I watched the promo on YouTube and thought “no thanks”.

Oh god! I'm going tomorrow!!!! You may very well completely disagree! It wouldn’t be the first time. But I really can’t find anything good to say about what I saw, except that the sound levels were fine and it started on time.

A long time ago my parents gave me a sage piece of advice - which anti-social media users should adhere to.
"If you've nothing good to say, it's best to say nothing at all".
So, regarding this show, I have nothing to say.

Would love to know if my musings were too harsh in hindsight - and if you could recognise the issues I had with it?

Just came back from this and thought it was quite wonderful. Absolutely nothing about the minimal set or overall staging bothered me, I thought it was all quite pretty in its simplicity.
Performances were great, some very funny and you couldn't fault the enthusiasm of the cast. Really good choreography too.
Was a shame to see the theatre so empty but those there seemed to be really enjoying themselves. I think the cast were relieved they got a good curtain call.

I’m watching this at the Lowry at the end of the month. I’m sure Mark Anderson is in it who played the Toxic Avenger at the SWP/ARTS a while back. I’m hoping he is the saving grace for this show.

He was off tonight, for which I was grateful because the swing that went on for the actor who was Mr. Anderson's understudy was tasty.

How was Wendi Peters as I actually enjoyed her performance in the recent Wonderland tour with Kerry Ellis?

Mark Anderson is playing Timothy the male lead in this but unfortunately was off the night I say the show, his part being played by his understudy Lewis McBean.

Has anyone seen both this production & the Tete a Tete (sorry, can't do the accents on my phone) one that was on at the Riverside Studios a few years ago? I really loved the piece when I saw it then, ended up seeing it 5 times over the 2 runs, so I'd quite like to see it again but at the same time I don't want my memories of that production spoilt if this new one isn't as good.

Yes. The Tête-à-tête version is superior, but I very much enjoyed this at The Union last year. One thing in common with the earlier production is that they play it pretty straight and resist the inclination to camp it up. I'm not the best person to comment on this though as I'm strangely besotted by this ridiculous bonkers musical. I was thinking of catching this in Guildford; although I think it would work better in a smaller space than the YA.

The Tete one was fabulous, which is why I am holding back on this one

The Riverside Studios production was excellent.

I enjoyed it at the Riverside too.
It is a piece that I have always loved. It is utterly silly and delightfully charming. It makes no pretence at being high art. It is hard to get the tone right in our more cynical age.
It was never intended to be anything other than a piece of froth - and that is why I do love it.
I can see how people might find it twee or irritating.
Now for a revival of Bless the Bride... please?

Thanks tmesis. I'll have to think about it. It's not coming near me & it sounds like it may not be worth travelling for, if I've already seen a better production.

I have a fondness for this daft show. The simple melodic songs have an irritating way of getting into your head! "I sit in the sun" and "I am look, look looking for a piano"! I agree. I saw a production at the Vaudeville many years ago (1996 -- Kit and the Widow et. al.; directed by Ned Sherrin) and still hum the songs from the show. I enjoy listening to the CD of an earlier production. I live in New York -- we don't often get these charming British musicals.

Has anybody else been to see this? I decided to bite the bullet and see it in Coventry last night. I wasn't expecting great things based on the reviews here but as it's a musical I knew absolutely nothing about, I went in with as blank a slate as possible and I actually quite enjoyed it! Yes it's twee and quaint and dated and not massively memorable but I've seen far, far worse. I didn't leave at the interval and I usually do if I can't take any more. I found I was smiling and my feet were tapping along. The cast do a good job (Wendi Peters now apparently only does shows where she's in 10 minutes of each act). Averagely enjoyable harmless fluff I'd say 😀

Smaller furniture was just brought on and off as needed. It was a shame to see the theatre so empty though (barely a third full I'd say and the circle was closed. The woman next to me said she'd never seen it so empty.

After watching the final night tonight at Salford’s Lowry theatre, all I can say is that this is a completely bonkers musical. I thought the cast where great and Wendi Peters gave a great comic turn as various characters, but the whole thing was just wierd, particularly the ending. It was definitely theatrical fluff and something that didn’t require any intellectual thought whatsoever.
The musical score while fun (especially the act 2 number Sand in my eyes) twas something I wouldn’t want to listen to again.
Overall, a fun night out, but a musical I probably wouldn’t watch again if it ever got revived in the future.
