goer might struggle to pick Erin out of a lineup. If she's so good in The Crown then people will pick up on that and she'll become the breakout star, just like Vanessa Kirby.

It's Stuart Heritage, so if it's not overtly mean-spirited in this specific instance, it's worth bearing in mind that he is reasonably mean-spirited on a fairly regular basis, so it's not hard to read it in all of his articles once you know it's always there somewhere, no matter how low-key.

Most of the Gruan’s tv coverage is fairly mean-spirited - even when they are writing about the shows their readers clearly enjoy! They can’t wait to pillory stuff.
I think they’ve never quite gotten over middle-class snobbery about watching tv, so they always have to slightly sneer at it.

what is so particularly mean spirited about it. He doesn't bother to find anything out about two upcoming young actors but rates their casting as 2 out of 5. As Jack Thorne points out, some young people could be really hurt by that - especially when he then goes and rates Helena B-C as 7/5 .

I'm sure most actors have been used to far worse than whether some nobody in an online article (that could be called 'lightweight' at best) rates them as 3/5 alongside Ben Daniels. So he hasn't bothered to find out anything about Erin Doherty? That (and more) happens pretty regularly with other actors on this very forum too and we're all supposed to love theatre. The article is rubbish but I still can't really see why people are so particularly sensitive about this one. All he's saying is that she's the least known of the announced cast (which is true) and even Jack Thorne calls her a "hidden secret". I'm sure she'll be marvellous. If she can make Princess Anne interesting then she'll be sensational.

Chimerica and David Copperfield (Armando Iannucci-scripted film) casts now up on IMDB. Ben Whishaw as Uriah Heep! Looking forward to seeing him as a baddie again after all that Paddington and Mary Poppins.

Milly Thomas' Dust (Soho Theatre, Trafalgar Studios) is being adapted for TV, which is great news - it really deserves a wider audience.

The entire box set of Informer is now on BBC is on iPlayer and as well as Sharon D Clarke being her usual amazing self, Rachel Tucker appears in four episodes (main appearances in episodes four and five). I loved this whole series.

If you're wanting some Dickens for these dark nights, Christine Edzard's 1988 Little Dorrit is now on Netflix - amazing cast: Derek Jacobi, Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood, Max Wall etc.
