Thanks for the Travelodge Wembley High Road tip - booked at lunchtime yesterday for last night for £44. Transport back from central last night and in to my office this morning infinitely preferable to schlepping all the way to Warwickshire and back!

I find the issue with Travelodge Covent Garden is they won't mind your bags if you arrive early, or after you check out. They also charge for wifi, which is patchy in areas further away from the bar.
I nearly always stay at an LSE Vacations property, although you are limited to student vacation times. Passfield Hall on Tavistock Square is around 45 quid a night including breakfast & wifi - only a small room with shared bathroom but good for the price. And easy walk to Covent Garden or bus stops at the end of the square. Euston Station is just around the corner. Grosvenor House in Drury Lane is a bit posher for around 80 quid a night for a single studio with ensuite and kitchenette, but no breakfast. It's about 2 minutes walk from Covent Garden tube.

I usually stay at the Tune Hotel, Kings Cross. Tiny, budget rooms with no windows, but OK if you literally just want a place to sleep. And 5 mins walk to the station for my train home the next morning.

I have just stayed there (again) and they do offer luggage storage now. It's free, though the notice (which was put up in the elevator) said they'd appreciate donations to some charity. While I usually don't need luggage storage, it was something that annoyed me a great deal, too, so I'm glad they are finally offering that. Not sure about the other Travelodges, maybe someone else has information. I treat the wifi charge of 3 pounds per 24 hours as I'd treat low cost airline surcharges: Most hotels simply include the fee for wifi in the room price, whereas Travelodge gives you the option to "opt out" if you don't need wifi or simply add it, like you may add a checked bag for your low cost flight.

My Travelodge (Waterloo) asked at check out if I wanted to leave luggage so presumably it must be something some if not all are going now?
Likewise I don't mind the wifi charge- it's pretty low compared to other hotels, and if I was travelling longer/using my computer/ipad I'd think it was worth it- for an overnight in London data on my phone is fine, but for international travellers £3 in the scheme of it isn't that bad!

Oo thanks for the update on luggage storage. I really resent paying the fees charged in railway stations. but Premier Inn (who offer luggage storage) seem to be getting more and more expensive. I'm trying Wembley High Road and Finchley Travelodges over the next few months, so we'll see! I have always tended to stay in Croydon but am more nervous these days of being reliant on mainline trains..

I stayed at Travelodge Waterloo and King's Cross recently and both were happy to store my luggage at no charge.

I'm trying to plan a five night trip to London from lpool for next year - hopefully in February. Does anyone have any hotel recommendations that are obviously close to the West End, within walking distance, and not too far from Euston station? Everywhere seems so expensive, but the cheapest I've found so far is just under 300 for five nights.

In fact, for 5 nights anywhere that isn't that expensive! Some of the suggestions in here might help: www.theatreboard.co.uk/thread/5305/accomodation-theatre-mini-breaks

We always stay in the Hub by Premier Inn hotels. Can highly recommend the one in Covent Garden especially if you want to be close to everything. The Westminster Abbey one is also very good if you don't mind walking. We always book the "bigger" room though especially if we're staying for more than one night.

Another vote for Hub by Premier Inn.
We’re in St Martin’s Lane from Thursday for three nights to celebrate my 50th birthday 🥳

My spouse likes the Z Hotel Picadilly. I think it's less than 300/night plus you can join their "club" and get 10% off right away. Great location - wine and cheese most evenings - rooms are definitely small but not uncomfortable.

The free wine and cheese each evening is a big draw too 🍷 🧀

Premier Inn hubs in the west end or nearby are not going to cost in at £300 for 5 nights. That one on St Martins Lane is about £150 a night and that’s for a room you couldn’t swing a pussy in and a fake window. Hub also have underground rooms which completey freak me out. The ones in Westminster are better value than Covent Garden but 5 nights for £300 near to the WE is going to be a squeeze.
I think to find that sort of rate you’ll have to be looking at pubs with rooms, or AirBnB a tube ride away from the WE. Earlier in this thread the Travelodge in Wembley got good feedback.

If you’re willing to travel for a bit longer the following Travelodges in London can be cheap and are fully functional, clean and safe. Obviously there are more but those are the main three that I have used or considered.
Ealing (near Ealing Broadway tube station) Crystal Palace (near Kent House train station) Tower Bridge (near Monument/Bank complex)

When I was down the other week I stayed at The Bedford in Russel Sq. This is an independent chain, they have ( I think) 5 hotels in the same vicinity. One of them, which is (I think) The County is very affordable for London if you don’t mind shared bathrooms. I DO mind shared bathrooms so got a single at the Bedford for £100 a night. It was spotlessly clean, everything worked fine, Internet is free, breakfast is included in the rate. They’re going for the “basic no frills but ok” concept that premier inn have mastered. The shining star of the hotel though is a very nice lounge/bar/ restaurant overlooking a beautiful secret garden in the heart of Bloomsbury. I can’t vouch for the breakfast as I didn’t have it (tripadvisor reviews aren’t that great) but it’s a lovely place to chill out. This chain was used by the now defunct Superbreak in their theatre break weekends, its Imperial Hotels and they have an app. Please read tripadvisor reviews before taking this as a recommendation.

That's why I was astonished the poster thought £300 for 5 nights was expensive! I'd like to know what hotel they found. If that is their budget rather than the best they found, then no chance in Central London really except a hostel.

I recently stayed with Studios-2-Let in Cartwright Gardens, about 5 minute walk to Euston, Kings Cross or Russell Square stations. Bus stops a few minutes away to take you to West End or an easy 15-20 min walk. Budget studios are *very* small but convenient and you do get a kitchenette. Looking online they do have some discounts for February which would fit the OP's budget.

Everywhere seems so expensive, but the cheapest I've found so far is just under 300 for five nights. As others have said, for something central you are probably looking at £300 for the 5 nights as a minimum (ie average £60 a night). Looking at the Premier Inn, Travelodge and Accorhotels sites for a random 5 days in Feb there are a few options for around £300 or just under if you book a non-flexible rate. Alternatively you could save money by going further out. For instance for the same 5 days the Premier Inn Hammersmith is £230 for the 5 nights. This is about 30 minutes by tube from the West End.

The PremierInn in Chiswick always comes up as very affordable but I don’t know how well connected it is. I think the Tube is a bit far away and I have no idea about the buses into the WE because I couldn’t get google maps to offer any suggestions. That was about £60 a night though for the usual PremierInn standard.

Premier Inn Lewisham is one of the cheaper ones I think, and it's 5 minutes from Lewisham station with direct trains to Charing Cross and Waterloo.

Travelodge in Park Royal was affordable, well served by the tube and easy to drive to in the first place. I used to get a discount in Premier Inn but changed jobs so that (small) perk went away. You can normally wangle 5-10% off a Travelodge through various codes too.

This year for me its Cricklewood - £140 for four nights in the Travelodge.
Wembley and Excel have been cheap for me in the past and Greenwich as well. Also stayed in some grotty independents in Tuffnell Park and Paddington that I'd avoid and there was that one time at Earls Court where the desk clerk chased me down the road as I'd left without paying!
If you are prepared to travel for 30 to 45 minutes of an evening and morning then its far cheaper to stay outside central London, I also think the LU is one of the best transport systems in the world (if avoided at peak morning and evening) so generally have no issues with travelling.

If you are a hostels person, then Safestay is probably one of the better ones. I’ve only stayed at Elephant & Castle and it was perfectly clean and safe. It felt a bit like a Premier Inn but with bunkbeds. About halfway between E&C and Kennington stations, and there are plenty of buses so it is well connected.

Always Google Travelodge discount codes. It's amazing how easy it is to get a free 10% off code.
