I've finally tried the much-discussed-on-here M&S lemon and lime jaffa cakes. I'm afraid I didn't like them. I try not to throw away too much food but I'm afraid nine-tenths of the packet will shortly be hitting a bin in Euston Travelodge, as one was more than enough. (NB I do like regular jaffa cakes.) Theatremonkey will be along to rescue them shortly

On the one hand, I do find it irritating that if I buy, say, a pair of gloves online, the internet assumes that's now my favourite hobby and shows me endless ads for gloves. But on the other hand, I find it fairly reassuring. If the robots aren't bright enough to watch me buy a pair of gloves and conclude that I am now good for gloves, they're probably not bright enough to rise up against us yet. You wear a pair of gloves on each hand? I'll close the door on my way out..

So-called targeted advertising can be weird. On another site I routinely get advertisements for horse feed despite never having owned a horse. Amazon keeps recommending bass guitars, Monster High books and vacuum cleaners. I've never bought a guitar or a Monster High book. I did once buy a vacuum cleaner so they got that right, but now they seem to think I collect them for a hobby. What gets me is being invited to go somewhere I have just been (why would I want to go straight back within hours of returning home?) or buying something I have just purchased. Obviously the computer generated programme doesn't incorporate the commonsense gene! Or that you'll want to book a hotel room for the place that you currently are in, which is usually where you already live.

Obviously the computer generated programme doesn't incorporate the commonsense gene! Or that you'll want to book a hotel room for the place that you currently are in, which is usually where you already live. Booking.com drives me nuts with that. They keep sending me emails with "Rooms in X are now cheaper! Treat yourself with a trip to Y!" when I have long booked a hotel there (and been and returned). Surely their system should notice when someone has booked a stay somewhere and send emails about places that have been looked up but not booked? On another note, I survived a family gathering yesterday. People I hadn't seen for decades. The older generation growing thin, the middle generation growing (sometimes impressively) rotund. Young people sprouting up whose existence I hadn't been aware of.

Regarding the place where you live: for some reason the location service used by Google (and also Bing) is convinced that my IP address indicates that I live in Burton upon Trent, and there is no way to tell it otherwise. There is a way of setting your location but it sets it to a more accurate version of where they think you already are so that still leaves me in Burton upon Trent. Google News allows you to set the place you're interested in for local news and I've set that, but it arbitrarily switches back to giving me news about Burton upon Trent.
How was my day? Spent in Burton upon Trent, as far as the Internet is concerned.

What about the train emails? "Did you enjoy your trip to London Victoria?" Well, you know, we got there, that was something..

Man, but it was rough on the tubes last night. And that was early, at theatre chuck-out time! If the woman who stared us down in the lift at Covent Garden is reading this I just want to say you were really really scary. We were just chatting and having a nice time. Sod off!

Yep, Facebook thinks I live in Oakington, Cambs so I get all their local weather and news. I'm quite happy about that, feels like a small victory that they don't know as much about me as they think they do! (which is very little actually as I don't use my real name or list any personal details!!) It'll be sunshine and showers today btw.... p.s. Is there any reason why I can't preview posts? Just tried and nothing happens. Or is it just me?

And the Reply gives you either the "Preview" mode (what you see is what you get) or writing posts in code. So by default, you are writing in a preview mode.

Yesterday was glued to the TV watching the Tour de France. All hail Chris Froome Unfortunately I had to get the train down to London before the top GC contenders started so was glued to the BBC's text commentary. Today I'll be leaving the country as the race starts so won't be able to see his triumph. Annoying. Off on a 12 day Baltic cruise this afternoon, if the coach makes it to Tilbury before the ship leaves! Left Victoria at 11.30 & as of 1.20 we've just gone through the Dartford tunnel, thanks to road closures due to a triathalon blocking the usual route. I didn't know so many south London suburbs existed!

I went to the Cotswold Wildlife Park today and got pecked to buggery by an escaped crowned crane. It was fun when it was attacking my shoes, but then it started going for my face and I had to fend it off with a Coke bottle.

And I thought train travel was dicey when it came to having to arrive by a certain time. Have a good trip and let us know what you're up to.

Have been slowly descending ever deeper into a work hell in recent weeks - not said anything because I'm pretty much beyond words - and today things got significantly worse. So please cover your ears while I...
AAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH!
...OK, as you were.

Oh I have been there (am frequently there) with scream-inducing work related. Much sympathies.
Meanwhile today I refrained from actual violence towards a colleague who went on a 5 minute rant about how teachers have it 'easy' with their '6 weeks off and all the other holidays' and that they 'only work until 3'
I cannot claim to do it now, or indeed for a few years, but tell that to my friends who are in school at 7am, and marking at 2am. Yes the 6 weeks off are a 'perk' but a well earned one (and I'd wager 4 at most are actually 'off' for 90% of teachers) Anyway....argh!

Have just discovered and watched the whole of Victoria. OMG! Why did no one tell me that Rufus Sewell, David Oakes and Tom Hughes could be found all in one place, all together in breeches? ? How did I miss this? And Ben Kingsley has a son who acts very well. They are currently filming series 2. Happy.

Quick update on the psycho neighbour my Mums having problems with. The police have been round to get details and given her a crime reference number. The immediate neighbour who is also having problems has recently had the front of her property painted. She woke on Saturday to discover that 'someone ' had thrown something corrosive up the wall ruining the new paintwork
