@cleoskryker ‘illusion of intimacy’ is such a great way to put it - I may have to steal that phrase. It explains so well why people get upset when celebs stop using social media (whch many do, once they reach a certain level of fame) - it shatters the illusion.

I don’t think anyone’s said anything to disagree with that. Just putting my opinion forward, adding my voice. Isn’t that what this forum is for?

To be honest I didn’t even know CHF was famous apart from her theatre roles.
In terms of stage door, to be honest I think a lot of performers love meeting fans afterwards

To be honest I didn’t even know CHF was famous to be honest apart from her theatre roles. There's a fantastic podcast called ReplyAll that's "about the internet," and their most recent episode has to do with YouTube celebs. It's a fascinating look, especially if you're unfamiliar with the culture: www.gimletmedia.com/reply-all/125-all-my-pets#episode-player

In all honesty, most of Carrie's fans are fine. There are small groups within that just complain when she doesn't do the "meet and greet" that their ticket "entitles them to".

I think I have nearly listened to them all. It was a very interesting show that one.

This episode (I think it's called 'All My Pets') was particularly good - like a beautiful short story - with a window to a whole new world. It traces the meteoric rise of a Youtuber and the demands on her to meet and interact with her public.

I saw Carrie at the SD of Les Mis (I was waiting for someone else). There were precisely two people waiting for her, so it wasn't chaos every day.

I once stage doored too when she was on Les Mis, but everyone (myself included) was fangirling for Rob Houchen, not her.

I only went to Les Mis a few times while Carrie was in it. And the only time there was quite a few people was when she was leaving.

Not really a drama, but one of the cringiest was Michael Ball at Sweeney todd at the Adelphi. A somewhat forgotten former West End leading lady was there as his guest, and as the small crowd gathered around, Michael loudly announced who this lady was and her credits, in an effort to get the fans to show her some attention.
Sadly, all those present either didn’t know or care about who she was, leaving her standing awkwardly to the side as Michael signed autographs.
Ouch. I bet she’d rather he hadn’t said anything.

When Ms Stubbs is working at a theatre in the provinces, the world-famous Crucible Theatre for example, she loves a big shop in the M & S food hall, followed by a taxi back to her digs.

I bet she makes a little picnic for herself, a six pack of pork and pickle fancies, some cheesy coleslaw, a big bag of bbq beef crisps and a cheeky Pinot to sluice it all down.

Seriously, I was late to learning about Una Stubbs, I didn't see Wurzel Gummidge (sp? WTF?) or 'Til Death Us..' but now I've seen her in a number of things and I am in awe. She is ALWAYS good. Weird revival of 'Family Reunion' at the Donmar - Fab! Lovely warm character in 'Curious Incident' - nails it! Mrs Hudson in Sherlock - Ace! (her line reading in the wedding episode when Sherlock is giving that interminable speech about who will be the next murder victim: 'I think you're on the top of a lot of people's list right now, Sherlock.')

But...desperately pulling this back to Stage Door Dramas....I don't really do stage doors, but if I ran into Una in M&S I would be very tempted to say 'hi.'

I have always loved Una Stubbs. When I was a kid I thought of her as being like your favourite teacher at school. And she never seems to age. Her background as a dancer has stood her in good stead.

She cracked me on the ankle once with her suitcase jumping onto the tube at the last minute. I was just about to give her evils when I realised who it was and just stood there starstruck for the journey. It was in the heyday of Give Us A Clue.

The tremendous Catherine Tate. We’d been to see her fantastic live show at De Montfort Hall in Leicester and were buying some merch afterwards (a v funny tea towel, of all things). The man at the counter told us that Miss T would be signing any merch at the stage door, so we made our way around. There was quite a crowd (and it was a bitterly cold night), but Catherine cheerfully signed everything anyone had. She took dozens of selfies with people on their phones.
We were the very last in the queue. She took the time to ask us how we’d enjoyed the show, sign our tea towel, and take a number of selfies. We told her we’d seen her being equally brilliant in Much Ado About Nothing, and she talked about that for a while, until her minder dragged her back into the warm.
Great show. Lovely lady.

I reserve stage door for a handful of people as I'm not that comfortable with it but I will stage door for any of the actors from the tv show Dallas - one of very few tv shows I love. Having read a fair bit about 'diva' re Priscilla Presley I was a tad nervous but she couldn't have been lovelier, or quicker. She was straight there having just changed her clothes, left the make up on and gone round saying she didn't want people waiting in the cold. Happily signed, posed for pics and chatted, answered questions about Elvis and even asked one lady to send her a copy of the photo she had of Elvis with Priscilla as she's never seen it before.
Just goes to show don't believe what others say about someone, make your own mind up if you meet them!

There have been shows where normally lovely actors are having a bad day, scowl when you call the half, etc. You learn not to take it personally - people are people and have good or bad days. I’m glad you had a great experience on this occasion.

Didn't realise Aiden Turner or Poldark was such an old ladies magnet. (Never seen the show.) Was shoved out the way by a pack of rabid 40-60 year olds (with their husbands in tow to film the special encounter), most of whom refused to budge once they got their little wish. And they call us young ones crazy...
I turned up to thank the cast, but most of them just slunk away - I didn't want to impose in case they had other engagements or wanted to go home, or if they're all too accustomed to the Aiden Turner fanfest at the stage door.
