Exactly. I keep hoping that the people who don't get it the first time will have the penny drop later, because I feel like they've only seen half the show. It's like they're *this close* to getting it....

..when it was playing in London, that is. Yes, I said in the London thread I saw people came bouncing back into their seats after the interval and then straight into Playing Nancy, which kinda guilted the audience out for having such a good time at Nancy's expense. A beautiful number, just felt in the wrong place.

I got the idea behind the song and I liked that they were trying to give the side characters more depth. But the song as an act two opener just felt out of place to me, almost like a complete stand alone. It's probably down to me not paying enough attention to the character in act one but I had no emotional connection to Nancy at the start of act two. Which is why her solo did nothing for me in the context of the story (despite it being a lovely song). I'm planning to watch the show again on Broadway in June and I'm hoping the song will work better for me on repeat viewing.

It's probably down to me not paying enough attention to the character in act one but I had no emotional connection to Nancy at the start of act two. I think that's sort of the point - that we have no emotional connection to her going into the song. Every time I saw it people were laughing at the first couple of lines of the song, because she's kind of a joke figure, and then it gradually moves from being funny into being sincere and truthful and tragic, and hopefully by the end of the song you've connected with her. And then she disappears and becomes part of the background again - which is what the song is about. Only now (hopefully) you're looking out for her in scenes. It's the sort of thing you can do in theatre and not in film, because in film the camera is always directing your gaze whereas a theatre audience can decide where to look.

I think they're trying to establish a theme with "Being Nancy", more or less tying into the "seeing you for the first time", as the finale goes. Though we're more or less familiar with Nancy at this point in Act I, this moment in Act II really makes the audience check themselves, and to reevaluate our own prejudices and assumptions. The reason why people feel a bit off about it is because it makes us reconsider our own judgement on Nancy that we've formed in the earlier act.

I really loved that song too, but when applauding I did turn to my friend say "huh?". It felt like a really random Act II opener. I kinda wish they had it somewhere more in context. But that being said, it was beautifully sung and is a beautiful song!

I get why it seems random at the time - that's why I think it might click for people later on. Hopefully with a cast recording to listen to people will get that chance.

It amazes me that every musical theatre performer in New York isn't already belting out "Playing Nancy" on Youtube. I'd have put money on that being a stand-out hit number. TBH they're by far more original there. There are nightly gigs at 54 Below that are so full of original material, trunk songs, or anything from back catalogs. Versus London performers who are still performing "On My Own" and "The Wizard And I" at every. single. concert.

Is Rita in a darker coloured coat? Everything else looks basically the same to me except Phil's scarf. I'd be inclined to agree with Monkey and put it down to the overall darkness of the photos.

Looked online to see some photos of when it was here to compare them and Rita's coat and hoodie colours seem to have been swapped, here she had a blue coat and purple/redish hoodie and on Broadway it's the other way round (also possibly different colour jeans, definitely different shoes, but that's all going a bit far isn't it and being stupidly picky). Phil's definitely a different scarf though!
To me the photos just seem darker, which yes, could either the lighting or the photographs, but the costumes in general seem about the same as over here. Still got the pink and blue blizzard people, the man in the red,...

Random question for anyone who's been to see it in NYC... What merchandise do they have? My dad in going to be in NYC next week and is willing to pop to the theatre to buy some stuff for me if they'll let him, I just have no idea what they have. Seeing as how we had no London run merch I'd love anything they are selling! I'm guessing they'll have an online store at some point but there isn't one yet.
Thanks for any help!

Maybe it will s just me but the new photons do not seem to look as nice or professional as the old vic. Maybe it is just me being picky. Let's hope it wins a few olivier or even Tony's and we get it back in the west end.

You're being picky. They're not darker. Exactly the same with different people.

Aww, those cuddly groundhogs are so cute! I'm not usually one for show merchandise but if I manage to make it to NY while Groundhog Day is on I might end up buying one.

I want one of those groundhogs!
Also I was in a café in Islington yesterday that had a 'Greetings from Puxa on Groundhog Day' poster on the wall, which pleased me greatly!

charliec at this rate your dad could make money out of selling them to us all! Best though would be if the show was going to be back over here again soon so we can go and see it again and buy our own cuddly toy groundhogs!

OMCute. I didn't even really like the musical that much but I want one of those groundhogs.
And I want Andy Karl to deliver it. In just a bow.

Just feel so happy I saw this show when I did, a month into the run at The Old Vic, with the major discount just before opening and it selling out! Such a brilliant show. Here's hoping it will transfer over again, I can't even begin to imagine who they would cast in Andy's role though, as I doubt he will come back.

Honestly I applaud this. And that mental image will frankly get me through the morning (and the evening)

The background harmonies are quite different. They've changed the phrasing on quite a few lines, particularly my favourite bit near the end of the song where Phil is singing about starting 700 fights and Rita quietly and slowly sings "if I had my time again" over the top, the Rita line has been sped up and I can't really see why. This was my favourite song from the show last year and I still really like it, but it's got that "Broadway sheen" now and just doesn't feel quite as magical! I think most of the words are the same, the ending lines about doors are new, they've slightly changed a few other bits like when Phil is talking about eating a dozen doughnuts everyday, I'm sure the wording was clearer before.

It's a lot more polished and there are some tiny differences, but it's largely the same. I'll take it, anyway!

Just listened and now I absolutely cannot wait for the full album to be released!!! Yep, it does sound particularly polished, but it still sounded great to me. Evoked flashbacks of last summer when I saw it in London. The excitement is almost too much (plus I need a new album to obsess over - Dear Evan Hansen has been everything to me for the last few weeks!)

Carlyss was more of a speak-singer - which worked for Minchin's wordy lyrics. Always knew they'd get a 'prettier' (that's prob the wrong word, I'm thinking of vocal tone, not appearance) vocalist for Broadway, though.
