That is the other thing, she is 91 and Philip is 95, if she wants a sit down and a cup of tea on a cruise she really has earned it! My Mum was relieved when a death wasn't announced, she says Philip is her favourite, always smiling, never says anything, doesn't bother anyone, just goes about his day.

I think it's wonderful watching the tabloids' websites desperately trying to outdo each other in their attempts to find something to say.

Your mum is right, except he says things like "slit eyes". The Duke said to Tom Jones after a Royal Variety Performance: "What do you gargle with, pebbles?". The Duke famously proclaimed: "British women can't cook". But his best must be, when talking about Princess Anne "If it doesn't fart or eat hay then she isn't interested". So yes, he just goes about his day!!!!!

One would not be amused if one was woken for that.

Indeed. Well at least it means there's still hope to get one's hooks into Harry?

Funny to watch the media/social media getting so worked up over something so utterly banal.
Whatever you think of old Phil, he *is* 95. He's put in more than enough time and is entitled to a bit of retirement.

Wasn't that just a pre-death announcement? Today he's stepping down, next week he will be dead? He wasted his life, bet he's gutted

Prince Philip to step down from carrying out royal engagements in the autumn
Jeremy Corbyn to step down from destroying the Labour Party on June 9?

From what I've read it was the Daily Mail that really blew up the whole 'emergency meeting', when it's more likely that this would have been planned at least a few days in advance.
Also, I'm pretty sure No10 does the announcement when The Queen dies (I remember talking to a friend about it when TM called the press conference for the GE)
Honestly though, this was pretty much expected

Also, I'm pretty sure No10 does the announcement when The Queen dies It would certainly be newsworthy if the Queen called a meeting to announce her own death. No matter who announces it, for a year or two afterwards our national anthem will begin "God save our gracious QuKing".

You know what I mean, it was more for future reference, it's No10 and not the palace that will make that kind of announce - though I do wonder if No10 would also announce Phillip's death.

I believe Martin Crimp has been inspired to write "The Announcement". Royal officials from across the UK (used to symbolise different UK communities) are summoned to the Palace to persuade Prince Philip to retire. As they struggle behind closed doors, outside the World waits expectantly not knowing what the future will hold. Will our lives change forever?

Yeah, I remember that, but I didn't read through all the plans. Clearly, my friend was (yet again) mistaken. I'm just hoping that now that Phillip is officially retiring, Kate and William might take on a few more royal jobs

Most theatres shut for Diana, didn't they - and the few that stayed open "donated to charity." So, anything could happen. The funeral was in central London on Saturday early afternoon. I seem to remember that a lot of matinees were cancelled on that day. Probably due to a misunderstanding that the theatre critic of the Daily Telegraph was inciting anti-monarchist revolution in the address.

I think I'm the only one who would rather see Charles as King than William.
