Just booked a ticket for Munich. Didn't even know they were visiting ze best country in ze world, so thanks Theatreboard I know, I'm not exactly Emma's biggest fan, but, as I haven't seen Evita yet, I can at least tick it off my list. She is miles better in this than her attempt at Wicked, I think you will enjoy it at least. My personal problem was just the show itself, I spent a fair bit of it confused, there is alot that goes on, which naturally happens with a musical covering a whole persons life. But Emma really turns it out, it must be said. As it happens I'm reading Patti L's memoir at the moment and in the chapters about Evita she basically says that this is the reason why it was "dismissed" by NY press. She says that in order to engage with the show you have to already know something about the story of Eva, or at least read the programme notes "and who does that?". She says that her and old Mandy P had to basically drag the audience with them through the story. No comment on how Elaine dealt with things in London other than that she told people to "shut up" every time in rehearsals some said "Elaine did it like thi...."

I wonder if it is more that audiences in 2017 don't make the intellectual efforts they did back in 1978? The story was always totally clear to me, both in the original and revival productions. It's just a case of listening and concentrating - the lyric is pretty much self-explanatory, I feel. Same here, except that I didn't see the original production as it was before my time. In fact I don't recall having a problem knowing what was going on just from listening to the cast album, which I did years before I ever saw the show. (Unlike Les Mis, which I couldn't make head or tail of from the cast recording.)

I was trying to understnd what was going on, and for the most part I did, but it did spoil some of the enjoymenrt for me, having to focus as much as I did. I felt moments were lost for me because of that but after watching, I read a proper synopsis and that filled in the blanks and thats fine now. I dom't feel the need to go back to Evita ever again though unless casting drew me.

She says that in order to engage with the show you have to already know something about the story of Eva, or at least read the programme notes "and who does that?". When I saw the Adelphi production in 2006 it was my first encounter with the show apart from Julie Covington's "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" and I didn't have any trouble understanding it.

I mean, I know it's a very clever foil to narrate the story but one could be forgiven for thinking "what's Che Guevara got to do with it."

Che is meant to be an Everyman. Literally "buddy" or "friend". The concept was he would be whichever was needed in that scene. I.e a waiter in the Junin scenes, or a reporter during Peron's Latest Flame for example. It was Hal Prince who created the Che Guevara concept, not the writers. So the Grandage production uses Che meaning "just a guy", and the Kenwright/many other productions ldress him up as Che Guevara. That is literally the only difference - a change of costume. It shouldn't make any difference to one's understanding of the narrative.

I don't think Hal Prince created the idea of Che being specifically Che Guevara. On the original White concept album there is a subplot where Che is developing an insecticide. This is something that the young Che Guevara did, amongst several outlandish entrepreneurial schemes that failed.
The song cut from the stage show 'The lady's got potential' (different lyrics when later restored for the film) had Che sing: "My insecticide's going to be a best seller.... I'm shaping up successful capitalist wise".
And when Eva finally dismisses Che with "whip up your hate in some tottering state" it sounds exactly like what Guevara did next after leaving Argentina. That lyric survives of course.
So, oddly, Prince cut some lines that most clearly refer to Guevara, but visually made it crystal clear. Perhaps more than Rice was advocating as essential.
Che's role as narrator is the main thing of course; and began as Eva's hairdresser in Rice's early conception of who that Narrator would be.

I much prefer to get my phone out at the moment I decide I want to research something and ask siri as loudly as I can This reminds me actually, I was at a show the other week (I forget which one) and just after the announcement said "please switch off your mobile phones", someone's Siri very appropriately said "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that". Impeccable timing.

Poor Patti! So talented and yet Madonna got to play Evita in the movie version, Glenn did Norma on Broadway, no wonder she's bitter with the Hollywood establishment... The woman actually loves dishing on other performers, she said Neil Patrick Harris wasn't quite ready when rehearsals for the NY philharmonic concert of Company started and blamed Sherie Rene Scott for "Women on the verge.." flopping on Broadway

To be honest I think Patti calls other people out because it's part of the caricature of who 'Patti LuPone' is now. I think she's a very gifted woman, but boy does she use the fact she can hit certain notes to look down on others. The movie version of Evita isn't brilliant, but it did well at the box office at a time movie musicals weren't really being made - and I much prefer Madonna's score to Patti's... Yeah honestly reading her bio, is there anyone (other than Sondheim) who she's worked with who hasn't wronged her, didn't know how talented she was/how incompetent they were; etc. When "War Paint" closes/flops, wonder if she'll turn on Christine Ebersole. Was kind of shocked that she actually made it seem like her and Glenn are okay. Then again, if anyone could cut Patti down to size, my money's on Glenn Close. What's sad to me - if she did reconcile with ALW and maybe took over for Glenn in NY for the revival, it would be the theatrical story of the year. "Patti LuPone as Norma in NY". (Although, I doubt she'd ever want to follow Close... Yeah she can out-sing Close, but acting wise, she has only one approach which is very much like her off-stage persona)

I'm slightly worried that Evita isn't going to extend and will close in Germany in July, I hope this isn't the case as I would love for the show to carry on for many more months... If it does close in Germany in July, I'll have to book flights!

I'm seeing the tour tomorrow in Wimbledon, first time ever experiencing Evita, so am rather intrigued. The only song I know is Don't Cry For Me Argentina! Mainly going out of intrigue of Emma haha. And of course, the one, the only, Dame Patti LuPone singing my favourite song from the whole score as only Patti can (check out the hair flick at the beginning). Seriously people. Do not mess with this woman.: Can totally imagine Ivanka Trump this as Donald leers on in the background! EVITA is his favourite musical.

An Idina style approximation of the tune? a bit of control rather than forced arrogance would have made it so much more satisfying.

I think the thing with this musical and me, its not the kind of show I'd go back to see. I enjoyed it a lot when I saw it, I liked the score and Emma was great, but I think the leading lady would be the draw for me rather than the show itself.
