I reckon Ross Noble will cancel out the Hamilton boys in that Supporting Actor In A Musical category - Cleve was good, though surprised he was nominated over George Washington. I think most people leave remembering Michael Jibson's performance though! I did not see Groff. But saw the book of mormon guy. I know he got a tony award. name escapes me sorry. he was really good and if he originated it he would have been nominated.

The Olivier noms really are beyond the pale these days. The producers who bleat the loudest (and are the best connected) get the noms. On the evidence of this list you'd think HAMILTON, FOLLIES, and THE FERRYMAN were more or less the only shows that played London all season. Don't get me started on the list of omissions which, to start with, would include David Seadon-Young, Clare Halse, Conleth Hill, Andrew Polec, Tamsin Greig (twice), etc etc etc --- and how Ciaran Hinds got a nom and Quast and Forbes didn't is VERY strange, however much one likes the idea of spreading the wealth. Oh well, not worth worrying about. Their credibility vanished ages ago.

As are some of the omissions for Hamilton. Some of the non nominees make more sense than the nominees. In all fairness ferryman is too a good show. but I have always found them to be weird

I am so happy about Rachel john confused about Rachel Ann Go Rachelle was no more than average when I saw it and her diction was poor. She's improved a lot since then but as far as I'm concerned she didn't deserve a nomination. Rachel, on the other hand, stole the show. I'll be surprised if she wins though. Delighted if she does, but I won't be expecting it even though I think the Imelda vote will be split...

In a strong year there are always going to be omissions.

Prediction - Hamilton will win virtually everything!
I do hope John McCrea wins for Jamie but he's up against Giles and Jamael (head to head) in Hamilton - we shall see. It is SO subjective - I may have to lie down in a darkened room to calm down!

42nd Street really doesn't have much of a set. It has a few flat backdrops and a huge staircase at the end. And because of that staircase and big production number you come out thinking how amazing it was. But that staircase has been in EVERY production of 42nd Street that has ever existed, so there's really nothing new or innovative about it. People who are only seeing for the first time might think it's amazing, but it's all been done before.

I think its a good set of noms. And fairly evenly spread - in the fact that everything that deserved things got things (although some omissions) Surprised Imelda was nominated for Follies - she was my least favourite of the 4 leads, which leads me to say WHY ON EARTH WASNT QUAST NOMINATED?! I think/hope Giles will win best actor - I thought he was sensational. Jamael is serviceable in my opinion, and plays the part well, but I wasn't bowled over. Rachel John I'm thrilled for, but Tracie Bennett needs to win that category... And Rachelle Ann was never going to get nominated. She sings like a dream - with some peculair diction at times, but shes no actress (dont get me wrong, I love her, but there was no way).
The one I'm msot baffled by was Clare Halse not getting a nomination! 42nd Street deserved more than it got I think, but Clare not getting nominated was a travesty! And I also think Conleth Hill should have been for Virginia Woolf, but that best actor category is hard enough without putting him in the mix!
Follies, Hamilton and Angels in America all doing well with noms has pleased me, as they were my favourite 3 things of last year.

For all the dodgy nominations and missed nominations, the one I was most pleasantly surprised to see was La Boheme at Trafalgar Studios 2. A good show that could so easily have been over-shadowed by bigger productions.

Hamilton will win big but I don't know if it will take as many awards as some are expecting. It can only win 10 awards. There is a chance, because the two lead males got great reviews, they cancel eachother out and John McCrea wins. And votes are gonna split between those three Supporting Actors as evidenced by their nominations, there is passion for all three. I'd guess Jason will win, but I can see Ross winning over all three. Costumes is a tricky one, but if they are gonna give 42nd Street an award that may be it, as they have about 10 costumes per person, they are all stunning and really bright and have wow factor. And Choreography too is a tricky one as Hamilton is movement all the way through, as is American in Paris, but 42nd Street is big numbers, so it depends really what is preferred.
I don't imagine it is going to be a clear sweep for Hamilton this year, but I imagine it will match Matilda's record of most wins for a musical.

Just picked up on two more egregious omissions... the unfathomable one being Romantics Anonymous for best new musical, which could have replaced most of the nominees. I’d also have put Carly Bawden in best actress in a musical but more difficult to find a place. For some reason I'd assumed it wasn't eligible, but I was mistaken. Yes, absolutely, and I could also have made a good case for a nomination for Dominic Marsh in place of Ciaran Hinds.

Going through them last night I had Hamilton at six, so just short of Matilda; with a fair wind I think it's quite likely to match it, though. I think it may miss out on Best Director (an absolutely stacked category), Best Sound Design (a toss up with Network but the clarity of Hamilton is no mean feat across the auditorium and at that volume), Lighting Design (similarly with Network, which is much showier) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Atim or maybe Bennett but Bennett has a song and barely any lines, maybe less than ten).

Yes, absolutely, and I could also have made a good case for a nomination for Dominic Marsh in place of Ciaran Hinds. Romantic Anonymous was definitely eligible (according to the Oliviers Wedsite). Its omission was the most disappointing thing amongst the nominations in the musicals category for me. Personally I'd like to have seen it and Toxic Avenger nominated with Jamie and Hamilton. The fact that RA got no nominations at all is very surprising - as IMO, it was one of the most wonderful surprises from London theatre last year - I really hope it gets transferred and seen by a wider audience (especially as I believe the run was pretty much sold out) I was surprised not to see the Phil Quast and Andrew Polec not nominated for best actor, as much as I loved Hamilton and thought it was be a country mile the highlight of 2017, I though individually their performances (aside from the lead in 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie' (sorry his name escapes me)) were stronger than those playing either Hamilton or Burr. Hamilton I'm sure will (and deserves) win best musical and most of the production awards (lighting, sound, score etc.), but I hope Janie Dee wins Best Actress, and Ross Noble Best Supporting Actor (the best thing in a average show)

I've heard great things about Network and the design of that show, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that one take a couple of design catagories.
Slightly surprised at the lack of Bat Out of Hell. I've heard the show itself is flawed, but the design is great!

Hamilton will win best new musical, achievement in music for Lin, best actor in a musical, best supporting actor and actress in a musical, best director, best choreography and all the design awards it's up for. I don't think there'll be much wealth-spreading this year. Best Actress in a Musical should go to Dee, but there can often be the weirdest winners as we've seen in the past. I remember in 2013, Jenna Russell seemed to be the frontrunner to win Best Actress for her devastating Mary in Merrily We Roll Along but it went to the girl from Once. So, that category could go any way this year. I think Staunton will win for Virginia Woolf.

I'm usually really disappointed by the Olivier Award nominations, but this year I've been quite happy with the chosen nominees. Of course, there are a few puzzling decisions (after all, they are still the Olivier's), but overall I've been very pleased with these nominations. There are a few decisions that I disagree with, but on the whole it seems to be quite a good list!
The Positives: -Obviously, I'm thrilled for the Hamilton nominations. Jamael Westman, Rachel John and Jason Penycooke were among my favourite performances of the year, and I am rooting for them to win in their respective categories. -Very happy for the Follies love. I thought both Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton were both phenomenal, so glad to see they were both nominated. -Over the moon to see that Ink picked up a few nominations. Ink one of only two plays that I gave a 5 star rating to (the other was Harry Potter), so glad to see it got the recognition it deserves. -The nominations for An American in Paris were a very pleasant surprise. I thought it might be snubbed, so I was ecstatic to see that it picked up a few nominations. -Also glad to see Follies, Jamie, 42nd Street, Young Frankenstein, Oslo and Dick Whittington pick up a few nominations! All of those were excellent and very worthy of all of the nominations that they received. -It was nice to see Paul Brown being recognised for his work on Iolanthe. For those that didn't know, Brown passed away in November last year. Luckily, his legacy has lived on.
The Negatives: -Where was Obioma Ugoala?! He is arguably the best supporting actor in all of Hamilton, and that seems to be a fairly popular opinion, so why was he snubbed? I quite liked both Michael Jibson and Cleve September, but neither of them were anywhere near as good as Obioma Ugoala. -I personally feel that The Grinning Man should have been nominated over Girl From The North Country for the Outstanding Achievement in Music. I haven't see Girl From The North Country yet, but surely an original score should be nominated over a jukebox musical? -A little sad to see David Tennant (Don Juan), Richard Coyle (Ink), Tamsin Greig (Labour of Love) and Anne-Marie Duff (Heisenberg) not receive nominations. In all fairness though, I haven't seen any of the other nominees in those two categories (Best Leading Actor in a Play and Best Leading Actress in a Play), so I'm probably not the best person to be commenting on those categories. Additionally, I know I was in a minority that actually liked Tennant's performance in Don Juan, so not quite as surprised about that one than Coyle and Greig being snubbed. -Didn't realise this was eligible originally, but after reading that it is, I'm a little surprised to see no nominations for Lady Windermere's Fan (particularly for Samantha Spiro and Jennifer Saunders).

I have seen many Olivier Award Winning and Tony Winning Musicals. Hamilton is the best musical I have ever seen. I have seen Matilda, Fun Home, Billy Elliott and whole lot more. And will have to say Hamilton blows them out of the water. Its almost 3 hours. And to have a book that is so well written. And to have well drawn humans is an achievement. There is not a lot of cliche and villains in the musical. King George is the closest to a villain. There is a lot of humanity in the musical.

So on this boring Sunday afternoon, done a rundown of some of the catagories and tried to work out what will win/could win/should win. Some are off hype as I haven't seen them all, but this is what I could personally see happening, going by what will actually happen and not what I want to happen (as will be clear haha) and some of them are obviously shakey ground because of Hamilton but gut instinct.

Just received my ticket for the ceremony in the post, and notice it says black tie dress code. Does anyone who has been before know how strictly they enforce this dress code? I'm surprised there's a dress code even for the commoners up in the circle!

It's ironic really as many of the male stars attending don't conform to this at all. I'm going and will probably be wearing a black tie of some sort but not the full penguin suit!!

It will not be a clean sweep. As Bob the designer for AIP is a great designer

Any news yet on performers on the show? I know that Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be performing ‘Don’t Even Know It’ As for the other shows, I would have thought Hamilton will do one of the usual performances such as ‘Alexander Hamilton’ or ‘Yorktown’

From what I've heard from some (having not seen Hamilton), Rachelle is the weak link in the cast anyway and Christine isn't in a role that attracts awards notice. If both of them got in as well as those nominated and the Supporting Actor who wasn't nominated that alot of people think should of been, all the eyes would be rolling at Hamilton's nine acting nominations.*
*not a critique of Hamilton, a critique of the idea of a show actually getting nine acting nominations and all the performers that would potentially miss out.

I've seen it twice and agree Rachelle's performance isn't nomination-worthy (though she was a lot better second time round). I think the Supporting Actor nominations went to the wrong people.
